Serious animes

Lately I've watched a few intros for animes to see if I could find a good one. Really, I like more serious animes. I watched the intro for lucky star and it made me shudder.

I'm looking for something a little more mature. Shojo anime just seems to bore me.

Anyone have any good suggestions?
Well, I recommend my favourite Anime "Eureka Seven". At first it doesn't really look like a serious Anime. In fact when you see the first few episodes you might even think it was a Shounen, since it has a lot of comedy and a typical Shounen story with a little loser trying to impress a girl and getting better each episode. The Anime totally changes after about 10 episodes, though, and gets to serious topics like religion, different races, the military, our planet and what not. It still has comedy moments every now and then, but they're always really fitting and don't overshadow the real theme of the Anime.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
I'm gonna have to say Death Note. It's animated, of course, but it's also got a pretty deep and mature storyline and could be right up your alley.

Yeah, my brother told me a little about it. He said that from he'd seen of what I like, I probably wouldn't like it though. :/

Anyway, I heard that Kenshin and Cowboy Bebop were good. Any opinions on those?

It got pretty boring around the last parts, and the ending was really obvious.
Yes, Death Note wasn't bad, but as Winter-Fox said there are really boring parts and I wasn't really satisfied with the ending. Nevertheless it's an Anime you'll have to watch at least once.

Read the manga called MARS if you want an excellent romance drama with mystery as well.
Can't recommend this manga enough to those wanting a serious story, yet nobody I know reads it.

It starts off immature and slightly cutesy, but for a reason. This story delves into some serious issues with everything having reasons for everything, along with a very psychological and deep plot. This is probably one of the best mangas I've ever read.
As a basic outline, the plot revolves around Rei, who's twin brother committed suicide and how he coped with it since then, as well as a girl named Kira who is socially withdrawn and single parented, with the plot surrounding the two as they learned more and more about each others backstories and problems and tackle them.

Other themes delve into the psychology of the twisted and mentally ill, as well as rape, and suicide.

As the story unfolds, the story strings together so brilliantly, and every possible plot hole, even the personalities of characters, is filled.
It's also a very psychological book and a violent one while I'm at it. Don't expect giant swords or gang fights here, but the shock what could happen on the street.

Do note that while this is not an erotic manga in any way, things still become a little mature (Sexually and non sexually) later on and I would not recommend this manga to anyone who would be offended by such content. I would give this a 16+ age rating, not just because it gets a little mature, but because you yourself must be mature to appreciate and understand the story

Also, I'm going to recommend Saikano as well if you want a truly serious story.
Quote
The story begins with Shuji, a high school student in a Hokkaid; coastal city, walking up to an observatory and reminiscing about his girlfriend, Chise; there he finds her exchange diaries that she purposefully left behind. The ensuing story is narrated by Shuji through flashbacks while reading Chise's diary. Chise, a fellow student in his class, declares her love for Shuji at the beginning of the series. However, Chise is very shy and Shuji is insensitive: neither know how to express their feelings very well, but they do indeed have feelings for each other.

One day, while Shuji is shopping in Sapporo, unknown bombers attack the city in broad daylight. He and his friends run for cover, but notice a fast and small flying object shooting down the enemy bombers. Separated from his friends, Shuji wanders through the wreckage - only to stumble upon Chise; here she has metal wings and weapons - apparently grafted onto her body. She tells him she has become the ultimate weapon, without her knowledge or consent, and that she is seen by the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) as the last hope for defending Japan from imminent invasion.

I'm gonna point out Serial Experiments Lain again.

It is not serious on the first glance. In fact, you could totally overlook it if you didn't think about it. Many parts that may seem insignificant are actually large parts of analyzing the anime. Something as small as the shadows can hint or tell you something that is about to happen.

The plot can't be explained. Most of the time, it seems like there is no plot at all!

The anime is a real mind trip but it is really good. It an anime you have to watch twice. Watch once for the visuals and the basic events. Watch a second time to analyze and put together their meanings. Don't get turned off by how weird it is. Its something you have to watch at least once.

All of these sound interesting.

My brother, a shounen anime fan, suggested an anime called heroic age. It looks pretty cool right now. I think I might check it out.
I just finished watching Spice and Wolf the other night, and it was pretty enjoyable for me, although some people make get bored by it. The plot is more focused on economics/trading, as well as a relationship between the two main characters (one of which is currently in my profile <3). If you're up for actually having to pay attention, give it a go. It's only 25 episodes long right now, but based on the end, I imagine they'll be making a third season.

Elfen Lied seems to be really good too, based off of what I've watched so far (5 out of 13 episodes). If it isn't serious, and .. gory as hell .. then I don't know what is.

GOLDEN. Death Note is seriously amazing.
Along the same lines but a bit less serious is Code Geass, which also has a compelling storyline and amazing twists that have you on the edge of your seat.

Kenshin is another one of my favorites. After the Shishio battle it becomes repetitive and filler-y, so you can kinda ditch it after that. Bebop is also pretty good. Trigun is lighter, but a very fun watch as well.

From there it depends how shounen you want to go. Fate/Stay Night was amazing in my opinion. Spice and Wolf was mentioned, which is not always serious but was enjoyable to me anyway.

D.N. Angel is an older one, but it is a serious romance and excellently executed. You should definitely give that a look if you're into the romance.

*GASP* if you need anymore suggestions, you could give me more insight into your taste and I would be glad to help :D
If you'd like to see my work, go ahead and clicky. Hasn't been updated in a looong time...
If you want a serious anime dealing with some-what related real-life problems such as trying to save somebody from killing themselves, or stopping someone from dissappearing from reality, trying to help someone overcome a depression, or even helping somebody fight demons meterialized by a long belief. Then I suggest you watch "Kanon 2006". It is definitely a lot better than what I described, but it is a very serious anime and has a decent amount of moments that'll drive you into tears. It has comedy every now and then, but after the 5th episode, you'll just fall in love with it. You can find an English dub of it at Megavideo.com.

An OFFICIAL Review about "Kanon 2006"
When I say 2006 at the end, it is b/c Kanon was originally made in 2002, but it was remade in 2006 with much better visuals and twice the episode length of the original.
