General Mario Games Thread

The other thread was dead, and I didn't want to bump, so...

The game will be released on November 15th.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is pretty awesome-looking. As most of you may know, it will have a 4-player co-op mode and include the new "Super Guide" feature (aka demo play/kind code). It will also feature multiplayer modes such as Coin Battle and Free-for-all.

Another new thing will be the "Toad rescue missions". Where you go on a level you already visited, find a toad and take him to the ending of the level.

As for Super Guide, it will only activate once you fail in a level 8 times, and it's completely optional. If you activate it, you can resume play any moment as the game plays itself through the level. And it will not show shortcuts and secrets in levels.

The game will have 8 worlds, as usual. And thanks to the Super Guide, it will have much more difficult levels than NSMB on the DS (according to some sources).

The worlds are set in the same layout from NSMB, a few levels, tower, few more levels, castle, with Toad houses and hammer bros. Not sure about the world themes, though, probly the same as the ones from NSMB DS.

Thats all I know, so far. What I'd like to know is if it would have DLC, support for classic controller, now that they added SMW stuff, and connection with the DS version somehow.

Also, no wi-fi. But there IS Yoshi and some SMW gameplay in it (spin jump, berries...) for all you SMW hackers. :P

So yeah, discuss about the game and what not.
I hope they put some sort of unlockable stuff int it. Like, a secret ninth world. That would be great. Better than having three stars next to your file, at least.

I like the fact that it's going to be harder levels. The thought that passing a level without any help from a pseudo guide is nearly unthinkable though.

Though the spinjump is an interesting thought. Would they use it to do things like most of us hackers do, which is mostly, jump on invincible enemies?

I wonder if they'll have switch in the game, like in super mario 64.

I mean, remember those beta screeshots from NSMB? When the game wasn't even out? There was a screenshot of Mario and Luigi swinging while holding to ropes, as well was a walking thwomp and a blue block which looked like a blue switch block.

Now that I think about it, it's really disappointing they didn't put such things in the actual game...

There are a couple other things worthy of mentioning.

-Bowser Jr. has been confirmed along with the rest of the Koopalings.
-From what I hear, there will be a few levels specially designed for multiplayer mode. These are likely similar to the ones from NSMB.
-A few other levels have been mentioned. One is a desert level in which the player(s) have to ride an elevator to the top of the area while being assaulted by Koopas. Sounds aufully similar to NSMB's world 5-tower.
-There's another level in which the players ride a raft that measures weight. If the number gets too high, the raft begins to sink, which is bad, considering it's floating on poison water. Enemies count for weight as well, not just players.
-Finally, there's a level in world 8 that features a roller coaster made out of bones. The coaster occasionally dips into lava, forcing players to find other platforms to stay on temporarily.
-The short pause that occurs when a player dies has been removed, thankfully.

Also, although it hasn't really been confirmed, it's obvious that the wold themes are going to remain the same as they were in NSMB. World 2-5 is the desert geyser level. World 5-1 is the icy penguin level. World 6-6 is the flashlight raft level, though it starts out outside, where mountains can clearly be seen. World 7-1 is the swaying/turning platform sky level. If all these worlds have the same NSMB themes, than chances are the rest will, too.

(Personally I haven't heard something of most of them, so I would like to know where you found them :)

Anyway, I can't wait to the release of this game.

I had already seen the boxart. I hope this New Super Mario Bros Wii is more of a challenge than the DS NSMB.

The guide sorta reminds me of Fatal Rewind, where you would be shown a replay after you died and could speed up to where you wanted to take control, and then finish the level. Too bad the game's so hard...
Sigh, I wonder if I'm the only one not looking forward to this game...

I mean, NSMB had been a disappointment to me. I honestly have no desire to go through another bland, linear, and repetitive Mario platformer. It feels like the designers aren't being creative, and well...I'm rambling too much; after all, I surely haven't played the game, so how could I know?

Either way, I really think Nintendo needs to be more creative and challenging in this game; they have really seemed to drop off in the 2-D section since SMW (or YI, if you count that), and I'm not just talking about the quantity, but the quality has a lot more to be desired.

Oh well, I'll end up renting it, so here's to hoping it'll be everything I hope it to be.

What about the sma4 e reader levels? Those were pretty creative. Anyways, I'm definitely looking forward to this.

Your layout has been removed.

We should write letters to Nintendo, telling them we want a decent level editor in their next major platformer. It would make for excellent replay value.

You're posting on a site dedicated to an advanced, fully functional, widely-renowned level editor that's capable of extracting and inserting graphics, creating new animations, editing map16 data, and basically creating an almost entirely new game, not to mention the myriad of downloadable, user-made hacks, and you're asking for one that is probably a lot simpler, more restricted, and probably incapable of half the things this one can do?

Besides, I've seen how complex some of these NSMB Wii levels are, and finding ways to allow players to conveniently manipulate the complicated aspects of these levels would be very difficult, to say the least.

But the wii can handle mor than 5 sprites on screen. It can handle 6, 7, maybe 8, for games that push the Wii's amazing engine.

I don't know if this is is old news or not, but Here's an article about the difficulty in this game.
