SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #1 2021 - end

MusicOther Contest/Event

BANDA MS - EL COLOR DE TUS OJOS - this is very chill
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears Of A Clown - good energy
---------------------------------------
André Rieu / Anthony Hopkins - And The Waltz goes on - there
MAN WITH A MISSION - My Hero - besides the led zepplin kashmir type sounds in the middle i found this quite bland. Update: this sucks
[Deltarune x Lethal League Blaze] - Ain't Nothing Like a Funky Buster (Mashup by +TEK) - okay.
【GUMI(40㍍)】 シリョクケンサ Eye Examination【オリジナル】 - -its nothing
The Sea Has Returned - ZeroRanger - siivagunner
kfaraday - Crack Her Pelvis - no

--------------------------------------------------
Mid review jam
THE NEUTRAL - 日曜日の太陽 - does nothing for me
Alexander "Skip" Spence - This time he has come - quality.
VOTE #1: Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown | This didn't really do anything particularly outstanding, but its funky backing track combined with fantastic vocals gave it a really good energy throughout.

VOTE #2: BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos | As a latino, I've heard tons of songs like this, and overall I wouldn't say this is the best of its type; but it's still a great song and has all the fundamentals of a good latino romantic song, such as great brass and very serene smooth vocals. Viva la revolución babyyy.

----

-eebrozgi - The Sea Has Returned (SiIvaGunner remix) | This is a really good remix of a great song in the style of a good game OST, but for a music tourney I feel like it's kinda scummy to submit a Siivagunner rip? I just can't bring myself to vote for it. It feels wrong. Just my opinion.

-Anthony Hopkins - And The Waltz Goes On | This is good music for sleeping and it's technically nice as classical music but it's not my thing.

-MAN WITH A MISSION - My Hero | I have history with this song; but it never really clicked with me, as with most of MWAM's discography. It's not bad but it's not really anything special or that it stands out for me.

-40mP feat. GUMI - Eye Examination | miku is better.

-Kfaraday - Crack Her Pelvis |

-+TEK - Ain't Nothing Like a Funky Buster | This is a mash-up. How do I even rank this. Also, ONCE AGAIN, Plusrek-Chan is a FANTASTIC artist that does fantastic music using old FM soundchips that is both impressive technically and extremely good, and instead of picking any of their actual songs you nominate a 1 minute mash-up he basically only did as a joke on his Soundcloud? Pitiful. I'm sure even Plusrek himself would be disappointed to see someone had such a reductive view of their music.

-----

MID-REVIEW JAM: THE NEUTRAL - 日曜日の太陽 | I don't have any major attachment to this song but the harmonica and instrumental combined with the vocals during the chorus specifically gives me a very nostalgic vibe, which is very intentional with the lyrics being about the singer reminiscing upon their friend who committed suicide while chilling at the park. I don't think it's anything amazing, but it's a nice relaxing song that gives me good vibes, and sometimes that's all I want in a song.

MID-REVIEW JAM: Alexander "Skip" Spence - This time he has come | This is interesting. I wouldn't say it's really my thing but the instrumentals are really bizarre in a really cool way, particularly the percussione, giving it a really good impression in your mind. Good song overall.
1. BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos: I’m out here on a hot summer day, wearing dickies pants and a white tee shirt drinking a Fanta chilling in a chair with a sombrero on my head. Vibes.

2. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown: Chill but why the clown crying he’s supposed to be funny

-----

3.40mP feat. GUMI - Eye Examination: I do not understand the lyrics but I like the sound.

4. Anthony Hopkins - And The Waltz Goes On: Who submitted the Nutcracker? What am I supposed to get out of this

5. MAN WITH A MISSION - My Hero: This is the whitest shit I’ve heard so far in this tournament.

6. Kfaraday - Crack Her Pelvis: If someone showed me this and told me they were gonna crack my pelvis I would pepper spray them and file a restraining order.

