Bowser Strikes Back (New level)

Awesome. I've been waiting for updates on this, and it's nice to progress on this.

First screenshot looks a bit linear and the pipe looks cut-off at the bottom, though I really can't judge the whole level from just that since its probably part of a puzzle. Love that layer 3 image from YI in your 2nd screenshot though, it looks really nice and fits well with the rest of the level.

Those submaps look great too, especially the starry gradient in the 2nd screenshot. My only complaint would be that the level tiles are a bit off-centered, but that's just being nitpicky.

Flower Tower looks great too, I like the dark atmosphere of it and the puzzles involved in it. You're doing a good job when it comes to puzzles in your hack.

And that's a really nice...wait I shouldn't spoil it :P

Wow. Jimmy, I've been "following" this hack for quite a while on IRC and I played your original demo, and I must say, this hack is really shaping up to be quite amazing. Everything looks extremely polished with the YI GFX, Layer 3's and HDMA, and I'm loving the YI samples and custom music. Looking great, keep up the good work!

Yeah, I have been in love with this hack as well since you released the first demo; despite having some small errors here and there, I found the levels in it to be just great.

As for the actual updates... as I said on IRC, these Layer 3 images you were able to whip up are very spiffy - they, along with those gradient HDMA effects you inserted there, sure make your hack look more like YI than SMW itself. I will have to jump onto the bandwagon and agree that the pipe in the first screen looks kind of cut-off in collision to the cloud, though... but, eh, no need to worry, as this is pretty much my only nitpick. ;)

About those two submaps, they both look very well-made overall. I especially like that stunning HDMA effect in the first submap... it really does spoil that that sky-themed world is possibly going to have a somewhat darker atmosphere than most of the sky worlds I've seen in other SMW hacks.

The "Flower Tower" level looks really well-designed when it comes to puzzles, and as I said in the screenshots thread, the song you cooked up to go with it is just mind-blowing due to it being extremely catchy.

As for that SPC... the beginning of it sort of reminds me of something out of Keytastrophe... is it meant to actually sound like that? Probably, I guess... I reckon I'm just missing some sort of minor joke or something.

The first screenshot. Not really much to comment on, other than the graphical choices are good, and the pipe kind of cutsoff the cloud. Not really anything you can do about it, unless you tweaked the pipes in YY-CHR to be completely square.

Second Screenshot - Once again, nothing much to say about it. The graphics are good, and the layer 3 looks very, very nice. Both screens kind of lack sprites, though.

The two overworlds I've already commented on in the SS+Video thread, and my comments were something along the lines of 'amazing', 'fantastic', 'best submaps I've ever seen'.

I'll leave the video for sake of too many spoilers. Very nice work, though Jimmy. This thread is one of the dustiest ones on the site, though. I recommend using it more often. ;)

Heh. Funny that you thought it reminded you of Keytastrophe, when this is in fact a remix of one of Keytastrophe's songs. As for which one...well...that's for you to guess. ;)

Anyways, I have a couple of small updates on the two submaps I have just shown:

Fixed the gradient a bit so that it looks a bit more smooth, and changed some other things as well.


Fixed the palette of the mud so that it doesn't look so awkward anymore. Also, if you think these submaps look good now, just wait until you see them in-game. I plan on adding some little gimmicks to these two. ;)

This hack is looking awesome... I think the graphics are the best part. You make clever use of Yoshi's Island graphics in a fresh way. Keep it up!

(It seems like staff members always make the best hacks, what with Bonni's Quest, this, and Keytastrophe.)

Hack Moderators may not get all the priveledges of other staff members, they should still be comsidered a part of the staff. After all, they're helping out with one of the biggest parts of the site: hacks!
Guys guys, let's not let this thread turn into a debate on whether or not Hack Moderators are staff members.

Also GoldenSonic, I feel that I should point out that SMW2+3 was, in fact, made by a staff member. Steven used to be on the staff team quite a while ago.

I don't think being a staff member has anything to do with the quality of their hacks, though. I know quite a few people who aren't part of the staff team, but are working on some pretty amazing hacks right now.

Oh wow, this looks really nice. That Flower Tower level looks really great...I like the design, and the idea is creative. Those submaps look really great: they look fantastic and make me wonder what the worlds are going to be like. I have a complaint though: the outlines are inconsistent in the forest submap! D: (some are two pixels, others are one) The screenshot of the Flower Tower level looks great...I'm kinda so-so on the 3D and 2D graphics unless the ceilings all work the same way (having tile of empty area on the bottom with priority on and then a solid area) though.

All in all, nice work, and I look forward to seeing more of this. :O

The new screen shot looks alright but the graphics look a tad awkward imo, because the foreground is 3Dish, while the background is completely 2D. Same with the blocks going that are blocking the passage downward. They look a little bit off because they are also completely 2D.
Not that you can really do anything about it...

Other than that, the palettes are good, and what I can see of the level looks good too.

Here's another small little update of my hack. I made an ASM hack that allows Mario to carry up to six items at once. This also shows my shop level that I posted a screenshot of a few pages back. You can buy certain items depending on how many power stars (exits) that you have collected. Enjoy.

I'd say that the end result is something absolutely incredible.

I know that the video isn't meant for it, but man the graphics/music fits well for the shop.
