It has come to my attention, now that we're 1000+ files and counting, how cluttered and disorganized the ExGFX section of the site is. That database is a HUGE resource, but in its current state, there is almost no chance of finding the file that best suits your need. Even when you're using finder (which is what i imagine most of you do), things can fall through the cracks, and its hard to accurately narrow down what you want.
The problem seems pretty obvious. As for the solution; here is what i propose -
First and foremost, split the database into 3 separate separate pages within the general 'ExGFX' category; foregrounds, backgrounds, and miscellaneous (files that contain both FG and BG graphics would be placed in both). This would reduce the loading time required to even view all of the files for those of us with slow internet connections.
Second, incorporate a filter system; make some categories such as 'style (realistic, semi-realistic, cartoon, abstract)', 'rip/original', and 'level type (mountain, plain, etc)'. i would also recommend giving users the option to view the file screenshots without clicking on each individual download link.
In addition, i recommend alowing users to make tags for their file, and incorporating a search system.
Finally, i think we can all attest to the fact that there is a wide range of quality in the files available. I suggest creating a 5 star ratings system that appears next to the name of each file (similar to the stars on youtube, but placed as previously stated)
Believe me, i understand how much code it would take to do some of these things - but honestly, its gotten kind of rediculous. if i were to show you a screenshot of one of the graphics files, i can say with reasonable assurance that it would take most of you about a good 20 to 30 minutes to find said file. plus, most of these ideas could be used for the other sections as well, so progress can be made towards any of the other databases as well.
thanks for your time.
