Paper Mario - Legend of the Shines (Tricked ya ;D )

Hi!

I've dropped Mario - Shadows Reborn (Yes thats ANOTHER ONE dropped) and made a Paper Mario Styled hack. At least, it isn't some rip off of some other Paper Mario game thats already made, this one has original Graphics choices, and is made to be different from ALL the other Paper Mario games.

Plot: Mario was tired from all his adventures. He'd had enough. So he decided to go on a holiday. He found a spot in the Mushroom Kingdom he had NEVER been to, and started heading over there. When he got there, he found the place was HEAVEN! It was a great time, until he found the map. This map showed a secret place hidden in a mountain in the Kingdom. But to get into this place, he needs to collect the 7 Shine Sprites that are hidden in the kingdom. But people rumor that this secret place contains pure evil. Will Mario find riches? Will he find evil? And when is Bowser going to make an appearance?

The Title Screen. Does it look alright?


The "Overworld." Its mainly just some "tiles" I made on a black background. As you can see, there are "Chapters" each have a shine sprite in it. If you can guess what each tile represents, you win a cookie!


The start of the first level! I'm quite happy with the FG pallete on this level.


The thing that ends the level, a "Star" block. (Note: the star actually spins around.)


Going up! (There are no enemies in this level yet. Thats how I design my levels, I make the Level Design, then add the enemies in last.


The arrow told me to go down...

ASM LIST:
- Paper Mario Styled Health
- No Score
- No lives (Game over if you die)
- Safe fall (If you fall off the edge, you lose 1 point of health and bounce back up)
- No Item Box
- No Bonus Stars
- No Spin Jump
- "Secret"

Stuff I hope to be implimented:
- Some sort of "Hammer"
- Star Pieces to collect!

Stuff thats impossible to put in:
- A Stage for battle.
- Inventory
- "Levels"

I'm liking what I see Selin. Very nice level design, graphics, and palette. Keep up the good work.
I like the overworld, and the level palettes are alright too! It looks like the levels have variation too, which is great.

I guess you're going to add custom music too?

As for the Mario GFX it seems kinda paper-ish and not fully paper ish.
Maybe get rid of the white in his eyes...

Wow I like this concept.I was wondering when someone would apply a Paper Mario-ish Style game to the SMW.I like where your going with this.

I'll keep my eye on the progress for sure.

I love everything you've done so far, Selin. The PM series will always be one of my favorites, and it looks like you've got it down pat.
I especially like what you've done with the overworld, though. Looks nice.

Couldn't you make the sprites you come in contact with warp you to a new level which has the battle field and a certain amount of enemies? It isn't all that impossible.

Hmm, I'll guess the tiles represent what type of level the star shaped thing beside them.

The first tile and second tile represent a grassland area.
The third tile represents a underground level.
The fourth tile represents a boss level.
The Question Mark Tile represents a secret level.

My only complaint is that the Title Screen looks a little bland. Add some HDMA or vanilla HDMA and draw some clouds or something to make it look like you're staring at the ocean with the title font right where it is. Otherwise, nice job so far.

This looks nice. But, shouldn't you put DOTS for Mario's eyes?? That's Mario's eyes for Paper Mario. I'm NOT trying to make you mad. I'm just suggesting. I hope you can put a Mario Icon with a heart to the left of the HP counter. That's the HP icon in Paper Mario 2. And, put Mario's hands down on his sides and make them in fists. Also make the PM2 jump. Probaly, you could put Mario' voice from PMTTYD. I am suggesting you make this more Paper Marioish.
I like what I'm seeing Selin, your concept is very interesting, and thank god it doesn't have to do with any princess kidnapping. The title screen is very basic, but the BG goes wonderful with the font, now all you need is some slow scrolling and you're good to go!

The overworld is also extremely basic, but that's great for the type of style you have going there, very SMB1-ish, which goes wonderful on a basic design. Great idea there, Selin.

That level is very interesting, the FG and BG match perfectly, and I'm very happy to see some complex tile work for the level design.

The only thing I don't like much is the status bar, I would suggest changing the HP counter to a heart counter similiar to the one in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. The coins look fine as they are, though. Of course this is just my opinion.

Overall it looks like a wonderful, interesting, just overall fantastic hack.

A stage for battle isn't impossible. Just try what CDPower suggested (if you want to try it at all).

The Mario graphics don't seem too Paper Mario-ish, as said before. Maybe some slight tweaks would make it better. I'm also interested in what you'll make the enemy sprites look like.

Overall, it's looking pretty good.

He could use the sm64 lava fix custom block and modify the gfx so that it does something similar. :3

Do you realize how hard it is to insert voices? One voice clip will cost so many samples that you'll be sacrificing most of the games music, and even then, the voice won't sound very good. Besides, do YOU want to go through all that trouble? I think not.

Anyways, looking good! I like the GFX choices, and the theme. May I recommend using the Paper Mario-like GFX you made for Man in the Red Cap? And maybe you could ask Koopinator for some of his.

Thats the thing. I cant do alot of the things you've just said. The HP stays as it is. I'm not trying to completely copy some other Paper mario game, it has my own features.

And the stage idea, that would chew up level, not to mention custom sprite, space so badly, so I dont think i'll try that.

And dont worry. Those annoying things from Paper Mario 2 in the water wont be coming back. You can swim through the water.

Mario has been made more Paper Marioish. Will get screens up soon.

More of a long term project. I MAY release a small 1 world demo at C3, i'm not sure though.

And, there will probably be about 8 worlds, so... about 32 normal levels, and about 10 or so secret levels.
