Varndts Castle

Hey everybody. Do you remember my last hack? Yes? Well then, please forget it, it was actually a piece of s*** and didn't even have a story.
It was basically just what I did while playing around with ExGFX and the likes.
Now enough of that, I have actually started something brand-new:

Yes, its called "Varndts Castle". Here is the storyline:

"Bowser is defeated once again, the princess is rescued. Mario is on his way home when he suddenly sees a strange castle. Who could be the owner? Did Mario miss one of Bowsers minions? Curious as always Mario approaches the castle."

I had a video of the beginning of my hack but I changed some stuff and now it is outdatet.

EDIT: The mouse is actually the cursor sprite and you can move and click stuff with it.

Thats it for now, maybe I'll record some vids later.

Looks pretty good so far and I LOLed at the Blue screen of death. Keep up the good work.
I guess this hack doesn't take itself too seriously...

This looks like a good hack, though the custom ExGFX for the map is knd of meh.

Yeah, nobody claimed my request and so I decided to try it myself... not a good idea but better than nothing I guesss... >.<
And no, I can't seem to resist integrating some small jokes and gimmicks.

Misc stuff:

I had to shorten the upwards section drastically, it used to have nearly the double length.

I'll improve the minibosses difficulty maybe by adding lava or more enemies.

KNOWN ISSUES: Don't complain about these, I already know

- I used one single rewind. I'm so sorry but I didn't want to record the whole thing again.

- When I did the upwards level the second time there was background garbage at the end. This is something I've been dealing with the last few days but now I have already solved the problem.

- There is a minimal sprite lag but its very small. Its those fire bros and fire bars fault.

Nothing more to say. What do you think?

I think there are some issues worth mentioning but I can't think of them right now. I will edit the description later.
hmmm. in Game 3, you should stick to the same music for the whole time.
Yeah, forgot to mention that.
When I stick to the same music it plays the level end music after teleporting and that is kind of annoying. The only way to avoid that seems to be switching between two songs =(

You should find a way to fix it, its a bit annoying.
Finally I can show you the second part of the red level (the first part is somewhere up this thread). I was really lazy the last few weeks...

Not bad, but there are a few problems:
1. In the first room, at the top there is some background garbage.
2. the red palette looks like the wrong way round on some blocks, its dark where it should be light and vice versa
3. the song loops too early, what addmusic are you using, that may be the problem?

Also, why is Mario invisible? It looks extremely frustrating.
Your layout has been removed.
I believe the BG trash is a result of BG scrolling in a vertical level, causing the BG to scroll to an invalid area (which is why Nintendo set Layer 2 Vertical scrolling to None in these levels).

Also, if the level can be re-entered, the Red Switch will not be there, causing the player to be stuck forever. You should place a ? sphere in the room to prevent this.

Other than that and what Tornado said, that was a good level.

One question: Is the double-jump only available in that level, or could you take it?

It actually isn't background garbage but the very bottom row of the BG.
And no, the doublejump can't be taken or else you would have four different powerups after finishing all four doors. That would be pretty much totally overpowered.
May I request some screenshots for people that don't like to watch videos often?