7. eebrozgi - The Sea Has Returned (SiIvaGunner remix): Uh oh this is actually a Megaman Zero 4 track haha you sure got me

8. +TEK - Ain't Nothing Like a Funky Buster: This was literally created as a joke. And you still submitted it.

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown
40mP feat. GUMI - Eye Examination

I guess?

Anthony Hopkins - And The Waltz Goes On
MAN WITH A MISSION - My Hero
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown (iconic)
Anthony Hopkins - And The Waltz Goes On (true legend, best wishes sir)

Very close to picking kfaraday. also this set truly was the tears of a soundclown
1. Kfaraday - Crack Her Pelvis (god yes, I fucking love keffie's music, and this is no exception haha; I actually remember hearing this before when the Melolignia2 album dropped, but it's been a while so I didn't remember much from it, outside of the instrumentation being much better than the stuff I would normally expect from her, which is likely because it's full production and not just chiptune-y sorta sounds; not that it's a bad thing mind you, and most of the time it definitely works with the kind of stuff she makes, but yeah, this isn't all that bad either :P)

2. 40mP feat. GUMI - Eye Examination (huh, I actually liked this more than I was expecting, liking the drum groove and choice of harmony here a lot, and some of the instrumentation choices are kind of fucked, like I wouldn't expect a marimba being used for this kind of music like, ever, but it doesn't sound out of place at all lol; really need to explore this kinda music more at one point, seems like there's a ton of cool shit in the genre that might be fun to go through honestly)

3. BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos (not too bad I suppose, I was definitely expecting something more akin to cumbia or reggaeton, but it didn't end up being that, and that was kinda cool; otherwise tho, ehh, I dunno if I like it all that much honestly, it's fine, but not much more than that sadly)

4. eebrozgi - The Sea Has Returned (SiIvaGunner remix) (well, I do like both Esperanto and Awakening Will, and this rip is actually fairly well done, but yeah, it isn't too remarkable otherwise I guess)

5. MAN WITH A MISSION - My Hero (I'll be honest, both the title and the intro caught me completely off guard here, like how in the heck I was supposed to know it would be a fuckin' J-pop/rock? song from all that??? either way, not too bad I guess)

6. +TEK - Ain't Nothing Like a Funky Buster (not a bad mashup, but honestly why you picked something like this over, like, all of the other stuff +TEK makes is just beyond me LMAO)

7. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown (didn't think too much about this one)

8. Anthony Hopkins - And The Waltz Goes On (didn't think too much about this one, also it's boring as hell)
Layout by Mathos
40mP feat. GUMI - Eye Examination - I hold this song dear to my heart.
eebrozgi - The Sea Has Returned (SiIvaGunner remix) Morally this feels like a silly nomination... but I like both ZeroRanger's music and Esperanto, so...

Kfaraday - Crack Her Pelvis This is so cool and trippy, I love all the directions this song goes!
Anthony Hopkins - And The Waltz Goes On - Sounds very intriguing, and sets its mood well. I like strings, and they're used very well here.
MAN WITH A MISSION - My Hero I thought I didn't vibe with this at first, but it definitely grew on me as I listened. There's still a couple of sections that I'm eh about, but the chorus around 1:00 is really nice, especially the "hit me with the drums" refrain.
+TEK - Ain't Nothing Like a Funky Buster - Sounds like someone Sonic CD-ified Undertale. It gets a bit repetitive to listen to.
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown Sounds like something that would play in a really cheesy movie. Not bad, it's upbeat enough to be enjoyable. The intro sounds like the SM3DW circus music lol.
BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos - Too slow and mellow for my taste. I feel like it doesn't go anywhere, it's very much an "it is what it is" kind of song. The melody's cute though.

MY TWO CHOICES:

1. ANTHONY HOPKINS - AND THE WALTZ GOES ON: Oh My Gosh, Anthony Hopkins made such a masterpiece and André Rieu is such a prodigious, talented violinist and orchestra conductor (I admire him so much). It has an interesting story:
Hopkins composed this waltz five decades before listening it for the first time musicalized by André Rieu.

