General Mario Games Thread

On another note, finally unlocked Luigi. Is there some sort of special purpose to using him, other than from what I noticed, he has worse traction than Mario?

Yes, actually. Aside from also being able to jump farther and higher, completing a level with him unlocks developer speedruns for you to race against, sort of like in Mario Kart Wii.

Also, yes, some of the comet missions are absolutely sadistic. As an example, the last level

of World S has you wall jumping on walls that go in and out with a spin like in the Flipswap Galaxy, while dodging spikes, enemies, and cosmic clones.

It's...rather difficult.
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
@above: What? You mean you GOT to the last galaxy? YOU HAVE 240 STARS?!?!?! Damn!

I'm still trying to get the first green star in rock cyclone galaxy, it appears that my "idea" didn't work at all. I wanted to have player 2 freeze the block while I jump on it, but player can't.

Slow the time, hurry to the block by long-jumping through the tricky platforms then backflip and wall jump-spin on top of the cube while it is halfway-turning around and close to the star. THAT'S HARD.

Heh, not even close. I meant the last galaxy within the normal "first" game. I was out sick for a couple days so I had some extra time on my hands, but not quite that much time!

Also, I'm sure you'll be happy to know that the comet mission for that galaxy (if I remember correctly) is a timed one. Have fun...

@above: Well, actually, I've 160 stars right now so meh. I'VE JUST GOTTEN THE DAMN FIRST GREEN STAR FROM STONE CYCLONE.

IT WAS LIKE GROUND POUND LONG JUMP LONG JUMP WALL JUMP SPIN and then I'm ON the cube, but the cube is real far away from the star, so LONG JUMP AND SPIN AND OOO EEEEEEEE YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

On that note, the "normal" last level isn't that hard. It's the freaking coin that is really annoying. Getting the stars in the wall-jump galaxy is rather easy really. But the coin is SO out of reach!

Using Luigi instead of Mario will net you both a star and a 'ghost' in the galaxy you just finished; like the ghosts from Mario Kart games, they are game developer's speedruns, which you can race. I don't think it's a necessary challenge (God, I certainly hope not!); I think it's just one more thing to do in this huge game.

Also, Luigi is better in jumping and platform galaxies.

Edit: Jacob's question was already answered, so shoot. Well, this is here to clear up Luigi's status. And thank God he isn't tacked on to the end of the game.
I was pretty depressed to realize that I was on the final world of Super Mario Galaxy II already. (World 6 is the final world, right?)
@above: There's a world that appears when you finish the game, and a level that appears when you get 240 stars. The 7th world is hard, but the last level is SAID to be the hardest level in Mairo history (hacks put aside, I suppose)

About green stars, I must say I'm surprised how some of them prove to be hard. In fact, they may be both the hardest and easiest stars I've encountered throughout the game so far! The developers are really annoying with their 'keep your cloud power up' thing.

Sounds like I sure have a lot to look forward to...

Anyway, I've finished World 4 now with 41 stars. I really liked Chompworks Galaxy; the method of getting the Gold Chomp into the hole was neat. However, Bowser's Gravity Gauntlet was fairly crazy, what with all those gravity tricks and all...

For those who like wonderful surprises in their games, get ready for Throwback Galaxy!

And to those who've made it to the sixth world, the second star for Melty Monster Galaxy is a proverbial Star Bit heaven, with an easy 1-Up and the potential of 70-80 bits per run.
Why is it that EVERYONE has more free time than me?! I'm trying to figure out how to get the Goomba to that robot cleaning lady in Boulder Bowl Galaxy(Secret star)......I need help with that. WAIT! I forgot I got the premire edition book of SMG2! That'll help!!
Also, everyone here has school and homework, right? So how did they finish those 2 things SOOO quickly and get to the final galaxy?? I NEED ANSWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not everyone has school and homework, actually. My University courses finished in April, and, aside from an online class, I have plenty of free time. Other people rocket through their games in three days, regardless of school and other responsibilities.

...And if you think getting a Goomba to the cleaning machine is bad, wait until you have to knock-spin a red Topman between electric bars and Bob'Ombs, just to get him to another cleaning Gearmo. Not fun.

Aw, come on. You don't need help. I didn't, at least. And I have 190 stars! It's more of a principle than an advice though. 'Cause then I can actually brag (or not) that I have totally beaten the game WITHOUT walkthroughs.

This game is getting fairly crazy now.

I'm near the end of World 5 with 55 stars, but not after some really hairy action. The rolling death barrels (?) in Slipsand Galaxy were particularly insane the first two tries, but I managed to get the hang of it on the third try. Also, I enjoyed fighting Shiverburn Galaxy's boss.

However, these Comet stars are crazy. Boulder Bowl Galaxy's Comet star took four tries since it was so difficult to take out the last crab in time. But, getting the Purple Coins in Flip-Swap Galaxy actually wasn't too bad. The only two deaths I racked up were out of sheer bad gameplay on my end.

OMG YEEEEESSS!! I've got 242 stars!!!!!

That final star is really insane. 6 challenges, all at once, without losing a single life.

I'm surprisised I did it in about 10 tries, though O_o

When I reached the boomerang Bros, I really thought I wasn't going to make it, especially because I had an extra hammer bros firing at me... Four freaking things being thrown at me all at once and I didn't get hit! I was like OMG YEEEEESSS!!

From what I've seen of this game thus far, it doesn't seem to be as hard as the first one. True, the slide level made me cry, and fighting the fiery Gobblegut in Battle Belt was not easy, but I haven't seen a galaxy as challenging as Sling Pod or Bubble Blast from the first game. I'm a veteran gamer, but I can die just as many times as anyone else.

Can those of you who've beaten the entire game reassure me that I will want to break my Wiimote at least once?
Well, I'm now about midway through World 6, and things are really revving up. Melty Monster Galaxy is just plain crazy, but Flash Black Galaxy is the absolute worst. You only get to see where you're going for a few seconds before the ground goes black again for a few seconds, and repeat. I somehow managed to get through once without dying, but the Comet star in there will probably be utter hell... #w{:<}

So, yeah, don't worry about things getting too easy.

I hated Flash Black Galaxy. It reminded me of the DKC level Blackout Basement, which I also hated. If that level has a Purple Comet, then my need for challenge might yet be sated.

Also, do any of you remember the Hell that was the Goron rolling dungeon from the end of Zelda: Majora's Mask? Yeah, the second star of Melty Monster Galaxy reminded me of that, too. So many painful memories....
Got it yesterday, and have played for quite a while. I just finished World 4, with 60-some Stars.

The game is a big improvement off the original, IMO. Yoshi's mechanics are amazing. Silver Stars are still annoying.
In the middle of World 4 now. The Megahammer boss in World 3 was awesome. It's great to see Yoshi is actually necessary in this game, instead of an after thought like in NSMB Wii.

I also did the purple coin challenge in the slide level of Tall Trunk. By some miracle, I actually beat it on my second try. Thank God you don't have to collect all the purple coins.

Well, possibly. I can quote you the 3 hardest stars in the whole game.

3: The purple coins in world 7's retro Mario galaxy (similar to SMG's purple coins in Luigi retro, but harder in many ways)
2: Stone cyclone's first green star. I died like 50 times on that one.
1: The perfect run, the 242nd star in the game. I died about 10 times but I got extremely lucky to do it so fast O_o Seriously, you have to do 6 stages. 3 of them are quite hard to do without a scratch. AND you have only one life! Though, considering I have died 50 times in the second one, the perfect run might be second, actually.

In all honesty, if you have any levels to be HARD aside of those three, hell, you're in for ownage.

And yes, those three stars are harder than any stars in the original game.
