Translucency


Is it possible without using YY-CHR to achieve a translucent type effect for ground, or other objects?

If so, would I go about achieving that effect in the 8x8 editor? Or is it just with Palettes?

Well, you can use modes 1E and 1F. However, mode 1E will turn transparent every tile (I won't think you will like that) and Mode 1F turn makes transparent Layer 2. Also you can use Transparent Layer 3 Generator from sprites section, however if you're using default water, it will look bad). You must have whole layer transparent or not. It's hardware limitation.

You can always do however, palette trickery to simulate that, but it's pretty hard to do.

Without YY-CHR? it can't do it, and to do it, do what Glitch.Mr says.
You can make translucent sprites using the "Horizontal dark BG level", number 11 in the "change properties in header" option.

It's imposible to see it in the 8x8 editor, and affects just FG, without the need of a specific pallete.

Actually, 11 is for the spotlight. 0C is the one you're after.

1E is what I was looking for thanks :D

Although, now I have a new problem... when I did that it made about half the sprites invisible.

Any thoughts?

Transparency shouldn't affect sprites. What sprites do you have? I heard the Banzai Bills need to have mode 00 (however, I won't confirmed that).

I apologize for the delay in responding to your question Glitch.Mr . I was away for a few days, and have not had the chance to respond.

The sprites that went invisible were blarggs and piranha plants (both jumping and the ones that come vertically down out of pipes). They were stock for the level 10A, and I have made no other changes to the level or sprites other then deleting a few sprites off the level, and the aforementioned mode change.

The buzzy beetles show up fine.

Edit: Also, the mushrooms start invisible when they are coming out of the ? block, but when they are fully out then they are visible normally.
