How do I make my OWN custom music.

Link Thread Closed
I've looked through the files a hundred times, and I can't find the song I want. So to hell with the list, I'll make my own music.

How do I create my own music for my hack? I have midi files and sheet music to make the songs I want, but how do I accutally create a song file?

Well I am not the biggest book on making music, but here are some things I know:

They must be in txt. format.
There may be a tutorial in the Documents section.
Look off other music files if you need help.

Hope that helps!

No, I really knew most of that stuff.

Then what's the problem? If you know there is stuff that might help you in the documents section, then why don't you check that out first? Read the Music Porting tutorial and if you still have questions then ask.

Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
I'd use Anvil Studio if I was you. ;)
Anvil Studio is a music tool that enables you to make music and save as a midi. it's straight forward and easy to use.

LINK!
Download the first time release of Anvil Studio. it's free and works great. :P I think it comes with a readme and instructions but if not, don't worry, Obsidian I heard is making a tutorial that tells how to.

I don't need to make Midi Files........

But you need to port your song from the midi files.

You need to if you don't want to write a few hundred rows of random "abdddabadcabdcadbadcadbdc".

The midi file is not necessary. Custom music can be composed entirely in Notepad. In fact, using only Notepad is how I compose all my music.

...

even though i've only made one custom song that i've actually finished

True but it's easier to just make a midi then to go from there and port it. :3

I agree. It is alot easier to set up the notes in something like Anvil Studio and hear it from any spot in the song than to write in what notes you think fit and then test each note by counting how many notes go by and then tweaking it until you find the correct one. Just the thought of that gives me a headache. Maybe someone in the future will make a midi editor solely composed for music in SMW that can preview the instruments and convert them into a txt file with everything already fixed up. That definately won't be me though.
Also shut up.
I also say it can't hurt to look up the midi in a program first, in SMW you are limited t0 eight channels and each channel can only play one note at a time. Most Midis have much more channels than 8 and some of them have multiple notes playing in one channel so before converting the midi I would suggest to adjust the midi if neccessary.

After that, you can convert the midi to txt with tinymml or whatever and adjust the header etc... for that the tutorials are really helpful, and it also can't hurt to download a few songs from the custom music section and look up the txt-files to see how other people have done that.

Well it takes long time but use the addmusic tutorial (document). It has part that teach you how it works.
Here's also some bacics to get you started. Open your notebook/similar programm then ,
write:
______________________________________________________________________
;Example(here's the name of the song)
#0 w200 t50

#0 @5 q7f 200 y10
#1 @14 q7f 230 y10

#0
o3
c2d2e2f2
;

#1

c2d2e2f2
;
______________________________________________________________________

So, how it works? well, on the top is "#0 @5 q7f 200 y10".
It's called as a "channel". "#1,2,3whatever" is the number of the channel, "@5,1,2,3,whateveragain" is the chosen instrument.Five is acoustic guitar. more on addmusic tut.

Well, this..

No we let the acoustic guitar to play c,d,e,and f in octave number 3.
Timing... its after each note as a number, so c2 is half note.
timing's numbers: 1=whole note. 2=half note. 4=quarter note. etc...
NOTE: timing is limited to 62nd note, but i think you haven't to even use that 62nd note either.

oh, and channel #1 plays the Harpsichord.

for variety, write "d2e2f2g2" after "c2d2e2f2". like so
