My (Also Un-named) Side Project

HEY,LISTEN

Lately I've been working on a side project from my original hack. It's not just "go through this linear level and touch the goal tape", but more like mission based. Examples would be like (Bring us the bomb Commander Naota left in the cave so that we can attack Bowser!) and such. I guess slightly more puzzle based and less linear? It has a lot of custom stuff so far (ExGFX, sprites, blocks, music, etc.) Now for some screens:

Outside of Frostbite Cavern.

No Mario blocks.

Commander Naota's bomb, which only generates once you hit the switch. Besides, the pipe won't let you through if you don't have it with you =]

Message in Fire Vista.

Collect all 5 of the normal gems, or else the final gem won't generate ;]

More screens later, after more levels are finished.

Current story (which takes place after Dinosaur Land, for now):

Bowser had escaped Dinosaur Land. But to make sure that Mario didn't follow, he set the land ablaze and moved on to a new world. Now Mario, with the aid of Commander Naota, must stop Bowser before he reaches the Star of Kaiten in the heavens, giving him the power to destroy this world and create his own, before it's too late!

Any comments/feedback?

I like the idea of a more mission-based structure, and your screenshots look very nice. So, who exactly is Commander Naota?
HEY,LISTEN

I thought it would be a good difference from linear based levels, and the levels themselves are actually fun to make. I thought since I was using missions, I might as well use a Commander, and Naota is one of my favorite names, so yeah. He's the one that guides and helps Mario through the course of the game.

Neat idea - what kind of critter is that in the screenshot with the No Mario blocks?

penguin from YI i think
Just back here to browse a bit.
Most likely a sprite because there is a penguin custom sprite. -_-
HEY,LISTEN

Uh... yeah. That's an actual bumpty >_>
Wow. Three whole posts of wondering if the penguin's a custom sprite, not the kind of comments/critism I expected >.<

The bumpty sprite's GFX looks good. Did you rip them? Or...
HEY,LISTEN

Actually, yeah. I ripped them out of YI, but I had to do some major recoloring. Not as good as the original, but the colors on it don't seem too bad =/

My hack was mission-based, but it was very crappy. This hack looks alot better.
Pac wins.
I really like the fact that you are using the basic framework of SMW to do something different. It makes for a more interesting experience than, "here, play though these 8 redone worlds."

[?] Miscellaneous Helpful Hints
If I moderated your hack, there was apparently a 90 percent chance it was rejected.
I really sort of like the lite color and low-tech usage of the graphics. The Wario Land enemies also look nice. It is also funny, though, because Bumptys are used a good amount nowadays in SMW hacks.

I also love the story, it seems like we might have a equivalent to one of the newer Megaman X/Zero games(or Tron Bonne). This is also the second hack to use names of military commanders, possibly General Tani from Extreme Elimination Challenge and the Unnamed Sparx Hack(what about Mario Mission Mystery: Mushroomland Security?) commander and have them both throw the final hits at Bowser.

Will the final battle be in heaven though? It is also very nice, especially with Stranded, how the game hacks have become a lot more complicated than the original game. I love mission-based games and hopefully there will be all kinds of missions(Is Yoshi's House going to function as the base of operations?).
I am not a hacker by trade, I am an observer and I can be very observant. I tend to lurk around here to prolong the good experience of playing the original SMW. Whatever can add onto it is something that I will definitely do when I am bored which is often. And I will rarely post and give praise when needed to the hacks that may make me interested to relive memories.

My worst enemy in Mario isn't Bowser but my controller that keeps on getting disconnected from the inside. Might be my memory count.
No, it's not.

Except if you have something actually relevant to say, which wasn't what you did.