2. MAN WITH A MISSION - MY HERO

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
3. eebrozgi - The Sea Has Returned (SiIvaGunner remix): Gorgeous and with an energetic rhythm. I remember having heard that nice melody, which is from Mega Man Zero 4, in New Super Mario World 2: Around The World.
4. 40mP feat. GUMI - Eye Examination: Great and cool. It gives me some Dance Dance Revolution A vibes.
5. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown

AND THE OTHER SONGS:
6. BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos
7. +TEK - Ain't Nothing Like a Funky Buster
8. Kfaraday - Crack Her Pelvis

My choices are:
  1. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears of a Clown
(This is the REAL winner of this set. No one can stop this.)
  2. BANDA MS - El Color de Tus Ojos
    (Eh?)

Honorable mention:
  • Anthony Hopkins - And The Waltz Goes On
(I would've give much respects to this guy, though. 🙇‍♂️🙏)
  • +TEK - Ain't Nothing Like a Funky Buster
    (Incredible mashup.)
  • eebrozgi - The Sea Has Returned (SiIvaGunner remix)
    (WHAT AM I LISTENING FOOOOOR?!?!?!)

Now that I've started working, I won't be able to be as active as before. This is really very sad and depressing for me.

WORK IN PROGRESS
▬ good old days 4 (10/? level(s) completed)
▬ dumb 2 - strange levels in my notepad (22/62 level(s) completed)
----------
By the way my Youtube channel
1. Dr. Pez - Normal Battle [Pokemon TCG] (Band Cover): I really liked this. Never heard the original song, but this guy seems very talented; if I didn't know any better, I'd think this was an original composition of his.
2. EX-LYD - Ocean of Colors (Part 2): This one was good. Had a hard time picking between it and #3, but I feel like this is a song I would actually come back to
---------------
3. Suburban All-Stars - Some of the Real: I actually got a lot of enjoyment out of this. The beat is really catchy, and the lyrics remind me of those rappers whose music is joke-y and serious at the same time (Zack Fox and Yung Gravy come to mind here)
4. Falcom Sound Team jdk - Sealed Time: It's Fine
5. Lena Raine - Reach for the Summit: This is at least better than Celeste's boring contextless piano songs that were in earlier sets, but still...I haven't listened to that much of Celeste's soundtrack, but it HAS to be better than this, right? I mean, some of the songs I've heard from it are better than all of the ones in this tourney. One of my friends made the point that a lot of the nominations in this tourney are from sources with great soundtracks or from very talented composers, but they just pick the worst possible songs from them (at least for a music tournament); I feel like the selection of Celeste songs here kinda proves that, at least in my opinion.
6. Xiu Xiu - Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl: I remember there being another song by Xiu Xiu in one of the early sets; this one is definitely much better than the other one. The song itself is whatever, but I REALLY don't like the guy's singing voice. Also that part at 2:06 single-handedly knocked this down a few spots
7. Ujico*/Snail's House - Strawberry: Boring, felt way longer than it actually was
8. David Wise & Kenji Yamamoto - Harvest Hazards: Same as #7 except worse
Check out my WIP romhack!
Lena Raine - Reach for the Summit

5. EX-LYD - Ocean of Colors (part 2)
6. Ujico*/Snail's House - Strawberry
7. Suburban All-Stars - Some of the Real
8. Xiu Xiu - Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl

VGM really won out this round.
1. EX-LYD - Ocean of Colors (part 2): I had fun listening to this.

2. Lena Raine - Reach for the Summit: I've gotta play this game.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ujico*/Snail's House - Strawberry: It was alright.

David Wise & Kenji Yamamoto - Harvest Hazards: This was pleasant to listen to if anything.

Dr. Pez - Normal Battle [Pokemon TCG](Band Cover): This is great.

Falcom Sound Team jdk - Sealed Time: The guitar and strings in this were cool.

Xiu Xiu - Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl: Not much to say about this one.

Suburban All-Stars - Some of the Real: Not my type of music.
