Ask anything about SMW Hacking! (Generic version)

Link Thread Closed
Alrighty. I've changed most of Mario's sprites into my new character's sprites, but there's still one more thing that I need to ask about. Whenever my character is big and is either running, doing a running jump, swimming, or is ordering Yoshi to attack, these extra junk sprites appear around my character that I can't find in the same area that contains the Mario sprites. Anyone know where those extra sprites are located so that I could change them?
I'm currently taking an indefinitely long break from ROM hacking to play World of Warcraft again. Anyone may check out my user bio for more information on what I'm planning for Rainbow Legends: S********'s Adventure.
Mario's hand and feet graphics are actually in GFX00 near the Nintendo logo
Quick question; is there a custom block inserter that inserts ONE block at a time? Block tool is failing me, and I need 2 blocks in my hack.

Thought so. Thanks for confirming it for me.

Are the blocks that you're trying to insert into your hack custommade by you, or did they come with your copy of Block Tool? Personally, I've yet to insert any custommade blocks (whether you created them or not) that did not come with Block Tool, but I might plan on doing so sometime in the future.

I'm trying to look for that rotating fire stick that kills you in SMB1 on some Castles. I want to know where i can find it, here is a Image to indicate what i'm talking about. What is that called anyways? I know there is a propper name for it, idk it though.

It's at the sprite-section and it's called a Firebar.
Here's the downloadlink.
Are any of the colours in palette 8 not used by Mario? I've made a graphic to replace the key for one of my levels, but the key shares Mario's palette, and I don't want Mario to have wierd colours...

Could someone tell me if their is a forum for custom music request?

Yeah, there's a music request thread in the sticky section of the SMW hack discussion forum.

Anyway, I REALLY need help! I'm trying to change the title screen music. The FAQ said to go to offset x18C7 and change it to my OW music number. However, offset x18C7 is #$22, not #$01! I don't know what 22 is supposed to be, and when I try to change it to my music number, #$0F, the game freezes after the Nintendo Presents logo. I NEED HELP!

Errr... they're blocks that Golden Yoshi made for me. Is there a way to insert them, like by manually inserting the hex?

Like the "old school" way, if there ever was one?
Here's a strange issue I've been having when I try to insert custom blocks via block tool (super deluxe).

The blocks work as intended in non-custom levels. But if I try to put one into a custom level they crash the game instantly when Mario interacts with them. I fiddled with various header properties but nothing helps. I started with a clean ROM and copied over the levels in question - same problem. Help?

update: I have no idea what's happening. If I place s block in an otherwise unedited level it's fine. If I put it in an already customized level it causes crashes. I copied the objects/background of one of the bugged levels into a new level; crashes. I deleted everything in the new level, turned off all ExGFX and custom palette, and, unless I missed one, copied the headers from one of the working non-customied levels; crashes.

update 2: Okay apparently the problem is my custom BG. I have no clue why but if I'm using a custom BG it causes the problem. Any ideas? I should note that it causes the issue even with ExGFX turned off. I have to copy a (default) BG from another level to fix the issue (which is, of course, not a real fix).

Checksum OK, ROM is clean and unpatched...

Hi.
I've got a question: is there a way to prevent the star/pow music from looping when using custom music?

Waluigi needs his own game, he doesn't even have character!

Answer: If you want to fix a ROM with already added custom music, open the ROM by hex editor. Next, search "1A 09 20 8D FB 1D 9C DA 0D 6B" and change to "1A 09 20 8D FB 1D 8D DA 0D 6B."

im trying to change the mario graphics into shyguy graphics, but im having problems with the fire ball, how can i make shuyguy throw a hammer, without changing the fireball that venus will throw???

I think you will have to change its tilemap, which requires little ASM knowledge. I might be wrong though.

Can someone kindly tell me what this block is and where I can find it:
you complete a level, but when you re-enter, it is another level. I have seen this in Golden Yoshi's hack and The Fourth Sector hack.
Well, in the overworld editor, where you set the level number, check off the "midway point obtained" setting. Now, in the level you are using, set the midway point as the main level entrance and put the main entrance in a part of the level you know the player can't access it, like somewhere after the goal point and build the "2nd level" where you put the main entrance.

Now, this is what's going to happen with these settings:

- Player enters levels, begins at "midway" point.
- Player plays through level and beats the level.
- Having beat the level, the midway flag is reset, so when the player re-enters the level, he starts at the "main" entrance, aka your 2nd level.

I hope that helps :D

And happy 500th post to me :D
That's correct and you can use "No entry if level passed" ;) this is just a notice for everyone who want to make "message"level and he don't want to use to much level just for messages!
I'm looking for the reloc offsets for the following blocks that come with Block Tool v2.0:

Right Boost Block With Sound
Left Boost Block With Sound
Jump Block With Sound
Fall Block With Sound
Random Boost Block With Sound

I'm asking this because Block Tool won't open at all for me, so I can't read the reloc offsets for any of the blocks that come with Block Tool. (Because Block Tool isn't working at all for me anymore, I'm trying to port all these blocks to Block Tool Super Deluxe, and all I need now are the reloc offsets for each of these blocks.) :(

I really need to know what to do, since the original title screen music reeealy doesn't fit the somber mood of my opening.
Are you using Romi's Addmusic? On a clean ROM the byte at offset x018C7 is 01, while in my hack (which is using Romi's Addmusic too) it's 22, as you said. In that case, you have to change the title screen song in the Addmusic.ini file.
