Braces. Oh man.

I knew they were coming, and here they are. I got them yesterday, and they hurt like heck. I am getting used to them, but they suck. I want to know what you people think of braces.
When you use binary as a level, nobody knows what level you are! *laughs manically*

I've had braces since April 16th, 2008, and I have to say they're not that bad. The first week of having them on was agony, I couldn't have the top row of teeth touching the bottom because it send sharp pains throughout my mouth, but it did give me a good excuse not to participate in Sport (this was at the time I couldn't be bothered running around my school oval). Trust me, you'll get used to them soon, they won't hurt after a while, and when the pain stops, you won't even be able to feel them. Other than the occasional annyoing ulcer they cause and cuts on your tongue (it becomes a habit to play with them) they're not all bad.

Of course, I'm absolutely ecstatic that I'm getting them off in December/January, they suck so damn much I want to rip them out of my mouth.

Hypocrisy ftw.
I've had them, and I've already got them off after, like, two years.

They do suck when you first get them, but believe me, they aren't that bad after you have them on for a bit.

I actually just got my braces off yesterday. They really weren't that bad at all, not nearly as bad as other people say. You'll get used to them.

I'm sure I could use braces. People in my family suggested it. But if I don't really need them then I don't want them. I'm afraid that I would get food stuck around them a lot if I was to get them...
I had them back in second grade, I don't remember much of my braces, but the pain will go away and you'll get used to them.

Taking a small break
They're a pain at first, but you'll start to get used to them after a few weeks. The only thing that was annoying for me was when:

-the ends of the wires slice your gums (make sure you force your orthodontist to cut the ends well)
-certain foods pop the brackets off.

To be honest, the retainer you're forced to wear after you get your braces off is probably worse than the braces themselves.
I had to wear them for 5 years. :|

Honestly though, you forget they're there after a short time, and your mouth adjusts to the fact they're there. Eating becomes normal again and life continues.
When I was really young, I wanted braces because I liked that I could get different colors of elastics. Now, of course, I know that getting braces is just silly, in my case, because my teeth are well enough aligned that an orthodontist can't make me or my parents believe they aren't, in order to make me wear them. I went to an orthodontist, and his stammering was just hilarious, I was having trouble holding in my laughter at his idiotic reasoning until I got back into my car and drove home. "You- you'll be sorry when everyone's teeth are better than yours!" Good times.

Anyway, there are a lot of people in my class with braces - almost half of us, in fact - and some people's braces I honestly don't even notice, but others make it really obvious that they have them. It's weird, because the people who're more talkative are the ones whose braces I barely notice, and the people who only say what they need to are the ones who just seem to always have them shining at people, blinding them with their awesome magnetic lasers.

Yeah, there was a kid in my school last year who had a retainer, and he would just talk like he was holding back a gallon of saliva in his throat. I feel sorry for the kid, but he's done with that retainer now, so it's all good.

It's funny. That's what a lot of people I know who had braces say...

Though, I don't know, I never really had a problem with it. I mean, sure, it hurts a LITTLE bit, but, meh. And they try and scare you with the 'If you don't wear it two nights in a row you ahve to get a new one! It costs 100$!'
Even though my friend lost his for a week, and didn't need a new one. (well other than having to get a new one because he lost it.)

Bottom line: I don't find braces OR the retainer that bad.

Oh wait, are we talking about the retainer on the back of your teeth? Because yeah, that's about the same as braces.

Ugh... I had braces for a year and a half, and got them removed a couple years ago. The tightening you had to do was awful, and I too experienced the issue with the ends cutting into your gums.

The real issue I have is the way my teeth grind a lot now after braces. They've had to put some special caps on my teeth because they've been worn down a lot, and I occasionally need to wear a mouth guard in addition to my retainer at night. Not fun.
Braces...Im going to have to get them next month. I've never had them, but I can tell they can give you alot of pain once in a bit. Im sure you will get through it :)

Good luck!
Finally decided to actully work on a hack. I haven't thought of a name for it yet, and I'm only done 45%.

Huh. I get my retainer in less than a week. How bad are they?

Not bad, Spade. It's just a small metal bar that fits along the back of your four teeth on the top and bottom.
It doesn't hurt or anything.
The one you where at night is basically a tight mouth guard, which hurts the first night you wear it, but after that it's not so bad.

They are a big pain at first then i got used to them, until...ZEEEREERREE...they attempt to remove them...bad idea. I looked like i just tried to eat nails, there was so much blood, and new cavities. So i get my retained, which my uncaring ortho just didnt trim down (its like invisalign, but its a retainer) so that dug into my gums, then after that we went to the dentist and he said that these were so cheap (but verrrrry expensive $75 dollars to replace) and he didnt let me use them till they were trimmed. Theyre trimmed down now, and now theyer great and are invisible. The retainers arent as bad as braces like S.N.N. says

they are not nearly as bad as the tightness of the first few weeks of braces. You gotta ask the ortho what type he uses though. If he gives you options, choose the clear plastic and remind them to trim it down, then its fine, although i think having them removed is the worst part.

I don't like them that much. You'll get used to them. Trust Me.

Ive had them for 2 years and am getting them off within the next 10 days.... Ha
I got them about a month or so ago. They are really annoying the first week. I remember I couldn't eat at all. So I just ate soft foods until I slowly learned how to bite again. This was probably because I have top AND bottom braces. But now it's like they aren't even there. :) I heard that when you get them off it feels like all your teeth are coming loose.
I've had them for almost the time you wear them. They hurt at first, but the good thing is you barely even notice them after the first week or so. It's annoying as hell when they put on those stupid chains, though, it feels like the first week again. At least the pain from them lasts less then that, though. AND HOPE TO GOD YOU DON'T NEED SPRINGS, THEY ARE THE WORST THINGS THAT CAN BE PUT INTO YOUR MOUTH EVER!
Good fucking bye.
Yeah, I agree with Zildjian, it does feel like they're coming apart, because your teeth "want to" go back to where they started at, but its not bad anymore, i still have to use retainers for a year, or they will come apart, and ill have to get braces AGAIN. IM NOT GONNA DO THAT!
Moral: Use your retainers as directed, unless you like braces (if you do youre a freak)
and to agree GoldenSonic15, springs do suck. They always kept ripping off my brackets, and ripping my cheek and gums open with infections, and eventually we had to pay BIG bucks for the replacements. (around $75) So if you do, the only things I recommend you eat are:
1 things after put them into a blender
2 mashed potatoes
3 rice
4 pudding
5 butter
6 mayo
7 mustard
8 horseraddish
9 ghost chili sauce
10 diarrhea (just kidding from 5 down)
