I need help with my ancient gamepad.

Recently I've found my gamepad I've been looking for quite a while now. It is to be connected to a gameport, but my PC doesn't have any. Then I realized that I also had a gameport-to-USB connector. It came with the gamepad package. So I've connected this to an USB port. But the problem is: Windows XP doesn't want to recognize this gamepad for whatever reason.

The gamepad I am using is Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad

If these are related:
My OS is Windows XP professional
I am using Service Pack 3

I also don't remember if this thing had a driver or not. This gamepad worked perfectly on Windows ME. But it refuses to work here. So how can I make XP recognize (and use) this gamepad?

Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried adding the game controller via the control panel? Via game controllers?
Yes. It keeps giving me an error and from what I have noticed of, that panel can only co-operate with gameports. Since the error is related about gameport drivers... ...And I don't have any gameports.

But it does, and for that sake, the adapter is the exact same as a gameport. Perhaps you should try finding a new adaptor? Or perhaps, if you have an old sound card lying around, try stuffing that into your PC. Those have gameports.
I've gotten that exact controller! It works on Windows ME. If you really want to find out what it's like to play they make those with a USB head. However, there's still an outside chance that trying a new adapter could fix the problem. Maybe you should have a look in your devices to find anything obvious.

Isn't there an option in XP where you can add a custom gamepad by choosing the number of buttons and axises (axi?)? Or does XP just plain shut it out?
