TLMB's and Sonikku's Big Secret

So, I still don't have a demo, but I have the next best thing. My goal has always been to make something completely different from all existing Mario hacks. One thing in particular that I've always wanted to do was what everyone called impossible...

All hacks so far either have just one playable character, or if you choose two-player mode, they alternate. But where's the fun in that? You already know I somewhat circumvented this by introducing Lucian, but I wanted to go a little further.

So I looked around at a few other games to see how they did it. And a certain series caught my eye. The series that used to be competing with Mario...

I looked at how they did it, and then it hit me. That game also had two main characters, but the way it was handled was much different.

So I decided to copy them.

If you still don't know what I mean, then let me spell it out for you...

TWO PLAYER CO-OP!

First, I would love to say how awesome it is that three people accomplished this without the other knowing. Yes, Me and Sonikku have also created this same exact thing for C3, however it isn't like Azure's sprite. First off, his is completed where ours still has it's bugs (like trying to get the darn thing to accelerate properly or having it jump when running to the right. But a nice difference is that this sprite could be used for the normal SMW where as Azure's was specially designed for his hack.

Ours has some interaction with sprites (mainly the ones that use default interaction with mario) and can eat power-ups to take that extra hit (eventually be able to throw fireballs when interacting with a flower or double jumping with a cape). Our might not be able to carry sprites like the key or a shell, but it can kick them around to get them to Mario. Another thing the sprite can climb vines to get around but cannot stay in one place (you must either be holding the up or down button for it to stay there). However, block interaction doesn't sound to easy to implement, but we will try to get something done.

Unfortunately, there is no release as it is still very beta and we need to program interaction with various things.

Early form of the sprite

People I'd like to give a shout out to for this Sprite:
1) Sonikku - Without him, this sprite would not be where it is today
2) Psuedonym - Without him, there would be no sprite
3) Dispari_Scurio - She was the First person to ever help me with this idea I had
4) Jimmy & Kyoseron - Why I mention you guys both at the same time is because of the hilarious comments I received when you guys first saw the video.

If you guys are lucky, I might be able to finish a teaser level for you to netplay with (assuming it works over netplay).

Comments? Criticism?

EDIT: This thread was dedicated to Smallhacker who told me about four years ago that this was impossible. You've been proven wrong 3 times this weekend <3
I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
Ha ha, first! Also, this is an awesome idea.
God, i've been waiting for something like this for a long time.

EDIT: Dammit. I was ninja'd.
Oh what!? Holy shit-aki mushrooms.

...I hate it that you gusy will probably get less comments because Azure posted first.
Astounding, though. You guys are tops!

Yeah! :Damn it all to hell!

Aaaanyways, yeah. This is the 3rd co-op project I've seen, and this one I'd really LOVE to make a vanilla hack of Mario and Luigi cooperating. <3

I can't wait 'til this is done. Good luck you two! :)
Biggest hacking coincidence ever. I actually think this one is better than Azure's. Why? because you can actually swap controls. Azure's is really just a sprite following you, well kind of. Still pretty great.

I can foresee this new Player 2 sprite for use in many puzzles involving P Switch blocks, On/off blocks, etc. etc. etc.

you can switch controls with the select key. However, this is pretty good too. Maybe Azure could help you with some of your problems.
That is an absolute and strange coincidence that this happened. Regardless this is pretty cool it's nice that the sprite has most of the abilities of Mario but not all of them. Thus making the sprite a helping sprite as it should be in a two-player co-op.

You guys worked really hard on this for a long time, and I'm impressed that you made it this far and didn't give up.

I like the little falling sound it makes when the second player dies, so it's not weird when he doesn't go up a bit before falling like Mario does. Good luck fixing those weird movement bugs and making it interact with stuff. He already interacts with a few important things quite well as demonstrated in the video.

One thing I can think of to suggest if you are taking suggestions, and I don't know how out of the question this would be, would be a visible HP count for this second player if there are no other hints to how much health your character has like there is with Mario (e.g. size and palette); it would be an outright amazing addition to an already amazing feature.

Keep going, guys. =D

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
We've been working on this for awhile, but some things are still somewhat buggy, maybe not as well-made as Azure's, but ours was intended for SMW especially, I mainly tried to code the sprite interactions and such (But haven't implemented all of them yet). As it is right now, TLMB told me that interaction with solid-sprite platforms doesn't work (Though it did for me in an earlier version), but as it was, its still one of the largest projects I have been a part of.

It was complicated to set up everything to it's current state, but even though, it still seems somewhat presentable in its current state, haha.

Right now, it also can interact with powerups, setting $C2,x, meaning if it gets hit during the time $C2,x isn't zero, it only flies up a bit. It also can collect coin sprites and such.

I'm working on that as we speak.
