SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #1 2021 - end

MusicOther Contest/Event

David Wise & Kenji Yamamoto - Harvest Hazards
Falcom Sound Team jdk - Sealed Time

Here are my picks for this set...
  • Dr. Pez - Normal Battle [Pokemon TCG](Band Cover)
  • Lena Raine - Reach for the Summit

And some commentary...
  • Four songs ended up deadlocking for one of the slots, and I felt the other three were too mediocre for me to include them there, so thus one out of these four ended up going in that slot. The contenders were Ujico*/Snail's House - Strawberry, Falcom Sound Team jdk - Sealed Time, EX-LYD - Ocean of Colors (part 2) and Lena Raine - Reach for the Summit. I ended up choosing the last one, but unlike the last time I chose one by Lena Raine (Resurrections), there wasn't as much for me to go off of: if these two songs meet in some upcoming duel, I would choose Resurrections.
  • What in the world was... Xiu Xiu - Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl??? This song got bizarre at about 2:05 for about half a minute or so.
My choices are:
  1. EX-LYD - Ocean of Colors (part 2)
  2. Ujico*/Snail's House - Strawberry

Honorable mention:
  • Lena Raine - Reach for the Summit

David Wise & Kenji Yamamoto - Harvest Hazards
Dr. Pez - Normal Battle [Pokemon TCG](Band Cover)

Dr. Pez - Normal Battle [Pokemon TCG](Band Cover)
David Wise & Kenji Yamamoto - Harvest Hazards
EX-LYD - Ocean of Colors (part 2) (definitely the coolest song of the set)
David Wise & Kenji Yamamoto - Harvest Hazards (i guess? idk there were a lot of songs that were just ok, but i guess of those this is done the best)

also if you're gonna nominate joke rap you gotta go a lot harder than that

EDIT: honestly most of the songs are fine sorry for being cranky
1. Falcom Sound Team jdk - Sealed Time (okay, right off the bat, I'm already liking the sound design a ton lol; really looks like this arranger and I are in a similar wavelength when it comes to this sorta stuff huh, especially with the other track that just so happened to have been arranged by them, interesting stuff... but yeah, I might be just nominating this for the sound design alone, especially considering how, outside of the heavy violin usage, it's definitely very similar to the DAW arrangements I tend to make in particular, like I normally tend to spam the fuck out of impact and riser sounds and normally tend to be influenced by trance type of sounds in general myself, so I mean... fuck me right #smrpg{mlem})

2. Dr. Pez - Normal Battle [Pokemon TCG](Band Cover) (nice lol; I barely know anything about the music for this game, but I do know it's definitely more involved than most Gameboy music out there, and this is a nice jazzy remix of it too, so yeah, I'll vote for it I guess)

3. David Wise & Kenji Yamamoto - Harvest Hazards (was going to vote for this, but honestly on second thought this didn't wow me nearly as much as I would've hoped, plus there are better Tropical Freeze tracks that could've been chosen instead, so yeah, sorry :V)

4. Lena Raine - Reach for the Summit (well, it's definitely better than the other Celeste tracks chosen, but I still don't feel like it's quite there for a vote yet... which is a shame since I do think there should be much better options for Celeste music out there, and quite frankly it realy just feels like y'all are doing the soundtrack a huge disservice LOL)

5. Ujico*/Snail's House - Strawberry (yeah, sounds just about what you'd expect from them and their style lol; not too bad I suppose, but didn't wow me all that much sadly)

6. EX-LYD - Ocean of Colors (part 2) (same as above)

7. Suburban All-Stars - Some of the Real (ehh, I guess I did enjoy this more than I was expecting, but otherwise it wasn't too remarkable or whatever)

8. Xiu Xiu - Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl (almost ended up being somewhat good until that one part halfway through lol)

6. [Official] Celeste Original Soundtrack - 18 - Reach for the Summit: fine song, but like every Celeste track put up, IT NEEDS THE CONTEXT OF THE GAME TO HIT

7. Ocean of Colors (part 2): it sounds like all of the songs that sound like this.

8. Snail's House - Strawberry: bass line is alright but god damn this production is horrible. wow it only gets worse. one of those melodies that you accidentally write and dont tell anyone about.

bad set nothing wins go home kids

My third song is up! I hope it does better than last time. :)
Yoko Shimomura - Weapons Factory

Zhea Erose - Glitterdance
Now that I've started working, I won't be able to be as active as before. This is really very sad and depressing for me.

WORK IN PROGRESS
▬ good old days 4 (10/? level(s) completed)
▬ dumb 2 - strange levels in my notepad (22/62 level(s) completed)

By the way my Youtube channel
Set Boring Boring

1. SPELLLING - Boys at School: Definitely one of those "slow burn" types of songs that takes a while to get going, but overall I thought it was solid.
2. Funkadelic - Cosmic Slop: If I'm being real I didn't actually care for this song all that much...just more than everything else.
---------------
3. Red House Painters - Katy Song: Alright song, but it REALLY drags around the end. I feel like this song tries to do what Hey Jude by The Beatles does with its several minute long outro, but it's nowhere near catchy enough for that kind of thing to work.
4. DJ Screw - I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto: I've heard some DJ Screw songs that I liked, but I just couldn't get into this one
5. Yoko Shimomura - Weapons Factory: Good bassline but otherwise this is boring
6. Hideyuki Shimono and Akihito Okawa - Final Battle [Dolucky no Puzzle Tour '94]: I liked this for about 30 seconds...and then it got boring
7. Itoki Hana (feat. Toby Fox) - 74: It's boring!!!!!
8. Zhea Erose - Glitterdance: This might be my least favorite song of the entire tourney. It's just dreadful
Check out my WIP romhack!
Yoko Shimomura - Weapons Factory

Red House Painters - Katy Song

Red House Painters - Katy Song
SPELLLING - Boys at School

(I thought this set was gonna be called "AB")
This entire set seemed to be a bit more relaxed, with a few exceptions... and I had a surprisingly hard time picking out two, even from my own nomination.

Today's picks are as following...

  • SPELLLING - Boys at School
  • Hideyuki Shimono and Akihito Okawa - Final Battle [Dolucky no Puzzle Tour '94]

And here's the commentary...

  • I recognize Yoko Shimomura - Weapons Factory due to having actually beaten Super Mario RPG.
  • This set actually caused me to question whether to put in a vote for Hideyuki Shimono and Akihito Okawa - Final Battle [Dolucky no Puzzle Tour '94], which is the first of my nominations to appear. In hindsight? It works better within the context of the game itself, however I couldn't be convinced by anything else, mostly due to mediocrity.
DJ Screw - I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto | yes yes yes yes
SPELLLING - Boys at School | aoty soty

i dont really have the bones to review the rest of the songs. red house painters is funny though, fuck mark kozelek.

also replying to some early comments abt the song i posted, the cold neon by i am a lake of burning orchids. im also a fan of world's end girlfriend, and i'm gay
1. Spellling - Boys at School: Another album rec for sure. Spellling is one of the best artists of the decade without a doubt.

2. DJ Screw - I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto: I mean, come on. H-Town Hostile-Takeover.
