ok, i have a question that is probably stupid, but im just being very lazy, and want to use some puzzles i have already made for my creativity entry instead of making new ones. so, does kaizo mean the level has to be trying to kill you, or can it be an insanely hard puzzle like spw3 1-1 where you had pretty much nothing trying to kill you.

yes, im making a puzzle level, because they are just sooooo much fun! xD

The "Difficult" category's objective is to create the hardest level that you can, as in the level is out to kill you. If the level is lacking in difficulty, then yes, you won't be getting as many points. It's not exactly strict nor lenient, as it's quite a subjective category.

As for MAP16, yes, that can be used for some nifty creativity, as long as it's executed well, and not abused so that it's "haha, the ground kills you here for no reason, oh and there's munchers that you can swim in".

That is what the "Difficult" level is for, a level which is out to kill you. Clearly, such a difficult puzzle as mentioned would be best suited for the "Creative" category.

Since Ulti said it's better for creativity, you could make a puzzle level by taking all of the current puzzles in your hack and putting them into one level, and enter both categories.

Two more questions, YAY! (Not -_-')

After hearing it has to be uber hard for it to be in the difficult section, I had to go for creative. However, most of my hack is complete for the most part and being uber hard is not an exception as this is meant to be played by a human player. (a masochistic one at that) Can 'Creative' count as making unique jumps of just the general use of something to do another thing it was not meant to do. (Flying Blocks used as a platform for instance)

Or does creativity come from the look and feel of a level, using custom music that suits the mood of the palette with custom sprites and custom everything. I am just voicing my concern over the fact my computer hates any form of custom blocks and sprites, so I plan on making it a Vanilla Kaizo hack (besides custom music)

Can you please clarify?


I think the creative category is for original ideas, things that aren't just like, "You've got to jump over the spikes to grab the mushroom, then you've got to duck jump back and do the turn block elevator thing, then you've got to do some mushroom running over a line of munchers, then etc.". I assume the creative category is for levels that are different, kind of like Bowser's Ruins.

Let me rewrite that.

Are you scoring the creativity based on the creativity in music selection, block selection, et cetera? Or are you judging based of the use of the items and the variety of puzzles?

And is length a factor?

EDIT: Right now I am in a tough part. The deadline is approaching and I have the level 1/2 way done, but right now under my level, I see it neither falling under creative (Basic Map16 tricks and creative jumps, only a few cool things here and there), nor difficult (meant to be played w/o slowdown, but with a lot of save states). I'm at ends. -_-'

EDIT 2.0: LAST question, by 'two exits only' do you mean only two 'levels codes' it is on (105, 103 for instance), or do you mean, two exits for the level, (i.e: Regular path, secret path, switch room, et cetera)


I can answer your questions, I think (correct me if I'm wrong, Ulti):

1. Creativity most likely does not require those, but they will allow for more original ideas. The Creativity category is for using what you have in interesting and original ways. Like for the Vanilla Level Design contest, the winner used a Rip Van Fish to make it look like a Chuck was sleeping.

2. By "two exits", he's talking about the actual end of the level. I believe this was to prevent people sticking four switches into the level, so that the player had to go through the level 5 times to actually get to the end.

Also, for your level, it would most likely fall under Difficulty. Levels in the Difficulty category do not have to require slowdown (and probably shouldn't, because that usually makes the level less fun).
