SMW Central 2.0 Feature Suggestions

Link Thread Closed
Um someone said LM doesn't work on anything but Windows, but it does, flawlessly now, in wine and darwine, since recently. The only hacking programs I can't seem to run via wine are the new BlockToolSuperDeluxe (the old one works fine) and the free space finder (use a hex editor).

Anyways, features, features.

PM on reply.
Layout preview, so you don't have to apply your layout to see if it works properly.

Someone said flash movies and music players and blah blah blah. Please don't make this site dependant on that stuff, they can be a real pain. Most of us prefer simple HTML, so we can get the information we need without having to sort through crap. Flash and Java where they're not supposed to be == floating munchers, yuck.

And that gives me another idea:

automatically replace embedded YouTube videos with an activation button or link.
Your layout has been removed.
Or just disallow embedding entirely.
Chatroom *shot*
No, seriously. Excuse me for being an inept *girl* but I just can't stand the IRC
-------------------------------
Suggestions I agree with (all that is in Italic, is my comments to the suggestion made earlier) :
-------------------------------

WhiteYoshiEgg - The possibility to mark threads, and get a PM from System whenever someone has posted in that thread.

Supertails - The ability to view which users rated a hack a certain number, to help eliminate spammers who 0 hacks for no reason

Ecaf Kcuf - A player so you can listen on the custom songs before downloading them.

yoshicookiezeus - A search bar would be great, so that before posting a question you could search the forums to see that it wasn't answered earlier.

Mugenman88 - The ability to flag or report posts

Dag-X-Mas - Remove the "Users online" list from the top and just replace it with a link to the list.
Me : Or put it at the bottom

spigmike : A Problem Solved checkbox for the creator of a thread so that when a problem is solved, they can self-close a thread.

Pester :

- Maybe have a "Featured Hack Log" which is just like the "Deleted Hack Log," except that it shows how the hack became featured and how it stood out from the rest of the hacks.

- Have a section for the File/Hack removal logs instead of condensing them into one topic.

uNkNowN5642 :
- "Horrid Hacks" Section
aka Kaizou hacks, hacks with Floating Munchers and cut-off tiles

- "Hall of Fame" Section
- "Hall of Shame" Section
Hacks that were accepted but they are very bad

Lucas : http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=thread&pid=200059
I agree fully with his posts

Geno_4_Ever : When making a thread, be able to have a description under it:

My Unamed Hack
-5 new screens

Foursword4 : I remember on Nsider forums, you had to be a certain rank to do certain actions and have certain abilities

Ice man :

- Smilies, definetly

- Search function -> Oftenly helps when searching data, stuff, text, etc.

- Be allowed to view voters of your files -> Maybe manage them as well to prevent joke ratings as in 0 spammers.

- Faster server!! -> This one loads really slow sometimes, unfortunately. :(
DAMN YES! That is one of the reasons why I don't frequent SMWC recently.

--------------------------------------------
It's now time for my own suggestions!
--------------------------------------------

- To be able to keep the good old SMWC v1 layout
- To have some kind of place in our profile where we can show our hacks and stuff we are currently making. No rating or commenting (that's what the forum is for right?). Also, in that place, we can post images, Youtube videos and stuff like that.
- Separate threads for each hack removal. If your hack has been removed both a PM and e-mail are sent to the sender to let him know of that reason (I think it was suggested before me... not entirely like that though)
- A fast reply?
- A layout maker (something rather simple though)

That's it.

I am of the opinion that N00b SMW hacking has to go. Hackers should learn to be more independant.

How about, Newbies, can only see certain forums. Like, they can start with Talk, Basic SMW Hacking, Art, World of Insanity, and gain accesses to the other ones by: Posting, Not Spamming, and acting maturely.

I totally dis agree. just because we just applied to the forums does'nt mean we're "Noobies". It means we have'nt posted much and have'nt gained any levels. There's alot of people, including myself, who are very good at smw hacking or even hacknig in general and are a low level. Don't exclude us because we just came to the site.

That's where the n00b quiz Dimentio suggested comes in handy. You take the quiz, and the quiz grades how much of a n00b you are. If you're a n00b, then you can only view so many forums. If you're not a n00b, then you can view a lot.
Now for my suggestion...
More profile fields. Such as age, about me, how I got into hacking, etc.
By the way, if you add a quiz, don't make it extremely hard. I'm not a n00b, but I don't know as much about hacking as some members...

