2nd Annual Kaizo Level Design Contest - Completed

Link Thread Closed

I'll probably enter a level. A while back I was planning on making a kaizo hack and I started making a few levels. I later changed my mind and am currently instead working on a puzzle hack. I'll probably finish one of the levels I started and enter it.
I'll make a level, but I'll probably reuse some parts of my level from last year since I'm a lazy prick and thought some of my traps were awesome and very original.

Wait, am I being a complete moron or can you enter two levels, one for each category (just checking, feels like such a waste if I make two levels and one is useless)? Also I'm pretty interested in the glitches allowed to be used, although I'll probably use only a few well-know glitches.

I'm in, and I've already got some ideas worth 3 screens of Kaizo #w{=)}
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.

Oooh look at my userbar!

No you don't have to (as far as I know), I'm just mentioning it :)

When will this compilation be released? I assume this will only be a few weeks after the final deadline, no?

Also there are a few glitches from the list in the WoI I'd like to know if they are considered too hard, I decided to be impertinent and post the numbers here:

7 (I hate this glitch... but meh), 10+spinoffs, 15, 17 (there is a surprisingly large error margin), 29, 40, 44, 45, 48, 75.
I think for most other glitches it is pretty obvious if they should be used or not.

Preview (I will most propably upload next versions, this is just difficulty preview, if you cannot beat it don't say it's unbeatable).
DOESN'T REQUIRE WALLJUMP OR ANYTHING HARDCORE. You won't need slowdown to beat that. Only savestates/rewinds. From what I think some guys cannot even beat first room. Don't ask me about it!

http://bin.smwcentral.net/15038/firstversion.ips (codename: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE)

NOTE: It's preview, not last version which will be ready. Just to show progress.

EDIT: You have to go to Yoshi's Island 2 to play it!
could this be a contender for a short term sticky much ?

and just to say i have to test my 1st sub level now (im doing around 5ish)

I have a question... Are we allowed to make it so that you have to use the turbo keys? Like, in my level, you have to swim upwards very fast, so fast that its almost impossible without turbo.

Of course. I'd have to play through them anyways, it's no biggie to simply turn on recording during the judging.

For the glitches, I do not believe it is best to have an absolute list of what is and isn't allowed. It's a Kaizo contest after all. Use judgement, and message blocks if necessary. If it is overly difficult, rethink your idea or consider the "Difficult" category. If it is obscure, explain it a bit in a message block.

oh ya, one more question... how hard i just right? because i found the first colab rather easy except bowsers ruins and haunted path...

im guessing not as hard as pit of despair (thats moltov's less hard one level rom hack right?)

"Creative" should simply be hard and challenging. "Difficult" is explanatory. Use your judgement.

Could I send a one-level Kaizo hack demo of mine to enter the competition?

Sure, just tweak it as necessary so it can stand-alone as it's own entry.

sorry if this is looking spammy, but i have another question... is there a limit to how big and long a level can be? or like a limit to the amount of rooms?

Again, use your judgement. You want the level to be interesting. If the level is too long, it'll bore the player, unless you keep things fresh.

I'll release it as soon as the deadline is over and I've downloaded them all. I'll additionally make a small re-release once the results are in.

I'm assuming this is not your official entry. If it was, I'd expect that you'd state which category it is to be entered.

Only official contests of SMWC that result in real trophies are stickied or Display Case'd.

This is not something regular humans can do, but the same applies to regular Kaizo, in regards to savestates. So clearly, it is acceptable, as tool-assistance is required to play Kaizo.

Yay, It's here :D
Figured I'd post in this thread too. ^^
I'll be joining this contest for sure (as I mentioned in the kaizo hack submission thread), got some neat ideas already :D
Also, would you mind if I TAS'd every entry too (Probably using the Compilation you're making)?
Would give me something to do when I'm bored. xD

Does this mean we aren't allowed to have puzzles?

I do not mind.

It must be obviously accessible on the Overworld, so there is no confusion as to what must be judged. Fixed.

does this mean i could submit a really hard puzzle that is harder than most kaizo hacks, but does not try to kill you? would that still be considered kaizo?

Yes, it'd be Kaizo. It'd be acceptable in the "Creativity" category, as it's aim is not to be very difficult, it just is. If it's excruciating though, then rethink your plans.

custom OW allowed (noobie wuestion i know)?

and if so can we have yoshi's house for starter messages and stuff?

well the puzzles will be pretty hard, but i will give a lot, to no time limit... also, i was thinking of putting it in the creativity category! also, am i allowed to do this: have a sprite that is a goal point sphere, and when you touch it, you do the goal walk, but no score thing appears, and at the end when the screen encloses you enter the next puzzle, that way i can put many kaizo trap puzzles. thanx! xD

Just out of curiosity, what if someone made a puzzle level that was extremely difficult but the difficulty came almost exclusively from figuring out what the solution was rather than executing it. But once the solution was known the level was no harder than the original SMW to beat. Would such a level be considered Kaizo?

And as a follow up question, what if the puzzle was so hard and complex that the time it takes to figure out the solution was way longer than the time it takes to beat any other Kaizo level. Would such a level have the potential to win the difficulty section?

i already asked that, he said, that puzzles that are hard to solve but not out to kill you are considered kaizo, and it would be good in the creativity section. as for time i am not sure, im gonna make a puzzle hack for creativity, but wont have time limits, or at least have minimal time limits...

I believe that the "Difficulty" category is only capable of being geared towards the actual playing the level, not beating it.
