Game Boy Adventure

Standard

I'd like to present my first ever attempt at a super mario world hack!

As the name suggests it's based in classic Gameboy games, and uses similar graphics.

I have a interesting story in mind, but I'm not ready to reveal it just yet.

Here are some screens: (hope they show up)

From a Kirby ice world

Good old Macro Zone, beware of ants!

Odd? Is color trying to disrupt the peacful world of Gameboy Land?

That's all I can show for now, thoughts?

Very creative. I'm liking the concept and hack already. One nitpick is, you're saying that color is invading, but the Status Bar has color. And it might be better to make Mario not look so out of place, by changing his GFX to be more classic. Or if you really want to, you can change his GFX to be the original protagonist of each game using this.

Anyhow, great first post, and great first hack. Welcome to SMWC! Enjoy your stay. :D
Looks pretty nice so far. It's a cool concept and I hope you get it done. :D
thoughts: looks interesting i guess. post more screens so i can decide if i'll continue watching this thread.

Wow thanks for the warm welcome! I'll fix the color in the status bar.

Oh! What could this be?

It's getting rather hot! That lava is animated.
That looks good. Very promising.

Actually, you should make the status bar gray too.

Change Mario's graphics as well. He looks unfitting with his environment.

What are the Scarfies from Kirby like in the ice world screen?
Looks cool. If color is invanding the Gameboy land, what about the status bar?
Awesome concept! Best of luck with us!

You could make it a health based hack where the health meter is more colorful the lower it is...
KIRBY DANCE!

postcount++ much?

Anyway, I'm with the consensus here. I like the concept and the screens look nice. Just change the colors of the status bar and you have a unique hack on your hands.

Hardly, he was merely pointing out people's idiocy for not reading the rest of the posts, especially by the creator, before posting.

Anyways, I like the style of the graphics so far, even if some of them look a little too good for the original GB. An interesting hack overall.
Props to Huflungdu for great reading comprehension skills! One thing I'm interested in about this hack is the music that will be inserted. I assume an assortment of tracks from Gameboy games would fit nicely.

This is a MAJOR win in my book!
If anyone needs help with custom Character GFX,PM me.
<Note> You will have to have a progress thread in order for me to work on GFX for you.No random requests.
This is a romhack, but it's not a bad one.

I'm surprised no-one has accused you of ripping off SML4 yet. (Not that I am)

It's a very interesting concept, and i'm wondering where this goes.
I can honestly say that you're my favorite newbie. Not only do you have a grasp of what is acceptable in a good hack, you've shown that you know how to work your way around Lunar Magic and all of its features. I am very much looking forward to progress. Just be careful you don't break the 3 color rule!
Thank you all for your nice comments!

Here is one of the enemies, gfx replacement for the small dinosaur.

With changed up fire.

Waddledoo squad!

Sorry I haven't had much time to post lately, I'll back with more tommorow!(hopefully)

The Waddledoo Squad is awesome.

How many levels are you planning?

This is quite a hack, already. And you revealed it with your first post! Whoa!
Anyway, you should still decolorfy the status bar. Use this status bar editor.

Everyone should go to #radbusiness, my epic irc channel, RIGHT NOW!
Layout by the super-mega-awesome Counterfeit! THANKS!
Taking ASM requests! PM me if ya want something, but don't ask for sprites.
Also please install Dropbox It'll help both you and me! :3

It's hard to say how many levels right now, but I'd expect around 20 or more. I'm planning on keeping it pretty short, but I could change my mind.

I'm also unsure if I'll keep the original mario player gfx or not.

A cool feature I'm thinking of putting into the hack is to have points where you can choose where you want to go or what action you want to take, and that'll affect the story, and the ending.

For example you could choose to chase down a character or to ignore him, or you could enter the forest or the cave etc. So in one case you would take the regular exit(chase him!) and the other you'd take the secret exit (won't be actually secret but you know). So for the most part the point of a split path in the story will be obvious but at sometimes I may make the choice less obvious (like if you fall in a certain pit something could happen, but making the jump causes something else to happen).

I've been thinking of having 3 different endings: Good, bad, and cliffhanger.

Hope I explained that well. Yeah I’m still working on the story; I’ll reveal it soon.
I’m going away for Spring Break next week and won’t be posting for about a week or more, but feel free to comment on anything I revealed or to suggest anything you would think would fit well in this sort of hack(I’m open to all sorts of suggestions, as long as I like them). Also the name “Game Boy Adventure” isn’t planned to be the final name, once I got the story down I’ll probably rename it.

Oh yeah and the Scarfies from kirby are vertical electicity sprites with invisible "mario pass only" blocks above and below them.
