General Mario Games Thread

Just did my first speed-run comet, in Supermassive Galaxy. Damn, that one really kicked my ass. Lost a bunch of lives there as well. The most common places I messed up were the Giant Koopa drilling section, but I got the hang of that after a couple tries, and the upward/downward shifting platform section. That part isn't too tough when playing normally, but when trying to rush over those platforms, you can fall to your death easily if you're not being careful.
Well, I just beat the main game. It took me 14:27:23 or something, and that was getting 100%. Time for the second half of the game.

List of things I hate:
1) Silver Stars
2) Boo Mario Mechanics
3) Cosmic Clone Levels that involve waiting
4) Bee Mario
5) Water Levels
6) Daredevil Runs of easy bosses
7) Clockwork Ruins Galaxy Physics
8) Insta-kill
9) Whomps
10) Water "killing" Cloud or Bee Mario
11) Hightail Falls Galaxy
12) Fleet Glide Galaxy's Comet Medal
13-Whatever) Other stuff
So, with 72 stars, I'm ready to face Bowser's Galaxy Generator.

Some of the previous galaxies' Comet stars are rather insane. Beat Block Galaxy really comes to mind (seriously, appearing/disappearing blocks every second) even though I only lost two or three lives there. I've also missed Comet Medals in Clockwork Ruins, Slimy Spring, and (oh god...) Fleet Glide Galaxy.

Clockwork) Once you enter the second area, when you come to the end of the first rolling rock section, jump on one to go up to the medal.

Slimy Springs) Sometime near the beginning, there will be a small underwater alcove on the left.

Fleet Glide) Self-explanatory. The second gate is on the left after the blue wall.

Oh, and I had 108 Stars or something. Going to go continue soon.
Just started World 5, and I already have the last galaxy of the world unlocked, after beating just one level in the first galaxy. I wasn't paying attention, but I guess you can skip right to it if you have enough Power Stars.

I've been sporadically doing Prankster Comets. The last one I did was the Shadow Clone mission in Chompworks, which was surprisingly tricky and took me a few tries. I also did the purple coin mission in Sweet Mystery, which was very easy, probably because it wasn't timed.

Right now, I'd rate this game on the same level as the original SMG (which is good). While there are plenty of new ideas in the sequel, there's nothing in particular that makes it a vast improvement over the original. But, doesn't really matter. I enjoyed the first Galaxy very much, so it's good to have more.
@above: Yeah, in the beginning, I would've rated this game high. But then, it got a little more "ordinary", so my rate decreased a little. But then, considering everything, I would really this game a 9...

In other words:

First impression: Awesome
Second impression: Medium
Last impression: Great

@2taco: I know where they are; I was just commenting on how hard they were to get (except in Slimy Spring, where I just plain ignored it).

Anyway, I've had very little time to play today, but I somehow went through Bowser's Galaxy Generator. Bowser himself wasn't terribly hard (maybe it's because I still had my Life Mushroom working), but the section right before him was. I lost at least 5 or 6 lives in there.

I also had time to start World S, so I now have 74 stars.

I just finished Beat Block Galaxy's Comet mission. Good Lord, it was hard. They give you a Yoshi, but don't use him; Mario is better at hopping from block to block on his own.

I'm now stuck at Stone Cyclone Galaxy. You know, I hated this place in the first MG, and I don't care for it much in the second one.

Also, for those who are this far, wasn't Twisting Trial Galaxy an obstacle course from Super Mario Sunshine? It looked very familiar.

Oh yeah, I did that Comet and it was very hard. The beginning part wasn't exceedingly difficult, but the end definitely was.

I'm in World 6 now. I'm able to access the final level, but I'm beating the other galaxies first. This world definitely is a step up in difficulty. That Rock Mario mission in Melty Monster Galaxy took a while for me. The Clockwork Ruins was also pretty tricky, especially getting that Comet medal.

If you follow this thread a little earlier, you can see previews of it before it's full release. Oh, and Dots is doing a LP of it.

Anyways, since it's summer I've been spending more time camping and haven't gotten quite as far as you guys. I'm only in World 5, and I need 4 more stars to get to the boss.
My brother got SMG2 for his birthday yesterday, and we each beat the first world. So far, it's pretty great, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed by a few things. I'm honestly not sure about the validity of these complaints, since I'm so far removed from the "Mario fanbase" now, but I'll go ahead and post my thoughts. (None of the following is meant to be mean or degrading; it's just me writing like I would talk in real life.)

•The story. This is probably my biggest gripe. It's like they grabbed what little story Galaxy 1 had, took out everything that was actually good, and called it a plot. I would be content if it had Galaxy 1's level of story, or at least tied into the previous game somewhere, but after what they had going with that one's story, this is just disheartening and only goes to validate claims like my friend's that this is just a ploy to get more money by re-releasing Galaxy with a few minor changes.

