Gambol - My First hack - Mid intermediate Kaizo - Work in Progress thread

Kaizo

Heyooo!

I'm Jez and working on my first ever hack so thought i'd post a little thread of some of the stuff i've got so far. I showed off a couple exits and posted these gifs for the past two C3s, thought it would be nice to post my screenshots here and update with progress.

Gambol

The title means 'to run or jump about playfully'... and that's the plan, hopefully a fun hack that is a good challenge for newer players, but still satisfying for the advanced.

Aiming for low/mid intermediate so hopefully not too hard, not too easy but just solid platforming fun. 98% of the hack so far is vanilla and plan to keep it that way, apart from palette overhaul and vanilla graphic edits.

I'm planning to make around 12 exits - and we are super close, I'm currently working through the final leve.. then i've got a couple half levels to polish off - and maybe another level depending on how it all feels - started some of the overworld - but several levels need music, and loose ends to finish up.

After that, the plan is to get it over to the hands of some testers, and release it... this year. It's all this work in progress so anything could change at this point, but i just hope i can give back to this amazing community in my own little way. Keep ya eyes peeled.

I'm fully open to any feedback or advice from the gifs you see below and would be very much appreciated.

Overworld is completely new to me and this is what i've knocked up so far - plenty more to go...

Anyway, there's a little peek, don't want to show off everything as want some setups and sections to be a little surprise for some. Hopefully, some of you look forward to playing.

I'm not a big kaizo player but I have to say your palette choices are very nice, everything is very visually appealing and very clear on what's FG vs BG. I also like the subtle tiny coin that's helping direct the player where they need to go.

One suggestion I do have for the OW though is the small waterfall having the upper portion end up in a small pool and not directly on top of the lower waterfall.
Here's a small mockup to better explain what I mean.

On a side note if you need a thread moved in the future feel free to reach out to any Forum Moderators that way you won't lose any replies that may exist.

Thanks means a lot! It's very easy to get carried away with palettes - espeically when trying to keep things from being too busy.

Ah yeah.. Good spot, I've been meaning to revisit that section but your mock up is super helpful.

Thanks for heads up! Didn't have any replies but will do so in the future!
Another little section done for the castle gauntlet.

Still plenty of tweaks to be had - especially with the colour palette, need to make the foreground/kaizo block stand out more.
