General Mario Games Thread

My first 15 attempts at the Perfect Run went... well, badly. Especially the first 12, where I wasn't even able to beat the first area. My last three tries got me to the fourth area, with two deaths from the laser-like waves and one from a bad jump. (Honestly, the second and third areas were pretty easy.)

Let's see how many attempts it will take before I lose my sanity. #w{=|}

I'm probably retired tbh

WHAT THE FUCK NINTENDO?! #w{O.O}
I found that last Galaxy hard enough to do with checkpoints and 3 HP but to do this without getting hit and NO CHECKPOINTS?! I got to the 4th area with the flip platforms but I couldn't get any further than that. The Hammer Bros. bit was annoying as hell but doing that on Perfect Run is gonna be hard.

They should've called this Super Kaizo Galaxy! #w{x(}
Well, finally got the Comet Medal in Grandmaster Galaxy. Tossed out 10 more lives for that.

Yeah, I didn't think there would be any changes to the galaxy on The Perfect Run, but then the Goombas in the first area were replaced with those spiked Flying guys. Of course, no checkpoints is just wonderful as well. I got up to the fourth section, then put it aside. I'll see how many times I keep trying before giving up completely.

Can't believe I got this far, didn't think I would.
When I entered the fourth section, I still had two clouds handy from the last area. If you use those properly, you can bypass a good chunk of the section. The clouds can keep you safe from the lasers, but you'll have to move quick if you are near the statues.

Oh yeah, I knew about that trick. I bypassed some of the section on the clouds, then got hit by a laser.

I look forward to seeing my final death count. I'm sure it'll skyrocket while trying to beat The Perfect Run.
OH MY GOD!! I've done the Perfect Run, I'VE FUCKING DONE IT!! It took me 16 lives to get through that! The 4th & 5th areas are very annoying to get through. I got extremely lucky in the Hammer Bro & Boomerang Bro area. One hammer was so close to hitting me in the face and I managed to get in a spin jump JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME!! As soon as I had beaten the Boomerang Bros I was just shouting "GET IN THE LAUNCH STAR NOW!!" and I'm just so happy that I've finally got the 242nd Star! #w{=D}

BTW, it's actually possible to get THREE clouds to the 4th area. You just gotta make a perfect jump into the Launch Star.

Death count was exactly 200! #w{O.O}

241/242 Stars
Currently I'm trying to collect 9999 star bits for that comet to appear.
Grandmaster Galaxy wasn't too bad, I would say the electric
area was the hardest part.

Bowser's Attack On Yoshi's Island Is Canceled...
I'll be away from the 24th of July for a about a week.

I have no desire at all to do the last galaxy...yet. It's like Nintendo took all the challenge that should have been spread out over the game and lumped it into two nightmarish--albeit interesting--missions. Not fun.

And is there even any reward from getting 242 stars, aside from a sense of accomplishment?

I actually mentioned that quite a while ago. And the jump is pretty easy once you do it once.

If you can manage to get at least one cloud to the Hammer Bros, you're pretty much set for life.

I believe there's a small bonus ending, and you get to see your total death count in the game.
Oh, dear...I don't think I want to see that!

Still, I've the personality that won't let me leave this challenge unfinished, so I'll return to it...eventually. Good luck to everyone else enduring this...level.
Bleh, I give up. There's no way I'm ever beating The Perfect Run. I only got to the fifth section once. Died plenty of other times.

Oh well, back to Sam and Max Season 2.

For some reason, I found shooting Star Bits to actually be a help in the final level. Just spam them to constantly stun the Hammer Bros.

except I recall there being only like 3 star bits in the final galaxy, so how did you spam then? or maybe that was only in the perfect run?
Maybe, you can spin-kill the first few Boomerang Bros. and use the Star Bits they leave.

I'm a little surprised this game didn't have a Bubble challenge, like the last one. Of course, I'm also relieved....

It's quite easy actually. If you were like me and died a few times on the final area, you racked up a few star bits from killing hammer bros. I had about 20 by the time I got to the end for the last time.
Actually, even without going to the Hammer Bros. section, you can eat the flying things in the first section. You need to be used to Yoshi's controls to do that, though. Just eat the first 3, as they are very easy to get. You can rack up at least 10 Star Bits from the first area each time.
159/240 So far. In the begging of world 3. The Fluzzard galaxies were actually pretty easy for me :3.
Well, I guess I'll have to resort to having my cousin join me on 2P for The Perfect Run. I don't care, I just want to beat it.

Overall, it was a great game. I'd rate it on the same level, or slightly higher, than the original SMG. There were definitely some fun and creative ideas in the galaxies, and they were a blast to play. The Green Stars were a great addition as well. My biggest complaint would probably be the challenge level on some missions. Many galaxies had a very reasonable difficulty level: not too easy, not too hard. However, some missions were too frustrating to the point that they just weren't fun. Also, I hate Fluzzard.

Yeah, that's my mini-review.
May as well leave my thoughts now that I'm on the final star and haven't touched the game in a week. Basically I thought the game was great, had many, many, many great ideas the were really well done, and although as a whole (apart from the last two stars) the game was fairly easy for me, but I'm guessing that's because I played the original a lot when it came out.

My main complaints are that I think some of the music tracks are "eh" or just don't fit with the level they're in and I think the worst thing in the game for me was how undeveloped the gimmicks of the game were. I'm not complaining too much that there were many different gimmicks, I just think the ones that were there could have been explored more. For example, I REALLY wanted to have another, completely new slide level, in addition to the one in World 3. I think Nintendo tried too hard to cram the amount of gimmicks from 10 games into one, and whilst that was great that they had so many ideas, for me, it made almost all of these ideas feel undeveloped and not as fully explored as they could have been. Even some of the powerups were used very little (boo powerup only needed to be used once) and could have been explored further.

I did really enjoy this game though, even the green stars, (although the ones in World 1, specifically Fluffy Bluff Galaxy, were pitifully easy compared to the later ones) and I'm glad it stole two weeks of my life.

Not blue.
Cool, I managed to beat SMG2 aswell just a few minutes ago. Though I forgot to check my death counter, I'll have to do so later (although roughly 25 lives can be subtracted due to collecting star bits and dying in Melty Monster Galaxy over and over to quickly raise the counter).

All in all, great game. It has lots of innovations, lots of levels and lots of stars to collect. What I didn't like were the comets. Of course it's a nice idea to pack in the comets we know from the prequel to add some extra challenges, but it felt a bit overdone. Collect purple coins, get the main star while shadow clones are following you, beat the level in time or get through it with only one wedge of life. The same scheme repeated over and over. Granted, there aren't many other things you could do with the comets though...

Some people may argue with me that this isn't bad at all, but from my viewpoint, it felt way too repetitive. The same goes for the green stars. At the beginning I had my fair share of fun with collecting them, but ever since the fourth world, it became boring, dull. And the fact that most of them could already be seen in the level intros... somehow stole the 'explore' feeling.

Though I have to admit that collecting all stars was well worth it for the last galaxy, which was a blast to play through. Believe it or not, but for the comet in The Perfect Run, the first part cost me most lives. At the eighth try, I managed to get the last star. I would have wished for the ability to get rid of cloud Mario, because the last part can get annoying due to the slow physics.

Apart from that, the only other thing that irked me was the camera. The camera should have allowed for more freedom because sometimes, you just have to make a very precise jump, but with a locked camera, you can't time it well enough. So you have to rely on a bit of luck.

My overall rating for the game would be 8/10. It's a good game, but it can't beat the prequel. ;)
