  • To put it simply, state what you prefer and why. I ask this because it seems alot of people have turned to 100% 3d.

i prefer 2D games over 3D games because 2D games tend to be alot more straight foward then 3d games. in most 3D games there is alot more backtracking then moving foward, in 2D games, you beat a level and move on. you dont go the whole way to the end then back to the beginning because you missed something. you get to the end and you start kicking some boss ASS. Also, i tend to find the extremely detailed graphics boring. i like the colorfull SNES games like super mario world, contra 3, earthworm jim, and so forth. and also not only that, now games are on discs. Most of the 2d games are on cartridges. so if you get a scuff on it, its not gonna matter. unlike discs, where if you get a scuff on it it ceases to work.

So, thats why i like 2D games better then 3D.

now, what do you guys prefer?

(btw this snow on the pages is killing me, it took a half hour to type this little bit.)

I do like 3D games but I like 2D games better.
I prefer 3D games because you can better explore the world the character is in. For example, Legend of Zelda OoT, or Twilight Princess. They are pretty awesome games with a good storyline.

For me, 2D games don't have much storyline. 2D games are the games that you play over and over because they are fun.

3D games, I play over and over for something like, get every item, sequence break. And stuff like that.

I don't know, every flaw I can come up with for 2D, I am sure there is a great counterexample to...

One of the biggest issues I see with 3D games is the camera. Far too many of them offer a lousy one that overall does a poor job capturing the action and can easily trip you up. What's more, with a lot of 3D games, while the scope itself can feel huge and atmospheric, it can also seem empty and force a heavy amount of backtracking and going through long sections by foot.

While there are some exceptions, I prefer 2D games overall. This way, the developers can focus on pure fun in the gameplay itself. This also means that, most of the time, pixel art is designed as well, which often looks more impressive overall from an artistic standpoint.
I prefer exploration based games in 3D and linear games in 2D.
I prefer 3D games since they're non-linear and innovative. They're usually more interesting to me and have a better storyline, better music and better gameplay overall.
Apples to oranges. Neither's inherently better than the other, just a design choice.

You wouldn't say games with an anime art style are better than games with a realistic art style because "they're usually more interesting and have a better storyline, better music and better gameplay overall." I certainly couldn't (or the other way around either) with a straight face .
^ this. Whether the game is 2D or 3D, doesn't really matter to me. I like both exploring worlds (usually more present in 3D) and fun, albeit slightly straight-forward gameplay (usually more present in 2D).
I don't think storyline necessarily has to be affected by whether it's 2D or 3D. At least not for me. Same goes for music - that's just because SNES has less quality than, for example, PS2.

Coincidentally, most of my favourite games are 2D, but that's maybe because of the games I grew up with.
When I think of video games, I can usually relate to the ones I played/liked most, and those are mainly 2D.
A few exceptions: Super Mario 64, Poy Poy (don't think anyone knows that one), Mario Kart : Double Dash and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Also, I don't count SNES games that resemble a 3D environment, but (in my opinion) still are 2D. (I'm thinking of Pilotwings, Super Mario Kart and Star Fox here.)
--------> Don't follow "Find Roy's Dignity", my hack. Because it's pretty outdated. <--------
    I prefer...
    2.5D! It's both 2D and 3D
    You're like the P in Psycho...tottaly useless!
I really don't have a preference. It depends entirely on the game.

If I really had to pick, though, I'd pick a 3D game. There's just more to explore, I guess.

Did you know brawl is 2d? Also there are a few 3d games that were okay, but the cameras still need work.

newsmbwii, brawl: two dimensional. 2d does tend to out do 3d.

How is brawl 2d if when you press the start button you can swap angles and see different parts of the character from different angles?

As for me. 2d or 3d doesn't matter. It's all about gameplay for me. If I'd have to chose a game between the 2, I'd pick paper mario.

Well, most people consider 3D games as being able to walk in a complete circle. like halo, metroid prime, etc. Brawl is just left and right, and that IS kind of 2D. but i see what you're getting at.

I prefer 3D over 2D because it's not just the background and the gameplay, it's the experience as a character.
Your layout has been removed...NOT! :D

It's a bit of both. During a fight, it is 2D because you can only go left, right, up, and down, and that doesn't change regardless of the viewing angle. But the graphics are 3D and if you pause the game, you can do that "swapping angles" thing.

I like games that are 2D in design. If the graphics look 3D, like the Donkey Kong Country series or Brawl, then that's even better.
Personally, I like 2D games a lot more, somewhat because of their simplicity.
Currently working on a website that lists Minecraft Servers... if you have any suggestions for my Minecraft server list, let me know.
3D games tend to be more spread out and consequently require you to wander around aimlessly and get lost easily.
2D games are more close-quartered and easier to keep track of your position.

I'm not too fond of 3D games that require extensive exploration, though I don't mind if it's in 2D games (Pokemon games, Mother series, etc). That's just a personal preference of mine.

Aside from that, it doesn't really make a difference to me if it's 2D or 3D.
i prefer 3d games because more of them tend to be nonlinear compared to 2d games. also it gives you a chance to explore the world. and in 3d games there can be a lot of secret places to find like in banjo kazooie.
