Paperdomo101's Porting Prelude

Super Mario WorldMusic

Around a week ago I decided I wanted to learn how to port, so I sat down, followed along Wakana's excellent tutorial, and now I present to you the ports I have made that I am happiest with!

These are all original compositions apart from the last.
The first four are songs from an unfinished game called Blimey Seltzer and the Hells Bells.

The fifth is from a jam game I worked on called > Retrieve Legs

The last is a dungeon theme from Majora's Mask.

Hope you enjoy listening and have a good C3!
Very nice work! I'm never really sure how to give meaningful comments on music, but I like what I hear for non-sampled ports from someone who is just getting a handle on the craft. Hope you can keep it up!
I'll say that I think that Great Bay Temple sounds odd, probably because of that noise in the background doesn't quite sound like anything from the original song. It's at its best when other instruments sort of drown it out.
My favorite out of the bunch is Prelude Woods personally - it's a very mellow kind of sound that feels perfectly balanced.

Other Submissions of mine!
Thank you very much!

I agree, the mechanical humming in Great Bay Temple is not captured very well. At the point that I made that particular port I didn't know how to make custom instruments and I didn't realize I could extend notes on forever i.e. 1^1^1 and so on.
The best I could figure was looping a bass sample and oscillating the volume manually. I tried to do custom sampling for that particular effect but I ran into problems with BRRTools.

I'm glad you like Prelude Woods, it's a song I've made many variations on mainly because I couldn't get the melody out of my head.
I also like Prelude Woods. It's so smooth and listenable. A lot of your compositions have a really rhythmic and melodic quality that I envy. Cheers! #smrpg{y}

Thank you, that means a lot!
I've been listening these for a while, Prelude Woods is really nice, definitely my favorite one. Co(r)psevale is also really good.

Good job!

Like other people have already said, Prelude Woods sounds lovely - paints a picture of a nice overworld or dreamy-looking forest level. Instruments sound nice on it. Rhythmically, Co(r)psevale is a personal favorite of mine with some really nice sounding drums throughout that carry the listener along for the ride until the end.

Tombgarden is the only one where I wish it had different instruments. It's melodically interesting, but the instrument choices hold it back a bit I think. Still, that's a small, easily fixable issue and I think you have a real talent here with music.
Thank you both, I'd love to finish the game that these songs are supposed to be in!

 Veck, once I figure out what I'm doing wrong with sampling, I'll redo the instruments on Tombgarden. It was a tricky one to match because the original song is mostly grand piano.
These are some quite good ports, especially for someone getting just recently into porting!
Personally I liked the Prelude Woods the most and I wonder how far you'll get with porting once you get more experience with it over time #tb{:D}

Thank you! So far I've really been enjoying porting, the only holdups I'm having are in sampling.

These are pretty good, especially for only a week or two! Always nice to see some new faces pick up porting. I look forward to seeing what you do from here!
