General Mario Games Thread

I had no idea you were playing SMG2, S.N.N. I'm envious of everyone's ultra-low death counts.

Come to think of it, this is also the first game I 100%'ed in a while. I used to 100% games as a kid all the time. Nowadays I get bored of games quick.
Yeah, I'm a bit surprised S.N.N. had fun, considering how much he didn't like the original.

Anyway, after beating the game, I can say that I definitely love it. The level design was superb, the powerups and gimmicks were extremely clever, and the difficulty was actually satisfying. Still, I can't decide which of the two Galaxy games I liked better. Sure, SMG2 had slightly better level design and gameplay, but it seemed to lack the epic, magical feel that SMG had, in my opinion. Honestly, the original had such an amazing atmosphere; I can't put my finger on exactly what it was, but it was one of the best experiences I've ever had with a game. Plus, it had a bit of story to add some depth to the game (and that ending had to be one of the most epic ones I've seen in a Mario game). SMG2 felt more like a standard whimsical Mario game with a more comical environment. I also didn't like that the galaxies overall were smaller. Most of the time you'd get a taste of something awesome, then you'd want more, only to find out that it's over and you have to move on to the next galaxy.

Still, like I said, the game made up for all that with amazing gameplay and awesome gimmicks such as the Drill Bit, the Cosmic Clones, the Flip-Swap system, and most of all, Yoshi.

I've got a couple green ones I can't find, so I'll get back to them. My death count will probably be high considering how I die a lot to get starbits...
I've realized this was outdated.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 was definitely an excellent game. The gimmicks (except for Fluzzard in my opinion) were very well implemented and fun to use, and the addition of Yoshi was the best usage of him in a recent platformer (as in, more common than New Super Mario Bros Wii, doesn't dissolve in water like Mario Sunshine).

But I have a possible reason why it might feel more whimsical and light hearted to some, and a bit less epic... because it's got a more primary colour type palette. It's brighter and cheerier like a standard Mario game and less space/grey like in the sense of the original.

The latter is very much more a typical Mario style than the former.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
Up to the green stars now, couldn't find the very first one...
This is gonna take a while.

Also, Fluzzard's not too bad, you just gotta get the life shroom every time you fly with him...

It's on one of the sides of Yoshi's House.
Seriously? I was sure I tried that...

Except for Fluzzard, to get the Comet Medal in the Fleet Glide Galaxy you have to go through the rings, and one of them directly forces you to miss the life shroom.

Do any Piantas board the ship? Or not?`

No, unfortunately they don't, which is surprising, considering all the different types of people that come on the ship.
Then what are the two stumps up top for?

Which ones? The characters that board the ship are a penguin, Luigi, two Gearmos, a bee, a whittle, two or so green Lumas, a jibberjay, Rosalina, a star bunny, a bob-omb buddy, etc. Missing any of those?

I have the star bunny, bob-omb buddy, penguin, both gearmos, whittle, bee and I've run into Luigi but I can't see him anywhere on the ship. I saw Rosalina once but she's not there. So one must be the jibberjay...

Beat the Jungle Fluzzard Race yet? If you haven't, that explains why it hasn't shown up, I think.

Fluzzard as a whole was terrible. Since my motion sensor is getting old and pretty shitty, I had to hold my arm outstretched to it and twist my wrist in ways a normal wrist should not be turned. This made Wild Glide hard, and Fleet Glide and utter nightmare.

It didn't help that I had to search for the second green star on Fleet Glide (which took me multiple attempts to find).

Agreed. The way you had to hold the controller for these levels was plain uncomfortable and just in no way suited for the design of the thing. God I remember Fleet Glide, getting that second gate requires basically turning your arm 90 degrees to the right to get into a certain hallway which is just so damn easy to miss, and then they have the darn nerve to make you have to get the Comet Medal mid flight (rule of thumb; getting small objects at high speeds is pretty much no fun in the slightest).

I kinda disagree. Fluzzard was a pretty fun gimmick, and I didn't seem to have any problem with his controls. Plus, flying through a gigantic crumbling battlestation felt pretty epic to me. :D

However, those green stars were annoying as hell.
I finally got around finishing Paper Mario 2. The Shadow Queen and the Pit of 100 Trials weren't particularly hard, especially Bonetail. Many people say she's difficult, but I found her to be piss easy. I didn't even lose 20 HP. :D

I had 45 HP, 40 FP and 51 BP (lol). Had equipped four Power Plus badges, two for Mario, two for my partners, two Damage Dodges, again one for Mario, one for my partner, one Defend Plus for Mario, one flower saver, the All or Nothing badge and Lucky Day - though that one didn't do jack shit.

Spam Power Lift, use Ultra Jump and Multibonk with Goombella. Dodge the attacks or counter them if you're good at it (I'm not, hence the Defend Plus badges) and additionally heal yourself if needed.

I didn't have to use any items, neither when battling the Shadow Queen nor when fighting Bonetail. They died too quickly. :P

So now what's left is cooking all meals and getting the remaining badges I don't have yet, then I can move on onto Super Paper Mario.
Thanks so speaking about something other than smg2. Well I've never finished paper mario 2, I just stopped playing at the boggly woods.
