ZSNES + Vista = Lag?

Hello! I'm new here.

I recently downloaded ZSNES and a sweet Super Mario World ROM. Keep in mind I have Vista. I tried to run ZSNES and it lagged my computer to hell. Everything went so slow that it froze for about 30 seconds, then unfroze for a split second, and froze again and repeated. I had to reboot to get out of that hellish state. I would appreciate any help you could bless upon me. Thanks in advance :)

What version of ZSNES?

Also, keep in mind alot of things dont work on vista because it's so different from earlier versions of windows. Try SNES9X.
<TLMB> I use YY-CHR to edit DNA
Well, the download has 151 at the end of it so I guess it's version 1.51?

Also, I'll try SNES9X right now... I'll tell you how it goes. Although, I'd rather have ZSNES :(

Yes, that's common. Vista uses DX10, and Zsnes chokes on that.

Try the compatibilty mode setting in Vista. What edition of Vista is yours?

Strange I use Vista Premium, I use the latest version of ZSNES. No lag whatsoever, and I don't even run it in XP mode. Maybe it doesn't happen with all Vista PCs?
I tried to run it in Compatiblity Mode > Windows XP, but it still lags.

Ok, NeverHappy, what are your computer's specs?

ZSNES runs fine on my computer.

The issue is probably on your computer's end instead of on Vista's end as a whole.

May I suggest you trying Zsnes 1.50, it's the best one of the Zsnes emulators that are out, IMO.
Windows Edition

Windows Vista Home Premium
Service Pack 1

System

Manufacturer : Hewlett-Packard
Model : HP Pavilion dv6700 Notebook PC
Processor : Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T2330 @ 1.60GHz 1.60 GHz
Memory (RAM) : 2.00 GB
System Type : 32-bit Operating System

---

Local Disk (C:) 27.7 GB free of 137 GB
(D:) 1.88 GB free of 11.8 GB

Hope that helps.

And BTW, version 1.50 didn't work.
I have almost the same as you NeverHappy, except my pocessor is Core 2 Duo, which is far better than Pentium Dual Core IMO. Probably your computer, and it probably has almost nothing to do with your CPU, because, I mean, ZSNES can run on Penium 4 perfectly fine, maybe even P3.
Hehe, I've had Pentium 2 back in September (Windows 98). I doubt any kind of SNES Emulator would do good jobs on that one.

Ho, but anyways, ZSNES 1.41 is also a good replace, if 1.50 doesn't work correctly.

I have Intel (R) Celeron (R) 420 @ 1.60 GHz 1.60 GHz
I think it doesn't matter much. My RAM memory is just 767 MB, even, although that might have nothing to do with it.

1.41 Doesn't work either.
Just look around for a copy of XP. However.. i heard that they are hard to get... i hate the fact that Lunar Magic wont run on Linux(Via Wine) and my friend cant get Lunar Magic running on his Vista PC( Correct me if you can do LM on Vista, as i havent tried it yet.). Even if you can get a decent SNES Emulator running on your OS you might need XP to do any actual hacking(that is why you are on this site, right?).

Good luck getting anything done on Microsoft's crappy new OS, and dont think I will ever switch to that crud. I would give you a copy of XP but for Obvious reasons i cant.

Lunar Magic DOES work on Vista, just to confirm.

I can get Wine to run Lunar Magic, using my linux installation. I will load it up sometime. I've run many other apps on my linux installation using Wine without fail. :)

GasparXR, it's not the computer side of things. You use, Vista uses DirectX 10. Zsnes requires DirectX 8.0+. However, it's not suited for vista, as DX10 was rewritten from stratch for Vista.

I would do this:

1. Buy Windows XP Professional SP2 from your computer store.
2. Backup your data to DVDs or external HDDs, and then boot from the XP disc.
3. When it says where to install XP, it will list all the partitions on your computer's HDD. Simply delete the biggest partition (if you have a recovery partition for your computer, DON'T DELETE that one) and then, where it says "Unpartitioned Space", simply create a partition with half the max amount of space you can have. It'll make a new partition where you can install XP to. After that, you'll get another "Unpartitioned Space". Create a new partition, but leave this one for vista. Select the first one you made, and press enter. Format with the NTFS file system.

If all else fails, simply buy a reasonable old PC and run LM on that.

I can get ZSNES as well as Lunar Magic to run on Vista just fine.
My computer's CPU is an AMD Sempron processor.
Have you tried switching display modes?
Some of the modes really bog the computers down.
I guess it also depends on what graphics card you have installed into your computer.

I have the same problem, too. But my computer lags every second, non-stop. My computer has 32.6 GB of memory out of 128 GB.

1. SNES9x doesn't work anymore. It crashes now. Before, it works.

2. ZSNES runs on XP only. I guess.

3. Lunar Magic works fine with me.

So, one question, HOW THE HECK AND WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?
Super Bump!

Anyways, Vista has a problem where it uses up much more RAM than it should, especially as it gets older. For instance, a friend of mine had Vista and it "idles" as it were with 4 gigs of RAM in use. That would cause slowdown for any application, but SNES emulators are actually fairly intense programs resource wise.
Anything not from Vista + Vista = Some kind of problem, though, ZSNES and SNEX9x run fine for me.