These are just personal complaints; I know a lot of Mario gamers like the way things are kept similar with each game, just with different stage designs, but my taste in games has changed quite a bit in recent years, and I have a different perspective now that I've expanded my field of interests and talk to people who don't play Mario games very often or at all.

•Lack of a spacey feel. Is it just me, or is that one galaxy with the things that flip when you spin the only one where I actually felt like I was in space? Everything else had at least partially some kind of "sky" background going on. This is really epitomized by the opening sequence...it doesn't feel very much like a Star Festival if it's in broad daylight!

•The World structure. I might just be missing something, but why are you forced to get a star in a galaxy before moving to the next? And since apparently the galaxies have only two stars now, it makes it feel less like the open-ended format we had in previous 3D Mario games (which I liked) and more like "Go through the levels in this order and maybe go back to them later to do an extra mission or something".

•Starship Mario. I mean, come on. Compared to the Comet Observatory, this is a joke.

Other than those complaints, however, it's shaping up to a pretty awesome and fun game. I can't really think of anything in particular to praise, however, since, as my brother pointed out, this might as well be a "hack" of the first without any truly major distinctions. A quote from myself a while ago: "They could probably make five Mario Galaxies before I'd even begin to get tired of it." Is it just the lack of story and spacey environments getting to me, or am I being proven wrong? We'll have to see...
@above: I agree that the overworld of the game (not the map, the starship) should be better. I mean, it's so small, and there is nearly nothing to it.
I hated how they totally removed the freeroaming that began with SM64. THAT WAS NICE! And Peach's castle, THAT WAS AWESOME. It was at least mildy present in Sunshine, but sunshine was ruined by the damned blue coins and unclear stars' goal in unlocking new places D:

SMG's levels are all so linear, but I can't say I "complaint" about the story or the "spacey" feel to it. I mean, I was far from expecting any kind of story, so, I wasn't disappointed. Again, Sunshine had that... It was interesting. If they were to take all of the good stuff out of every 3D Mario game and put it together, or at least, IMO, that would make a perfect 10 game. But now, SMG2 is a 9. And SM64 a 9.8 and sunshine a 8 and SMG a 8.5.

Getting quite difficult now...

I'm now at 80 stars after going back for more Comet stars. The Comet star in Sky Station Galaxy was surprisingly hard (mostly due to me doing something hilariously wrong the first 6 tries). However, in Bowser's Lava Lair, even though the Comet star in there had the same gimmick, I made it through there on my first try.

Also, in World S, I started Rolling Coaster Galaxy, and it was frantic. I somehow managed to get one star without dying, but if the other star involves the right path (for experts), hoo boy...

We don't have SMG2 over here until 11 days and i didnt play the first one so is it like a story continue on?

is it worth playing 2 before 1?
and is it worth the full new release retail price?

because i am intersted in a new wii game :)

Beat the game. As with the original SMG, I was disappointed to see that the final boss really didn't differ that much from other Bowser battles in the game. I wish there was some originality to it to make the final fight more exciting and surprising. Plus, that sphere pounding part at the end just seemed really tacked on.

Now playing through the special world. I was expecting some crazy, creative galaxies for this special world, but they seem pretty half-assed. I only did three galaxies in the world so far, as I'm not able to proceed further until collecting 90 Power Stars. Time to do some dreaded Prankster Comets.

As it stands now, I'd rate this the same as the original SMG. More of the same, but that's a good thing for me. Often when a playing video game, I enjoy it quite much and want more of it. Sure, there are a few new things in SMG2, but nothing I feel drastically improves it. Not perfect, but what is?

By the way, I love Lubba's "Chee".
Rolling Coaster was surprisingly, and extremely, easy for some reason. Looking at the preview "video" at the beginning, it looked really hard. But I did both Stars without dieing. I'm kind of worried about the other 2 Stars in the level, though. I won't be getting there for a while, but still.
Am I the only person that feels that Stone Cyclone Galaxy was really disappointing? I mean, not only was it a complete rip off of a Super Mario Galaxy stage (correct me if I'm wrong), but it was just completely hard and very frustrating.
At 90 stars, SMG2 is starting to get frustrating, especially with the Comet stars and Chimp challenges.

Honeyhop Galaxy's Chimp challenge is borderline impossible for me. I've made at least 7 unsuccessful attempts so far. Also, Starshine Beach Galaxy's Comet star is just insane since it's so hard to control Yoshi after he eats a Dash Pepper. I also had trouble with the Megahammer Daredevil run, but that was mostly due to me playing badly.

I actually haven't had as much trouble with World S yet. The Comet star in Mario Squared Galaxy, although insane, took only two tries. I'm not looking forward to Rolling Coaster Galaxy's Comet star, though.
