Hey, that's almost what I do :P
The exception is that I only work on Kaizo hacks; I'd be working on my hack, then get an epiphany, and suddenly remember a trap I've done before, neglected to put, just thought of, etc.
Oh, and you are looking forward to the hack? Thanks! I've used YY-CHR to change the graphics a little bit, and carefully worked on the level design. Apparently, people like it when Kaizo hacks don't consist of floating munchers and no dirt, grass, etc.
@LegendaryMMAT: Thank you for your input. I will definitely consider the time limit suggestion, as I was planning on shortening it anyway. I'll probably make it around 50, then create a hidden way for the player increase it as they go along.

@HuFlungDu, that level is too easy.

Agreed. It's clear that Kaizo hacking isn't my strong suit.

In the ending, there is a coin block. It's useless, and it just makes it easier to players that didn't know to bring a P-Switch. Remove it, because the P-Switch cannot be walked over. You can just lay the switch next to the goal sphere, and it'll simply block the player from death.

I don't think that the coin gives any greater hint other than what the item is. I mean, if you see a ledge with just a goal sphere and you will clearly fall off, you'r going to know that you need an item, be it a key or a P-switch or whatever. Then only difference is that now you know it's a P-switch. Great, that doesn't really help you get to it too much better. Also, as you and Sadistic Designer proved, the coin will help since seasoned Kaizo hack players will think that they can just get the goal and the P-switch will block their way, while actually the P-Switch will disappear. It's a minor trap, but a trap none the less.

the jumps are childish

I gotta tell you, I have no idea what this means, would you care to elaborate?
@HuFlungDu, of course. It simply means that they're too easy! The opening is too much like Kaizo 1, the shell jumps are too easy, the areas you need to walljump at are obvious, and ARGH. (I'm angry, mehehehe)
You can fix this problem by using the obvious against the players: complicate the jumps. Put death blocks around the area you walljump at, leaving a gap to walljump. This will add precision jumping to the equation. Also, be sure to cover up areas you don't want the players to walljump at with death blocks so they cannot break the level (I've foiled you again, Sadistic Designer). About the shells, you could throw in a few double, triple, or even quadrouple (ooh, an unheard of trap. How delightful) shell jumps to make the player more reliant on their items. This also adds precision jumping to the equation, along with timing.
So, your final equation is...
precision jumping² + walljump = Kaizo + Moltov
accuracy x timing
I'm almost finished the world 1 demo for rising darkness(the other was a beta).

heres what I need to change:

-entirely fix the intro , yoshi's house and the first level trap to not make it so unfair.

- Make easy start very longer *55% done*

- additional tests for too many goals *not started*

- make red switch palace more "fun" *not started*

- testing power of 5 *not started*

world 2 overworld is complete already working on world 3(final world + custom boss that is only a auto scroll background where you only need to survive). Anything else that needs to be fixed?
@HuFlungDu:

I have to tell you I really liked the part near the end of the video, where you made the player get past the muncher, to get the already-thrown P-switch. Very creative, do you mind if I use that idea at some point?

Thanks, Mapsking

eh, sure, I'm open source. If you see an idea from me, you can take it without asking. However, you are going to need the patch to allow you to slide over munchers (unless you have another way of doing it?) for it to work.
Actually, I didn't realize there was a patch in it, I thought you had maybe just had enough momentum or something, if timed just right...

Thanks, Mapsking

That happens to me too, I get bored, start thinking, find some mean trap, and abuse it. :D

Yeah, I'm looking forward to your hack. :P
I agree on preferring Kaizo hacks that actually have dirt, grass, decoration, and no stacked munchers. ^^

Fairly Unfair (Updated)
This update is to prevent breaking any part of the level. Chances are, it's still possible; you'll just have to find new different ways of doing so. As usual, this is VERY difficult and is actually meant to be played with SLOWDOWN. If you don't like it, then play a different Kaizo.

@Patgangster: If you dislike floating munchers and like decoration, try my hack.

I've tried it, and I like it. :)
I've seen a few TAS's of the older versions (without the break fixes.) a while ago, it's a nice kaizo hack. :)

Also, expect some new kaizo levels from me soon too. ^^
(and by the way, shouldn't Kaizo Hack Submissions be changed to Kaizo hack Submissions and Discussion or something? This thread has been used for discussing Kaizo hacks for a while too now. :) )

@Patgangster

The same things applies to my hack, Mario's Evil Level. There are no stacked/floating munchers, no cutoff, everything is very detailed, graphically, and aesthetically, you'd probably like it.

Thanks, Mapsking

@mapsking

I looked at Mario's Evil Level, and that looks WAY evil. I might try playing it soon. ^^

Also, I will soon post a video of my other new kaizo hack, which is actually really low on muncher usage.

only two more things to do and demo 1 should be ready.

-entirely fix the intro , yoshi's house and the first level trap to not make it so unfair.

- Make easy start very longer

- additional tests for too many goals

- make red switch palace more "fun" *34% done*

- testing power of 5 *not started*

The red switch could be short but its a big puzzle room

and to make sure that power of 5 works and is possible
I also fixed yoshi's house and give a hint to make the mushroom easier to find.

Here we go - a video from the other kaizo hack I'm working on.
This one actually uses WAY less munchers/kill blocks/whatever than the other one - It tries to kill you in other ways.

@Patgangster, awesome! Those hammer brothers must've been on something, because no human (or flying armored turtle) can throw that many hammers at one moment. I LOVE IT.
It seems really hard, especially when the screen auto-scrolled (medium speed, I think). I'm not going to even THINK about TASing it, let alone LPing it.
So, good luck on the hack! I expect a lot, coming from the guy that came up with "One Level Kaizo" (or whatever it was called, I'm stupid).

I updated fairly unfair for SyStemkraSh. :> and did some more link clean up and alphabetizing. For all you perfectionists out there.

i'm not gonna lie i don't like the direction most kaizo hacks are going where they're all based around shell/key jumps ALL DAY

patgangster had a very good level because it you know played kind of differently
Hi, im new to this site and forum, although ive been playing SMW romhacks for a while. I'd love to try these out, but i can't get any of them to run. Once I open up the emulator and load the rom, it says "bad checksum" and doesnt play. I also noticed all of these are .ips files whereas the others i play are .smw i think. Can someone please tell me how to get these .ips files to work with zsnes or snes9x?

P.S. What does "bad checksum" even mean? I've seen this with a few other roms, and i could never figure out what it meant or how to fix it.
You need to download the tool called Lunar IPS, which is found on this site, and patch whatever .ips file you have to a clean SMW ROM. However, you cannot ask for or post ROMs here; you have to search for one yourself.

Also, welcome to SMWCentral!

I'm probably retired tbh
Download Lunar IPS, then get a CLEAN SMW ROM on GOOGLE!! DO NOT ASK FOR ROM LINKS AT THIS FORUM...

Then, open Lunar IPS, select your clean ROM and your IPS patch, then patch it. Open in Zsnes (or snes9x) and play... But be warned, these hacks are hard. If you want to start, I suggest you play easy hacks, then medium, then go extreme, but its your choice. There are more hacks on the sidebar of SMWC, click on "Hacks"

Bad Chksum, I forget what it means...

Oh yeah, HERE is an online tool to see if your ROM is clean.
