* NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island

Link Thread Closed

This is my YI-hack "NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island"!! Its difficulty level is "difficult" compared to the original.
The available demo here has got 5 of 6 worlds now (all of them include Extra-Levels!) and here I want to share this version of my Hack with you. It's an overworked version of the former one, because that contained some major bugs, which prevented the player from getting 100pts in some levels, but now everything should be fine:

NEW! Yoshi's Island - Demo v0. 95.IPS
3rd run. The first and second had some found bugs, which are fixed now. Extra 1's difficulty was increased.

It's nice to see there's a new YI hack out that isn't cancelled or frozen, I haven't played one of these in ages.

Anyway, overall I enjoyed the levels greatly. You seem to mix some design elements with puzzles quite well, which reminds me of Kamek's Revenge mixed with some SMW2+2. The cross sections are nicely done, and the palettes and layers you chose for your levels blended with eachother, which made the levels look appealing on top of being fun. But, like all hacks, people always have complaints.

  1. Lack of Stars and Eggs
This was especially annoying in 1-1, since I didn't have any prior eggs to shoot with front previous levels. Near the end of it I eventually ran out of eggs, since most enemies were unedible. I recommend adding some more enemies and clouds with stars. Just remember when making levels, always have about 5 or 10 extra starts available to collect, since the player is most likely to get hit at least once in the level and lose a chunk of their supply. Having somewhere near exactly 30 stars available in the level isn't a good idea.
  2. Working with the ground
When I mean working with the ground, I mean things like this. The ground beneath the cross section doesn't look too good. This is easily fixable by, instead of stretching the regular ground onto the other ground, creating two seperate pieces of ground, so it'll turn out something like this. Another example would be with the sand blocks in your welcome level, since the palette of the ground turns into a strange white colour because of the sand blocks.
  3. Item Memory
Item memory is affected when you place objects like red coins and flowers on top of eachother. I saw a couple of these in your hack and I recommend that you fix these so that they're not piled above one another. If you leave the screen which they're placed in, the sprite will disappear.

I might add more to this later. It might look like your hack is really buggy according to what this post contains, but really, I actually enjoy it quite a lot.
OK, I will work on it D:
I hate the disappearing sprites-bug!!!!!!!

Who doesn't. It's a nightmare if you're going for 100%.

The hack was good. I liked the palette combinations.Free counters!
Any screenshots? I can't download it now, but I wanna see.
Your layout has been removed.

I actually got 30 stars, last 2 by throwing an red egg at the last cloud, but still, Blumiere's right.

In 1-4, there's a missing part of a wall in one of the sections.
Thanks, MetaKnight, I've fixed the wall.
@All: Please tell me, where you urgently need stars/eggs. I will try to implement a few more egg blocks, 5-star-clouds, then!

Just finished it awhile ago. Here are my comments:

Like Blumiere said, sprite memory issue and ground needs fixing, so don't forget that.

There are some areas with weird camera scrolls, might want to fix that.

I don't know if its just me, but using too much multi/coloured blocks doesn't feel right. Up to you if you want to change some.

Level design needs improving here and there.

Good stuff you got here, I especially like how there wasn't much flat land in which I felt was good. Keep improving and this hack will shine. Good luck.
OK, thank you for your feedback.
I think I will easily replace the multi-colored blocks with grey ones =)
Sprite Memory issues should be fixed, and I added an egg block to 1-1 and some more stars here and there.

Oh no, I accidentally wrote my post wrong! D:

What I meant was, don't use too much multi coloured/grey blocks. Use a variety of objects, e.g stairs
Okay, made the levels a bit more stone-free.
But I have to say:
In some levels my hands are tied.
In some of them the "Ceiling with Slanted Edges" don't fit, so I HAVE to set the stone-blocks.

In the Cave of the ghosts level, there's a barely seen glitched tile in one of those sections.

Are you sure all stages can be completed with 100 pts.? Well, in 1-2, 2-2 and 1-8, you can't. In 1-1, I got 88 pts. and in 1-8 I got 97 pts.
Yep, I'm pretty sure you can.
I've tested them.
I could be that the bug I most hate, occured:
Sprites disappear.
In 1-2 you probably forgot the two red coins and one flower, which can be reached by entering a secret bonus area. You can reach the area by using a trampoline in one of the bushes.
In 1-8 you've probably missed three red coins, which are in a bonus-area, too.
It is VERY well-hidden. Use the blue arrow platform after the Torpedo-Guy-part. "Eat" the platform and transport it to the right wall from there. Use the bouncing arrow and jump to the left side. Then, shoot an egg towards the ceiling. A castle block will be destroyed. Then you can enter the bonus-area. You have to defeat two tap-taps. There is no pit in this room, so you have to use the hidden ? block with POW-function, which is hidden in one of the yellow blocks on the ceiling of the bonus-area. You have to search every corner for secrets in this hack!!!

Hey, well done Yoshis_fan, this looks like a great hack in the making.

Positives: nice graphics combinations, a lot of good creative ideas, overall good level design, not too easy (you should make sure the difficulty keeps increasing as the hack goes on however, imo, but then again I like hard hacks- am making a kaizo Y.I. myself). I particularly liked the snow level, the level with the fuzzies, the level with the boos and 1-8.

Negatives: I think level design in levels 1-1 up to 1-6 could be improved. It got a lot better after that. Also, I thought the train area in the last level on the hack was a bit boring, especially if you lose a life and have to go through it again to get all the red coins. Also, be careful about the disappearing sprites. This happens quite a lot, and imo you should sort it out even if it is at the expense of level design. One more thing, I don't mean any offence by this (only trying to help) but I'm guessing English isn't your first language? Because some level names, e.g. Paul the Pot's castle, sound a bit funny, so maybe you should think about changing those. Some are OK though.

I hope that was helpful.

A couple of questions: how do you get the flower in the level with the fuzzies, the one that is surrounded by blocks? Also, how did you manage to get a 3-up bubble? That was cool.

I look forward to playing the completed version.
Well, thanks for the feedback.
Some of your Negatives should be fixed in the latest (but not distributed) version of the hack.
To your questions:
You get the flower by eating a Fuzzy. The fart kills the flower.
I dunno how this 3-up bubble came. I actually wanted to make a one-up one.

He's called "Paul the Pot" because he's a renamed Roger the Potted Ghost, as far as I know.

Yeah I gathered that, it just sounds a bit strange to me, giving an object (i.e. a pot) a name. Paul the Potted Ghost would be fine lol.
There probably just wasn't enough room for that.
