I'm working on a hack called "Super Walljump world" it uses the new walljump patch.

So no, don't worry. (There is a glitch abused at one point though)

Also, this thread should be stickied.
Finally! I just beat Tangy in Yet Another Mario World (star world) without slowdown, I ran out of time last time I tried and had to restart the level after getting to the P-switch room section...

I wonder what more horrors await me...

Also I can't seem to get past LINE RIDER II, on screen 09 the platform turns back and I can't continue...
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.

Oooh look at my userbar!

Your choice, is it a well-made TAW, or a poorly-done TAS? β)

WOAH A PHILOSOPHY QUESTION

MAH BRAINS

I still think its a TAW though |-O
You guys should stop talking about that... This is a Kaizo thread. Not a TAS/TAW thread, but somebody should make one D:

To be honest about it.
It's a TAW and now stop D:

You can use my speedrun thread in "Gaming"
Speaking of which, someone should make a new TAS/TAW of Mario's Evil Level... Someone other than me, lol :-P

Thanks, Mapsking

Uhhhh... GRASS KILLS YOU?! :O

How do I get past ALL that?

EDIT: Made it! :)
Spinjumping....?
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.

Uhhh... with the P(MK)-Switch too. Mario jumps too high to do a spinjump on the Grinder. I got past it but now I'm at a bunch of Midway bars which also KILL you too. And there's invisible Coin blocks! No idea how to get past there.
Why is it that when I compare any other hack to Cool or Cruel, Cool or Cruel makes the other hack look like garbage?

It just seems like nobody has ever come close to matching worldpeace's level design concepts. I'm sorry if anyone is insulted by this.

I would really like to be proven wrong. Someone please show me Kaizo (or not even Kaizo, maybe just regular platforming) level design that's better than Cool or Cruel.

I look forward to your replies.

I'm in the process of making a hack that includes graphics I downloaded from SMWCentral (only the player is changed though :O) and custom music from multiple places (that I cannot remember). It's going to be my best romhack yet, but it would only be a single-level game. Not to mention the element of Kaizo added in...

But anyway, as I've said, I'm only in the PROCESS of making it, I've only just done part of the first room of the level. I need tips of how to make sadistic Kaizo traps. HOW DO I DOEZ?!
I'm working on the finishing touches of my first hack, I just need people skilled enough to playtest it...

I could help you with those Kaizo traps, here's how I create levels:

1) Wait until you have an idea what type of level you want to make. A good example would be 'Line-guided' or 'Vertical Castle (moving Layer 2)'

2) Put some blocks together. Don't start making the start of the level, just start midway.

3) Make sure it is literally IMPOSSIBLE, that some parts cannot be played(!!!)

4) Break your own level.

5) Go to step 3, removing your path to break the level. Continue until at least 15 people say your level is impossible, now edit one step back.

Hurray! You have just designed a devilish trap!

Edit: I'm not sure whether you can ask for playtesters in this threadm but seeing as my hack is a kaizo one and playtesters are defnitely a part of progress and this thread is devoted to progress in kaizo hacks I figured I'd be OK.

I'm going to need a boatload of playtesters for my hack. It is a kaizo hack, and for those who don't know yet: IT IS HARD.

There are two segments in particular which I need to be tested thoroughly (those segments are among the hardest parts of my hack though), and I need my hack to be tested generally. If you don't feel like playing through a Kaizo Hack but want to test something for me contact me for those segments.
NOTE: Please do NOT contact me if you have little or no experience with Kaizo Hacks as my hack is just a tad hard...no I'm serious without experience it's going to be too hard to beat.

Since I don't expect many people to produce results I will constantly be looking for more playtesters. I know this sounds arrogant but experience has proven me right...

What I hope to receive comments on are:

-Graphics, such as cutoff, non-matching palettes, odd sprites etc.
-Breakability, if you think at any moment you have not played the level as I intended I hope to hear this from you. Perhaps you can make a video or some screenshots with drawn arrows to show the paths you have taken, I'm really curious as to how people play my hack
-Glitches/Bugs. You will need to use these to get through the levels, but odd glitches will have to be removed.
-Your personal opinion about levels/level segments and level design.

Not included in the hack yet (no comments on this please):
-Custom Music
-A storyline (well, perhaps I won't add one as it is a Kaizo Hack)
-An ending boss (I am working on the final level)

Well, a final warning for anybody interested in trying: MY HACK IS HARD. Don't expect any mercy.

Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.

Oooh look at my userbar!

Obviously nobody can show a hack with better level design. Cool or Cruel's creative ideas, ultimate glitch-abuses just beat all of the other Kaizo hacks.
I think, there are 3 Kaizo hack groups:
- The "simple, normal" Kaizo hacks, they aren't way too hard, not many new ideas.
- "Mad Rage" hacks, they contain a crapload of killblocks, they are very fast and need massive slowdown/savestates. For example: Pit of Death.
- "Puzzle" hacks, they need thinking, they have the most complex levels. For example: Cool or Cruel.

Of course these are just my groups, I just thought into it.
I think your grouping is on the right track, but a fourth category should be added (my favourite). These are hacks that only use origional game elements (note: Not Vanilla hacks, this is a bit broader) and push it to the limits without asking for slowdown or frame advance. You'd be surprised to see how many hard and interesting levels can be made from just SMW parts even without puzzle hacks.

Personally I'm not that big a fan of C|C but anybody's got to admit the level design is great.
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.

Yes, but I'm lazy.

I mean ideas for glitches and traps, like having precise single-block jumps that end up taking you into a death hole. (WOW I CAME UP WITH AN IDEA BY BEING LAZY O.O) If you could actually EXPLAIN traps out to me, that would work. KTHXBAI :)

But why is this? Are other level designers just lazy or is worldpeace just that brilliant? Do you know of any hacks that come close?

That'd be the same as giving away my good levels wouldn't it? :P
Try to beat my hack and place my puzzles in different contexts. Everybody does that (subconsciously or not, everybody does that). If you're really kind you could dedicate a level name to a trap from somebody else, but the only help on GETTING ideas I can give is play a lot of good Kaizo Hacks and take the levels apart in tiny bits and pieces for inspiration.

@sym: Mine gets pretty close! (just kidding)
There's one level I have enough confidence in to place it as a brilliant puzzle level, and another one that could almost fit in with C|C (if you edit some graphics, of course. I like vanilla).
But then again most creators think their levels are good enough to compare with masterpieces so my word holds not a lot of value here.
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.

...

EVERYTHING kills me there. The 2nd patch of grass kills me, the midway bars kill me and the brown cement blocks are FALL THROUGH. There's also FIVE invisible Coin blocks where I jumped.

The fact that there are still MORE levels after this makes me think how much harder this'll get.
