If you did this for a living

So the other day I was visiting at my parents house because my brother just came home from Iraq the day before, so I was there to visit with him. Technically I didn't really visit with him too much since I'm not very social, but the point here is that I was at my parents house. Anyways, sometimes my parents will baby sit my youth pastor's kids for them when they go on conferences or what not. This was one of those days. So I'm sitting on my laptop working on my level for the vanilla level design contest, and my youth pastors daughter (she's 4) comes up and starts talking to me. Eventually she asks: "Is this your job?" I said "no, but I wish it was". Then that got me thinking, this might be the greatest job of all time. What would it be like if we all, or even just you if your selfish like that, got payed to hack Mario? That would be great and all, but then I started thinking that maybe if it was our job, we may not even like doing it anymore, maybe it would just become another "thing" to us. Anyways, just curious what other people think about this.
Yeah, I seriously want a job in video game engineering. Then I could get payed for that. But I don't know if I'll create the characters, make the landscape, or test the game. Any one of those would be cool.
60% of the time, works every time.

I was looking into game design in the future, but my mother insists on architecture (because that's what I liked when I was... two?)
But yeah, I'd love being payed to hack Super Mario World.
In fact, I'd probably stop being lazy and learn basic ASM. B)
But of course, if I was forced to do things in a way I didn't want to, then it wouldn't be enjoyable.
Some people think that being able to move platforms around in a window gives them skills to design video games. Unless you code, I don't see anyone going anywhere.

I would never leave work. If SMW hacking was a job, it would be the best job ever. I would get payed to sit around and do what I normally do. It would also get me more motivated to learn stuff like programming. Game Designing for a job would be awesome.

Agreed, but who's talking about real life here?

Yeah, so what if I haven't shoveled out my signature yet, I'll get to it later.

Yeah, I'd worry that hacking SMW for fun, which most of us do, would then descend into a job, an obligation. We're not forced to do any of the things we do now, and I think having to do them to keep ourselves alive would only result in a loss of creativity, lower quality in our actual projects, and that overall loss of fun.

I've considered going into game designing and engineering as a career, but ultimately decided not to. I really don't like how the system works, with companies cutting corners, making decisions just to boost popularity, and churning out sequels just to make cash. I'd rather have a main career with a little something like this to do for fun.
Yeah, I'm sure nobody would mind getting paid to do this, but this isn't the type of thing that would work if it were a corporation.

However, if I were to go into the video game industry, I'd opt for a plot development position. Designing a cool plot is just as fun (if not more fun) than designing a cool level to me.

I'd gladly have a job to hack Super Mario World. As long as it was just level design and very very basic asm. Also depends how long we had to work. But this isn't really making games. Somebody smart just made a program so basically anyone can edit the levels. If there is a real job of this, count me in!
Well, it IS a fun job...

I would be pretty happy if I had a job like this and if it came with good pay, I would be extremely happy!
Being paid to hack SMW... At first, I would feel like it was a dream come true. But, as time would go by, I would run out of ideas, and I would not like the job as much. Besides, I still need to learn ASM (which, hopefully, will be done this summer with my extended free time).

I'm probably retired tbh
And, as Maxx mentioned in my Japanese ASM question thread, the main thing holding us back is laziness. If we had a schedule made by a boss, we would make much better hacks.

However, if I actually did get into the game creation business, I'd rather be a plot designer, rather than actually designing the game.
I'd rather get paid for something I do in programming or website development. Hacking hasn't been very fun for me lately ... all the games are mediocre. I'd rather learn how to create Touhou levels with Danmakufu but the language is a little complicated and I'd rather wait for the new edition a user called Nuclear Cheese is making (from a different website).

Basically, I'd rather run a website like Kieran is doing, or create some revolutionary program everyone pays 5 dollars to use. I'd be rich, while I spend my days making Art in my studio selling paintings on eBay. <3
I am going to pursue a degree in computer programming, apparently it has a lower pay, but is fun.

Where I am the average salary for computer programmers is like 6 digits, so I'm not really sure what it's lower pay than in particular, but that's plenty of money for me. I too am pursuing a career in computer programming.
Hmmm, it would be cool to do this for a living, something that sparks my interest but I'm actually the type of person who takes pride in actual work that involves physical activity, one of the reasons I'm a mechanic, I used to help out with Carpentry and things of that nature, I like working with my hands, getting dirty, it feels more satisfying, that's just me though. :\

I think a post layout goes here somewhere...
I'd love to get payed for it! Also, I think that it would encourage more people to get into Mario hacking as you'd get payed. I would definitely look into learning ASM and whatnot.

I really wouldn't want to get payed for just moving objects around in a level editor since it hardly involves any effort especially since LM contains a crapload of ASM hacks to make everything easier.. it'd just be boring. I'd rather program games instead.
Yes, this is an interesting question, indeed. Obviously SMW hacking is just a hobby, people make level to entertain themselves or others, sometimes to challenge others. A job is a quite different thing, I think. Of course, it would be so great, if someone would pay for my levels and such, but it'd be boring after a while, like every "normal" jobs. This may sound interesting, but I don't really notice, that I actually hack SMW. I don't really work on my levels too often, it's just a few hours, that I spend in a week to make levels and thinking on new ideas. My mind goes on school/girls/etc. in general.
