SMWCentral Idol: Preliminaries (Deadline reached!)

Link Thread Closed

Music

This initial challenge will be unlike any other challenges in this entire contest.

Any user who wants to join the contest will have to submit a port of

Super Mario Bros. - Overworld Theme

in PM's to each of our judges.

The challenge criteria will be:

0-4 pts. - Accuracy compared to original song
0-2 pts. - Errors(Less errors = Higher Score)
0-4 pts. - Overall Sound

After all entries are graded, the top 12 entries will all make it to the first actual round of SMWCentral Idol.

Anyone who makes it will automatically get a "SMWCentral Idol Contender" badge. Badges will eventually be rewarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

The top entry will be submitted to the Custom Music section and will recieve automatic "Highly Reccommended" status. The other 11 entries that make it will also be submitted, in case anyone liked a different version better.

Entries for the Preliminary Round must be submitted no later than 6:00 PM EST on Thursday, September 11th

The only replies that should appear in this thread are questions regarding the challenge, and an SPC file of your entry, if you wish to supply one. </i>

Scientific genius!Do we have to use a specific MIDI, or can we make our own?

Listen to the SRB2 Soundtrack! It's awesome! AWESOME I SAY! Also, PM me if you ever wanna do SRB2 with me.
You can use any method, as long as it ends up being a port of the song that the challenge asks for.

I'm not too good at custom music... but I guess I'll try this... just for boredom.

EDIT: Actually, since I suck so much at custom music, I'm going to drop out of this.
May I use Sample banks (smkdan tool)?
Mega Mario:
Because we are not judging how well you implemented the samples, and samples would complicate the "Joint File" of all the non-winning songs, you ARE NOT ALLOWED to use sample banks.

However, you may use the SPC-Patch that allows you to use the $ED command.

And since no one has ever instructed on its use, and so everyone knows how to use it, here we go.

$ED Command

The $ED command modifies many things about how an instrument is played, it modifies how fast the sample is played, volume, etc.

Format: $ED $WX $YZ

WXYZ go from 0>F

if WX/YZ is 00 or FF, nothing will play.

Use $ED in place of $YZ for starters

$4F, $5F, or $6F work well with $WX to provide synth effects with instruments such as @11.

$48 works great with $WX and @0 to provide a more natural flute.

Other than that, try it for yourself.

Note: the command goes just below the #0 @0 q7f v255 y10 area in each channel. It can't be changed mid-channel.

What? I don't get it. Are we supposed to try and make one that would suit an overworld for it? SMB doesn't have an overworld.
This is usually called "Super Mario Bros. Overworld Theme".

Overworld is a term often used to describe any above ground areas in a game.

Super Mario Bros. - Overworld Theme is the main Mario theme that you hear anywhere...

...oh...

I think this'll be kinda easy.
Looks interesting. I'm not sure if I'm going to participate, I'm kinda horrible with music porting. I tried once, but I couldn't listen the song in my hack. But, who knows, maybe I can give a try if I become bored...
Ehh, this would be a better contest if you had to remix it.
Aren't they allowed to choose the songs they perform on those idol shows, even in the tryouts?

I really think this would be better if we got to choose the song we try and port.
I made a standalone game once, look for Seabug Stampede on Google Play.
It's a lot tougher to grade lots of different songs on the same criteria, it's different with singing, but since it's porting... well eh...

And, Aiyo, it's only the first challenge, wait and see what we have in store... ;)

*crosses fingers*
Scientific genius! Can we use the SMAS remix or does it have to be from the NES?

I've had SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many questions regarding remixes.

Basically, if you use one, you'll lose accuracy points.
(You could, based on how well you do, gain some overall sound points though)

But a perfect port of the original would get a better score than a perfect port of a remix.

HOWEVER, some challenges in the future may ask you to remix a song, or something along those lines.

So... you want it to sound like on a NES?

Anyways, thanks for the explanation and examples for the $ED command, I haven't found any information on these "newer" commands yet since they came out, so that's much appreciated.

Yes, what FPI said about $ED. I really didn't get it.

I guess I'll give this a shot. For some reason, I don't plan on making it very far.
I'm just gonna stick to music...
OK, I'm done with mine, who are the judges? because I need to send it to them.

EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't see the other thread, you should link to it in this one, as some people come here from the link on the frontpage (like me :P).