I sayed newbies, not n00bs.

The newbie quiz might be a bad idea, because people don't just come to this site to hack SMW, there's SMW2 hacking, and there's the "other hacking" forum where people can talk about other hacking programs such as SMILE or DoubleHelix. I know what you'd be thinking of now is, then let's make a quiz individual to what a person is good at, but then if you do that, and the person decides that they want to hack a different game, then they won't be able to acess the other area's because they'd be restricted to the forums they've been assigned to.

Try thinking it through to make it fair for everybody, such as:

  • Actually use the ranking system for something. The more they level up and contribute, the more they can access. For each individual, example, a SMW hacker, starts out with n00b SMW forums, The Site, and maybe the talk forum, and gradually unlock other forums such as Advanced SMW Hacking and Basic. For people such as myself, who hack Yoshi's Island, can start off with the YI Forums open, Talk and The Site, and gradually gain access to other forums incase they change priority.

  • or:

  • Get permission to access the forums by the moderator that leads and watches over the forum. Have the person give in the work they have, and depending on how good it is, the Mod will decide which forums that user can access, and when the user thinks they've learnt alot and need some more forums to access to learn more complicated things, they can submit their new and better work they've learnt, so the mod opens more forums up for the user because they learnt something. Kind of like a schooling system.

I'm against the idea of excluding n00b hackers, simply because you were a n00b and a newbie once in your life as well, and imagine what it would've been like if you were treated like a lower class.

That's just my opinions on the whole n00b and newbie concept.

    Otherwise for my different idea:
    - Get a search bar to search through SMW/Nightfall, so incase your question is answered, you don't have to look through every forum.

Actually, I don't think we should have any kind of quiz whatsoever...
What if you've quit hacking and come to the site for company? You would never be able to see any boards! In my opinion, we shouldn't have a quiz or a limited number of boards people are aloud to see.

    My suggestion:
A preview button next to all music, blocks etc.
If you clicked the button, it would play the song, display an image of the sprite, or display an image of the block.
How about not having any stupid and complicated quiz systems?

Also: In the music section, instead of coding some flash music player, let's just have a link to a youtube video of the song in the description!
I didn't read the rest of the thread so yeah, but browsing the "hacks removal log" I saw some interesting hacks I wish I could of gotten to download before they got removed. When removing the hack and giving reasons and screen shots why, could a download link to the hack also be provided?
Check out my profile for awesomeness!
Well, since this is a thread where you can post ideas on how to improve the site, why not a search feature, where you can search for a forum, a hack you cant find or some info, you wont have to go and take up alot of time just trying to find it in the wrong place.

The search feature would be VERY helpful, atleast I think so.

an irc chat opener for http browsing or something like that? *shot*
    Fellow gamers...
I just got a brilliant idea!

How does a custom palette section sound? IMO, it wouldn't be a bad idea if it means lowering the amount of eye-searing palettes that can pop up in hacks from time to time.

I said that. If your going to make a suggestion, read other ones to see if your idea has already been realised :P

And that was less than 6 posts ago.

Edit (for about the 5th time): It seems that on the first page, someone said the Search idea before me AND you. My mistake, credit goes to yoshicookiezeus.

MORE ON TOPIC: Once the new site has been made...

    a) Will there be a waiting period? Or is the site being made on a different URL, so we can keep SMWC'ing while its being made, and once it's finished the link is released?
    b) Do we lose everything we have on SMWC? Such as levels, posts, profile information, and all that stuff we work really hard to get and make?

Or will this site (www.smwcentral.net) just be get a makeover?
Ugh, it's getting on my nerves. If you wanna search, look here.
How about putting a featured hack that is available on this site (Just putting the game on a web page of a section "games") instead of being a pain to download the hack and patch, so people new to the site can get the feel for actually downloading "other" hacks?
    I know!

How about a hack section for other games as well, example: Yoshi's Island!

It was a pain trying to find a good hosting site so i can link a patch to this site, and the File Bin wouldn't work for me either. I couldn't find ANYTHING until Golden Yoshi finally helped me out. Plus, it would be good to get people to review the hacks like in the SMW one.

Btw, i'm talking about something like this.

Maybe make a sub-section for different game hacks?
