Mario and the 5 Golden Eggs

Standard

Generic title I know, but trust me, this hack is unique. Interesting fact, after this hack I'm taking a couple months off of hacking to focus on irl stuff. I'd rather not get anymore into that. The plot is pretty simple, 5 golden Yoshi eggs were captured and hidden on the islands Mario is visiting. And I don't mean gold egg as in the gold egg you rescue after you beat a caste, I mean randomly hidden in levels there are Yoshi blocks with gold colored Yoshis you need to rescue. Gaining this Yoshi is the only way to access the secret exit in that level. So every time you see a red level, look for a gold Yoshi. After the secret exit is found a path starts to build on a seperate island on the OW. So, here's some screens and videos.

Level 1.

Level 2

Level 3

Level 4:

Down there is a Yoshi only access point, for the secret exit of course.

Now we can enter the area.

Level 5:

Hm, what's down there?

Hm, there is blockage in this passage

We must backtrack to the underground lands to find a way to pass.

Level 6 (WIP) :

Some videos:

Now for a fun fact. Those sky gradients you see are NOT HDMA sky gradients. They are VANILLA sky gradients. How is this possible you ask? Simple map16/palette work my friend.

I think this picture best explains it. (kinda big)

Using default map16 tiles, I make tiles with pure colors on them. Two colors for each tile. Considering palette 1 isn't used 90% of the time, I make a gradient with that palette in the palette editor. Then of course, paste it to the top of the BG. Along with one tile that is a solid color, being the rest of the sky. Again, the picture explains it better than I can.
So for some what of an extra treat, check out these Lunar Magic screenies.

Level 1's BG

Level 2's BG

Level 3's BG (This one is my favorite ^^)

Thanks for your time. All comments are appreciated. :D
Wow... this looks really good Zildjian. I love the entire hack gimmick of finding the yoshi's within the levels as opposed to just simply saving the egg after each castle. Definitely not the standard gimmick of a hack.

The screenies look really nice. The vanilla fake HDMA gradient looks incredible. A nice, and much needed touch to the original backgrounds, as it adds more flavour to the old SMW system.

Nice job, Zildjian!

Your idea looks nice, but you should change the background of the second level, becuase it's the same backgrond from the first level but with different colors.
I've been seeing some of this work lately and it looks really great! I like the look of this so far, can't wait to see more!
Oh yes, this is what I've been waiting for. I can't wait to play this.
The thing that I love the most about all this is the palettes. The only palette I can possibly complain about is the arch-ledges. They need to be a bit paler.
Some of the greatest palettes I have ever seen on the site.
The backgrounds a re a huge plus too. The gradient that is completely vanilla. I am quite amazed to see how that actually works.

Also, how long will this hack be?

Heh, I figured that's what you did after I saw your palettes in the showoff thread.

Great stuff!
Thanks for the comments guys! As for the length Kristian, I was planning on making it 20 levels long. But that is subjective as of now, so I don't know for sure.
The gradients look cool and so do the levels.

However, in Moleville, at 56 seconds into the vid is a potential stuck-forever spot. The nearest Monty Mole also 'lands' in the middle of its ledge. I found no other problems in that level, so good job so far!

You hear dice being thrown...

Thanks for the comments everybody! Here's some screen shots from the next level, which is still un-named. It is the first level to have a golden Yoshi in it so I thought I'd show. I still have yet to find a secret place to hide the Yoshi, so these pictures with him in it are in the beginning of the level.

comments?
That design style is pretty cool Zildjian. The levels look much nicer having the added layer of foreground. It adds a greater amount of appeal as opposed to a single layer of foreground, in my opinion anyways. Also another nice background gradient, it perfectly suits the level.

This looks like one of the best vanilla hacks I've ever seen so far. I really your design Zildjian. The delicious palettes and vanilla gradients are wonderful was well, kudos!

Btw if you need beta testers, be sure to let me know, I'll definitely help out.

Maybe the level could be something like "Pipe Playground" "Pipe Plains" or "Tube Terrace" since it looks like you're decorating the area with pipes.

Once again, the palette is very nice.
The thing that really caught my eye in these screenshots was the 'clutter' in the ground... It's such a cool way to make vanilla levels more detailed.
Oh, and the Golden Yoshi's palette is nice too.

I agree, great palette.
Your layout has been removed.
Finished the level, more screens.

I called the level green grove btw, so comments?

Looking good. Liking Golden Yoshi.

Also lol lincolned in last screenshot by shell.

This hack is looking very nice. Out of all the vanilla hacks I've seen, this one definitely appears to be one of the best. You surely work well with the just the original SMW assets.

Also...

Golden Yoshi = A+ =)

He's quite the popular character nowadays. ^_^
I just had a random urge to make this

LONGCAT BOSS.

However this boss will be put in a different level than is shown in the video. I'm actually not 100% sure I should keep it, considering it's the most chocolate thing in this hack. So I ask you, should longcat stay? If so he will be put in a separate world.
That is... Very interesting. I'd say to keep it, even though it seems a bit out of place in a mostly vanilla hack.

... Or at least put the jumping fish upsidedown moons. =P
Good fucking bye.
You sure love your memes, Zild. :D

Anyway, the boss is looking cool. I hope you'll be including more Easter Eggs into your hack other than this one which you've already revealed. :P
