SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #1 2021 - end

MusicOther Contest/Event

Neko Case - Deep Red Bells
Morusque/Nurykabe - Se visite aussi en véhicule (sure)

Excited to be moving on to the brackets! Looking forward to seeing familiar songs return and voting being less of a time investment.

This set was one of those where pretty much every song fell under "it's okay", and my order was basically just determined by how "okay" I thought every song was compared to the others. The set kinda fell off towards the end, but overall I think this was a solid one to end on.

1. Michiko Naruke - Town Where the West Wind Blows: I like this one. Has a nice bassline. I do think it's a bit short, though.
2. Shoh Murakami - An Exciting New Day: This song's nice. Not much else to add
---------------
3. the booyah! kids - idwtgtbt: I dunno, man...I usually find this kind of music annoying, but I actually liked this. I almost think it'd be better as an instrumental, though.
4. Kendrick Lamar - untitled 02: Ehhhhh...I didn't really care for this until around the last third of the song.
5. Neko Case - Deep Red Bells: Took this long for a country song to show up, huh? Even then, this song seems to lean a bit more into folk than country. I'm personally...okay with country music, as long as it's not the nationalist garbage that a lot of modern country artists (especially male ones) like to make nowadays. As for this song, it's not bad. That said, it's not really something I'd go out of my way to listen to.
6. 猫叉Master - Byakuya Gentou Long Version: I was liking this at first, but it just drags way too much around the second half.
7. Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok: This is another one of those songs that I can already tell is going to get stuck in my head for weeks, even though I didn't like it all that much. I do really like the music video, though.
8. Morusque/Nurykabe - Se visite aussi en véhicule: This was kinda boring, at least to listen to by itself. It reminded me of the ambient music you'd hear in something like Minecraft or Terraria.

Enjoyed all 8 of these; RNG really saved some of the best for last.
Shoh Murakami - An Exciting New Day

Michiko Naruke - Town Where the West Wind Blows
Now that I've started working, I won't be able to be as active as before. This is really very sad and depressing for me.

Wow, the Preliminary Round is coming to a close! Crazy to think how this started back in September, and it'll still be going with the shift to brackets. #smrpg{gasp}

1. the booyah! kids - idwtgtbt
2. Shoh Murakami - An Exciting New Day

Byakuya Gentou came in really close for me, but I just felt that the long version was a bit too long.
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
1. Kendrick Lamar - Untitled 02: Welcome to the jazz paranoia room zone place

2. Michiko Naruke - Town Where the West Wind Blows: hangs out
My choices are:
  1. Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok
(Always hearing this song that's stuck in my head!)
  2. 猫叉Master - Byakuya Gentou Long Version

Honorable mentions:
  • Shoh Murakami - An Exciting New Day
  • Kendrick Lamar - untitled 02
(We still need more Kendrick Lamar soon enough.)
  • Michiko Naruke - Town Where the West Wind Blows

And with this vote, I have a perfect record on voting on every preliminary set. Phew! Don't think I'll be voting on some subsequent rounds.

My picks...
  • 猫叉Master - Byakuya Gentou Long Version
  • Shoh Murakami - An Exciting New Day

And some commentary...
  • Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok pulled off the 'ole switcheroo after 40 seconds. That's an interesting twist...

This one ended up by process of elimination.
Shoh Murakami - An Exciting New Day
Michiko Naruke - Town Where the West Wind Blows

List Soundtrack - List Hacks

Mega Man X3 OSTs
1. Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok: This is really catchy. It's got that bare bones 'boots and cats' drum beat, but the other instruments and vocals give this song a real good groove. The chorus is going to be stuck in my head haha.

2. the booyah! kids - idwtgtbt: This was a fun song. Simple composition but the lyrics are what you're mostly paying attention to. All it really uses is a drum machine, and synth. And it manages to be pretty catchy with just that.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Neko Case - Deep Red Bells: The clean guitar alongside the female vocalist is pleasant. The amount of reverb used creates a certain amount of space within the track. I particularly like the reverb on the vocals.

Shoh Murakami - An Exciting New Day: This tune gives me a sense of triumph. All of the instruments go towards an upbeat and positive energy. Overall for VGM it's not too bad.

Michiko Naruke - Town Where the West Wind Blows: The wind instrument in this makes me happy. It really sets the tone for this song. It feels like I'm in a far off village living out a peaceful farm life or something.

Morusque/Nurykabe - Se visite aussi en véhicule : Had trouble getting into this one. The percussion is interesting but that's about all there is. At about the halfway point things pick up a little bit with other sounds, but meh.

猫叉Master - Byakuya Gentou Long Version: This song picks up pretty much immediately from a quiet wind section to a full performance. It feels like the percussion is way out front and the rest of the band is trying to meld around it. It's got a nice beat though. The wind instrument throughout the song is nice.

Kendrick Lamar - untitled 02
: Alexa, stop.

MY TWO CHOICES:

PERFECT!!
1. MICHIKO NARUKE - TOWN WHERE THE WEST WIND BLOWS: I feel like in heaven when I listen to this.
2. MURRAY HEAD - ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK

HONORABLE MENTION:

GREAT!
3. 猫叉Master - Byakuya Gentou Long Version

AND THE OTHER SONGS:

GooD
4. Neko Case - Deep Red Bells
5. Morusque/Nurykabe - Se visite aussi en véhicule
6. Shoh Murakami - An Exciting New Day

ALMOST
7. the booyah! kids - idwtgtbt

Boo!
8. Kendrick Lamar - untitled 02
1. Michiko Naruke - Town Where the West Wind Blows (pretty cool RPG town theme, especially like when the backing strings part with the cool, emotional chords come in alongside the hilarious-but-neat-enough-for-the-song SM64 sounding pan flute lead, all around nice track in general lol)

2. 猫叉Master - Byakuya Gentou Long Version (honestly, I'll admit this might be sorta repetitive, but I have a soft spot for traditional Japanese sounding shit like this, and this is definitely my jam; really want to make something like this one day, dunno why but there's just something about traditional Japanese music that has a extremely neat sound to it that I really want to replicate myself, and y'know, try to infuse it with my own style just for the heck of it haha)

3. Kendrick Lamar - untitled 02 (ngl, as a guy who doesn't listen to rap often but tends to enjoy it more often than not, this was pretty neat, and I definitely enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting lol; the backing track here seems nice as well, wonder where it's from 👀)

4. Morusque/Nurykabe - Se visite aussi en véhicule (this one was also nice, although unlike the other repetitive track, this one started fairly interesting but didn't do all that much with it to justify voting for it, so uh. yeah.)

5. the booyah! kids - idwtgtbt (nice as well, sounds sorta like a mix of breakbeat and alt. rock (?) which is an interesting combination for sure lmao; but yeah, other than that it didn't do all that much for me sadly)

6. Neko Case - Deep Red Bells (same as above, except for the whole "fusion of genres that I don't even know if they were intentional to begin with" thing being absent here I guess)

7. Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok (honestly, the beginning kinda reminded me of a JoJo track for some reason lmao; otherwise...? ehh, it's fine I guess)

8. Shoh Murakami - An Exciting New Day (honestly, this definitely sounds the most generic of the bunch IMO; I guess I like that it sounds like a mix of NES chiptune and more modern instrumentation, but the music itself sounds boring as all hell... definitely not for me IMO)
