Pokey's Adventure (New story)

Yep, these levels are just for fun, and for the sake of getting all exits. ;)

I finished the shop level! Well, I've yet to add the actual shop blocks, but I'll do that tomorrow.

The shop on the overworld.

The shopkeeper!

Seems like he has a lot to say... Thanks to Dispari's NPCs.

Probably I'll also add the general WhiteYoshiEgg decorations in the ground, as always.

Also, I've made a video of Switch Lagoon, but since it's late and it takes too long to upload it to Youtube, I guess I'll do that tomorrow as well. :P

Feedback is appreciated, as usual. ;)

Oooh...I like the starry atmosphere of the shop. Looks quite neat. :)

I assume you are using the latest version of the NPCs to get the Toad to display two messages one after another. Also, what items will be available for purchase? Just your standard mushroom-fire flower-feather fare?

Looking good. :)
I agree, it's a very nice athmosphere, but I have an idea how to make it grater ^^
Just change the blue/purple in the background to black, and make the black outside the floor/ceiling the color the bg had. (or you can just make everything black)
If you doubt it, here's how it will look:

(I made it in paint, and yes, I am bored.)

I'm sorry, just had to do it.

What items will there be?
You should make the white yoshi eggs like big and neon!
@Golden Yoshi: Probably there will just be mushrooms, flowers, feathers and stars. I actually thought there would be more stuff to sell... Meh.

@MATTAN: Oh, that looks so much better. I'll change it right now. Thanks!

Heh, that was intentional. Did you notice he has the same clothes as the Cd-I shopkeeper (except for the yellow parts, which I turned black, and the hat)? :P

@Simple Stocking: Nah, I prefer the simple small ones. ;)

Thanks for the comments. Also, as a little christmas present, the video of Switch Lagoon:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bSGJyI5HINI&hl=de&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bSGJyI5HINI&hl=de&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Another small update on the shop:

- Added "WhiteYoshiEgg" decorations
- Changed the ground color to match the one of my layout for the lulz
- Self-drawn block GFX (No, you can't get the powerups above them, they're just blocks set to act like tile 25.)

Comments?

Also, for those who want to see it: Solracxealz reviewed Pokey's Adventure! (Review in description)

The big fish are beautifuly animated!
WYE, you never cease to impress me and SMWCentral. I was surprised when I saw that huge Blurp coming at you. Also, those are some neat graphics.
The Fish looks awesome and the prices are perfect =).
And the Idea to make a puzzle for the switch block is also awesome!
I am waiting for the second demo :).

By the way, I gaved up hacking SMW. I think I'll come back, but not yet. ~ X-King
I absolutely love your level design and graphical consistencies you produce in your hack. Great job and keep at it! How long do you plan on making your hack? (How many worlds ,levels etc.)
Thanks! :D I don't really know how long it's going to be yet, but I think it will be quite short, about 6 or 7 worlds. Demo 2 will include 3 worlds, in case you don't know yet.

It's been quite a while... I haven't felt like working on the hack recently, and I started a small secondary hack in the meantime. Today, however, I somehow got a little motivated again. "Amapola Underground" is now almost finished! :D Here are some screens:

Even more Rexes.

Spin-break those blocks and get rewarded with some coins!

The ON/OFF switch in this level is actually a self-made custom block, since there were tileset issues with the original switch's bounce sprite. For some reason, this block doesn't always work though... Meh, this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Another switch block puzzle. I guess I have to go down...

...but I can only go right. I really hope there's a switch there...

Ah, there is one!

Oh, a pipe... Where does it lead to?

A skull ride!

That's it already... Feedback is appreciated. ;) I hope I'll feel like hacking a little more in the near future.

To me, the FG looks a little plain in comparison to the BG. Maybe the FG could use a little more texture/decoration? Also, I hate implementing the floating skulls because they take up so much sprite space...keep in mind you can separate the skulls and have the player ride on 1 or 2 of them instead of four. That gives you more sprite room, at the expense of making the section a little harder. Then again, I always thought skull rides were kinda easy and boring.

Finally, you could try giving some of the sprites more muted colors to fit the underground motif, as long as doing so doesn't mess up the colors for anything else.

The switch block setups look good, like in SS 5-6: backtracking becomes harder thanks to larger gaps in the platforms. Design looks good, though I can't divine much from these SS. The skull ride should provide variety so long as it isn't slow and tedious.

Hmm, I always write a lot when I analyze levels >_<

Well, I hope this helps you.

This hack's gfx really reminds me of yoshi's island! Not saying you have to, but have you tried YI koopas and other enemy gfx? I'm curious how that would look
@AxemJinx: Thanks for your suggestions! I'll certainly take them into consideration. I've been told to add more detail to the foreground several times already, but it's quite hard to do this without destroying the original style of it... I'll see what I can do though.
I've never really used custom enemy palettes in different levels, but it sounds like a good idea, especially if it emphasizes the level's feel - I'll give this a try.
As for the skull ride, it's pretty short, and I'm not too satisfied with it, so I might replace it with something else later.

@Simple Bag: I don't think YI enemies would fit... I could try redrawing them in my style, but I pretty much suck at drawing sprite GFX. :(

Something pretty major today:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iBFcCNJpcUA&hl=de&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iBFcCNJpcUA&hl=de&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I remade the intro! :D Now it's a little more detailed and looks better. Also, it shows that I'm aware of the contradiction in the plot ("Can he really be that evil?")

On a less important note, I tried to give more texture to the cave GFX:

Feedback is appreciated, as always. ;)

I can't better say: GREAT, this is one of the greatest hacks, that I ever seen. The intro is super and cute (mainly the little Pokeys :3), the cave looks awesome! Second demo NOW! :D
I'd say the intro is much better now - I'm almost sure you spent quite a lot of time working on it... and it turned out nicely. The graphics are also better, though you only did some small changes here and there... nevertheless, good job!
I still stand by the suggestion that the letter text be changed. {:(

Bowser isn't the type of person to wonder if his army's strong enough. He has big dreams of conquest! He's ambitious! He'd say that our Pokey won't get past the first castle.

Any texture to those cave/grass/sand/snow/jungle/dirt/ghost/coral/cloud graphics is good texture. While custom sprites are better when they are modifiable, the opposite holds true for graphics. I see the ledges are still blank, though...
