As for the sample bank itself, hm. I take it @7, @12, @13, @14, @15, @16, and @17, or samples 09, 0C, 0D, 10, 11, and 12, are the ones that have been replaced?

For reference, here is what the new samples are (or seem to be):

@7 - piano (rather pizzicato)
@12 - choir
@13 - Not really sure. Some rough, low instrument.
@14 - trumpet
@15 - Strong strings of some kind. (Orchestra? Sounds best at o5 and pretty crappy any lower than o4, in my opinion.)
@16 - Exactly the same as @13.
@17 - Mega Man X guitar.

I put together a little sound-test .txt for testing both sample banks and original SMW instruments. And yes, okay, some of my descriptions leave a bit to be desired, and the only one I actually recognized was the distortion guitar. But it should at least give you an idea.

Oh, and just out of curiosity, why weren't any of the percussion samples replaced? I mean, I'm not a die-hard porter, certainly, but I can use most of SMW's instruments well enough for most songs...however, I have to agree with the majority that the percussion isn't all that great. You can disguise a lot of the other instruments with enough N-SPC, but you can't do that with the percussion.

i cant help you there, but its easy to tell what samples are replaced when you compare that sample bank to the even more compressed optimize bank. do your best imaelia, love to see what you make.
The only percussion in any port I make is either @12 or @23. They sound the best, and they're quiet enough to fit nicely into any port. The other percussion sounds--especially the snare drum--sound kind of...hollow.

That's why my round 3 port doesn't have a lick of percussion.
Camerin Neede:

May I suggest these percussion items?

@21 kick
@10 snare
The Sample bank, revealed!

Sample 9 (@7): Piano from SoM that I have no comments on.
Sample C (@13): Orchestra Hit from Megaman X that may or may not be properly tuned.
Sample D (@14): Trumpet from I completely forget where but probably came from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.
Sample 10 (@12): Celes' Opera voice from FF6 because I hate you all with a fiery passion and want to make you go insane trying to use it.
Sample 11 (@17): The Guitar from the Megaman X series because it's fucking awesome.
Sample 12 (@15): Strings from Terranigma that are so low they make baritone singers cry.
Thanks for the recommendation!

This is an excellent bank. I almost never use samples, but this was a pleasure to work with, and I can't wait to hear what masterpieces people make with this.

When do we start submitting, and is there a new protocol to submitting? Do we still send just our unmarked songs/SPCs to Counterfeit?
I've sent out all the round 2 submissions to the judges. If you didn't get yours in, oh well. I'll be revealing the authors of the ports after I get the judge commentary (unless a judge informs me of another plan) which should be fairly soon since there's only three entries this round.

Also yeah, continue sending me your SMWCI submissions.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Send me your submissions as well please! I'm really bored right now.
sorry, but you gotta wiat for those :3
eiter way, if been learning new porting types like crazy
Waitwaitwait...the deadline is past?! But I thought it was midnight EST! It's only 7:12 PM here...

The round 2 deadline passed midnight Saturday, June 5th. Round 3 only just started, and it ends June 12th.
Yeah, apparently I got my midnights mixed up.

Could one of the judges (besides me) organize the first post a lot better so that the information on the entire contest is more clear/concise?

Also, maybe we should do a news item relating that Round 3 has started and the requirements, since we had fewer competitors this round.

[?] Miscellaneous Helpful Hints
If I moderated your hack, there was apparently a 90 percent chance it was rejected.
well, im not sure about if it could be organized, but yea, a news or at least edit of the thread title would be nice.

edit: wow i bettr start looping mine soon, i coulda had it submitted long before round 3 started if i kept at it.
Yeah, the second round was a little...lacking in participation.

A news broadcast with bold and enlarged lettering would do the trick.
i guess, but the major reason aside from not having time was that i would never try composing from a txt for a contest if i havent done it before and similar with anvil studio except i wouldnt do it for a contest. not if i gotta do it in a deadline. but still, im gonna at least try in the next round that involves composing.
I think there's only one more true-composition round: the Time Round, or whatever it's called; it's the 9/4 song round. 9/4 would be counted as a swift, waltz-y sort of time--three sets of 3/4 in one bar, if I'm not mistaken.

While other priorities may keep me from competing in the fourth round, I will definitely be in for the 9/4 round.
I don't even know if I'm participating in round 3...or 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8, for that matter.

You should. You did quite well in the first round, and there needs to be more competitors--we only had three in round 2!
We would have had four if Atma had given me a break and let me turn mine in late. I honestly thought I had three more hours. I don't have anything in mind for two-thirds of the remaining rounds, I don't know what I'm going to compose in 9/4 time (in fact, I don't have any custom compositions in mind for ANY time signature), I've now missed the other composition round, and I wouldn't call 6th place doing quite well. So, yeah, my spirit for this has been all but killed.

Oh, and as for there not being many competitors, mightn't the people we're up against have some effect on that?

yea but hey, it gives you a chance to see what you can learn to do. like i learned virato use through round 1.
