Is there any point to lives?

Think about it. Whenever you get a game over you can just continue where you left off where you also get five new lives. If you got a game over in SMB1 you had to start the game over again. If you got a game over in SMB3 you had to start the world over again. But Super Mario World... nothing.

Any ideas for harsher penalties for getting a game over?
I would say no (as an answer to the thread title). Infact, I always give the player infinite lives. Possibly one could make a patch that makes you restart from the begining of a world. I don't think that would be too hard. Maybe I'll look into it.

IIRC, when you get a game over in Super Mario World, you go back to the last place you saved (Ghost House/Castle).

Sure you only had to replay a few levels or so, but having to replay the whole game again would be quite touch since Super Mario World's levels were more complex than Super Mario Brothers'.

True, but whats stopping the player from just beating the level with the savepoint again if he has one life left?
What's stopping the player from using save states and never losing a single life? People will play however they want.

Hi,
i am new to this forums!!!!
What a way to say it, in the middle of someones thread...

We have an introduction thread you know.

Edit: Here is said thread, and also, welcome to SMWC, get out while you still can enjoy your time here.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Game Over in SMB1: Back to game start unless you pressed a certain button combo.

Game Over in SMBLL (IIRC): Same unless it was the All-Stars version, then it was back to the start of the level.

Game Over in SMB2: Back to World Start, but you had limited continues.

Game Over in SMB3: Back to World Start, but any defeated Bros, and cleared locks/rocks (maybe fortresses as well) stayed gone.

Game Over in SMW: Back to last place you saved from.

As far as playing on emulators go, at the core there is really no point to lives, but many people and SMWC Hack Guidelines would rather encourage designers to create their levels/games with people who would like to play legit in mind (some even go as far to play these games on a SNES/Wii/PSP, but that's another story). So being thrown a bone is nice for those types of players.

In most games it makes you go back to a castle/ghost house.

Also, even if you start from the same level, it does not let you start from the midway point iirc, so that's another thing.

However, I enjoy infinite lives.

I know two non-Mario games with infinite lives...

1. Donkey Kong 64
2. Banjo-Tooie

I think you could enable the save prompt only in castles to make you start at the beginning of the world, more like SMB3. I really don't pay attention to save spots, so i don't know if there are any hacks with the same idea.

Or you could just uncheck the "Save Prompt" box in the levels that do make you save in the OverWorld editor...

Anyways, as mentioned, as far as an actual gameplay mechanic only a select number of people really use lives as opposed to their emulator's savestates and/or rewinds, but I think most of us still get a kick out of finding a super-secret bonus room that was tucked away in a quiet corner of a level that has a 3-up moon or a few 1-ups with assorted powerups (as long as the hack doesn't overuse these types of bonus rooms).

That would be really unfair Fakescaper since your supposed to beat it that way?
What if it was a "Special World"?

That would work.
