Nice looking level you got there. I'm also loving the graphical style of your hack, even though most of the graphics are from SMAS (in fact, I like SMAS graphics). The level design, however, seems a bit too linear - I guess that'd be different in-game, but I'm not sure. Also, I would suggest to change the background as well - I reckon it does not fit with the muddy forest foreground somehow.

Other than what I complained, this hack's looking great! B)

Thanks for feedback! And yeah I've already aid I was going to change the background. Have you got any reccomendations? i haven't seen anything I really think works well with it.

And I have a feeling you're right, all of my levels are pretty linear. I'll need to work on that before demo 1.
Hmm... judging by the level's name, I suppose you're looking for a background filled with hills, huh? I've made some nice backgrounds that you might want to use (NEO Happy Hills/Custom Mountain/etc), but if you'd rather use ripped backgrounds, there are some quite nice ones around here, such as this one and this one (I haven't chosen any backgrounds related to hills, but they would fit nicely with the foreground IMO.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try NEO Happy hills first, I think...

Ok, any music reccomendations?

*Edit* I've found the perfect background!!

Opinions? I think it looks great, but that might just be me.
I know about the crappy looking health bar, but I might not be able to fix that too easily.
Ok Heres a small extract from the end of the intro cutscene.

It's by far the most awesome thing I've ever done in my life, bar nothing.
Lol, thats awesome
It's nice!
The hack seems good, this is on my "must have" list. :)

Sweet. If I really work hard, I'll have demo 1 ready by Christmas, so thats something to look forward to, right?

I'm currently revamping level 1-1. it's no longer so linear, and goes into caves etc.

At the end of the first section you are presented with a seemingly bottomless pit that leaves into the cave. How do you know you wont die if you jump down it? well...

Anything you say, Mr. Animated Paper Mario pointy hand!

Thats right, an animated hand tells you it's not hazardous. Awesome, right?
That's such a great idea, Doomdragon! The graphics of the PM hand are also really well-done. The first level is also looking much better now, and is surely nice to know that you're revamping it so that it's more unlinear. However, I don't like Mario's palette really much, as it's too bright compared to the palette of the things around him. I think you should use the regular palette of Mario from SMW Redrawn for it. Otherwise, everything is looking neat so far, keep it up!

Wow, Thanks for all the praise!

I definately agree that mario's palette doesn't match the FG. I'll see what I can do: I might use the SMA4 mario palette rather than the SMAS one.
This hand is pretty awesome!Paper Mario was one of my favorites games!
And your intro cutscene is more awesome!I hope I can play a demo!

F-Mario X News:C3 Thread Ahead!
By the way, I gaved up hacking SMW. I think I'll come back, but not yet. ~ X-King
Wow, that hand is really awesome:D and the intro too:)
hehe thanks guys! :D

Now, here's a screenshot from the cave in the latter part of Twilight Walkway (Level 1-1, for those who don't know):

Thats only a tiny bit of it. To summarize, it involves Buzzy beetles, pirhana plants, spike tops, swoopers, ledges, water and a puzzle to get a key.

Man, this has been making huge progress lately. At this rate, I'll have demo 1 definately ready by Christmas!
Great to know that the demo's coming soon! Can't wait to check it out. As for the screenshot, I'd say there's something in there that reminds me a lot of Super Mario Advance 4... I guess it's the palette or something, used in the foreground. Also, seems like this small cave portion of the level has quite some unlinearity - I'm guessing this because I can see some multiple pathes in this screenshot, which is nice. I'm looking forward to seeing more from it, this is looking rather cool. :)

Good guess! it is indeed the SMA4 palette (For a bit of variety).

Correct again. This level has lots of branching paths to form the 'get the key' challenge.
Okay, fairly big update today.

I've modified the overworld, and removed that large Bowser's castle because it looked a bit stupid. With all the excess space, I've now added mario's House! (The overworld itself has a slightly nicer palette as well).

BEFORE

AFTER

Yes I know those SMB3 OW objects don't really match the overworld, but I'll see what I can do.

heres the house itself:

Thats right, it appears in the intro title screen!

See??

But now the important part: The house interior itself:

Yep, Luigi's wondering around and offers some slightly pointless advice. I'm going to add some furniture and maybe even more rooms in the near future.

(And if you ask me nicely I might release the Toad House interior graphics).
This is great! It's nice to know that you work on this fairly often given the big update in only about 10 days =)
The Screenies, let's see:

SS 1) OW looks cool, but are you going to stick with Redrawn's OW GFX? It doesn't fit the style of the hack IMO and I never liked it really.

SS 2) Looks very nice, I assume that the hack starts off in the night? No complaints here

SS 3) IMO, you can see too much orange shading on the title screen. You should change that. And also, the small stars kinda clutter up the star quest text. Might be just me though. Othe than that, it looks good.

SS 4) Room looks nice, great to know you're going to add some extra stuff to it! My only complaint is that black square... Is it supposed to be a door? Give it some outline or something, it doesn't look good just black =/

This hack is looking great, keep up the nice work. It's on my 'to play when released' list of hacks to play =)

1). I might change it back to original SMW, or use some SMB3 graphics. Only problem with SMB3 OW graphics is ou can't have cliffs, it's just flat.

2). Yeah Peach's astle and Mario's house are both night-time. (Oh, and so's level 1-1)

3). I'm going to make some custom 'Star Quest' text in the near future!

4). Yeah the black square is the door... I thought it would be ok because in the original SMAS game the door is just a black square...
Ok guys, THIS is officially

THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER DONE.

Thats right, even cooler than the Hotel mario intro.

Well, we all know the first Level of Super Probotector (Or as you America folks call it, Contra III), (And incase you don't, heres a screenshot.

The BG was released in the ExGFX section a while ago by MetaKinght, but thus far nobody's attempted to rip the FG.

UNTIL NOW!!!

Thats right, I've ripped, ported and assembled the entire Contra III FG in Super mario World. Take a look.

Dare to compare!

This is BY FAR the best thing i've ever done.
_______________________________

Some people my complain that Mario blatantly doesn't fit with this FG, but to be honest I think that adds a certain quirkiness. (Sorta like Mushroom Kingdom Fusion).

So far my only concern is without coding sprites from Contra, this level may well be boring: We'll see. (This is likely to be a later level, so you wont be able to play it until a later demo).

Heres the bad news though.

It was an Absolute Beast to assemble, and it's still no 100% done yet, so I wont be releasing it. I'm sorry! (Perhaps if you're lucky I'll release it in the future if I change my mind).

Seriously, look what I had to work with.

Shit.

And thats not even half of it! (Thats just under 1/2 of the whole set).

Heres what I've done so far:

*Taken from the 16x16 tile editor*.

Thats right, even the ruined Cafe is included! AND THE BINZ!

_______________________________

On a serious note, these GFX will be in Star Quest, but not a level remake from Contra 3. (Nonono, I've got big plans for these graphics).

The level is so far called 'Ground Zero'.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, i've also directly ported the music from Contra.

Heres a link to the background (Not made by me).

Comments?

*Edit* On a slight side note, this now means I've done all 3 kinds of ExGFX insertion: Drawing it myself, Ripping from a sprite sheet and finally ripping it from a game.

I hereby declare myself Lord of ExGFX.

Now that's just plain awsome !

Oh my god, awesome! There are no other words to describe this. It's just awesome.
