SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #1 2021 - end

MusicOther Contest/Event

VOTE #1: Gérard Calvi - Obélix Samba | This song grabbed me unexpectedly; this song is awesome. The samba is absolutely funky and it just carries a really great energy throughout.

VOTE #2: Yoshimi Kudo & Yuzo Koshiro - Labyrinth III & Labyrinth IV [Super Arrange] | Funky

-----

-David Glen Eisley - Sweet Victory | Used to bust nuts back in high school, call me dicko mode (uh). My mood may change quickly, I'm in fickle mode (yeah).

-Namie Amuro feat. Hatsune Miku - B who I want 2 B (The song is also on Spotify if Vimeo doesn't work. The only acceptable alternative on Youtube is a one minute portion of the song here.) | If you like 1000 Gecs you'll like this one but I don't

-m.i.a. - teqkilla | I don't know how to feel about this song. It does some interesting stuff but besides the really really cool siren synth that gets all warbly and wild near the end it just did nothing for me and I just kinda left it not feeling, uh, anything. Not to mention I felt like it dragged on for way too long without doing really anything.

-Dominic Ninmark - Crystal Caverns (Crystal Rafflar's Stage) | Funky.

----

MID-REVIEW JAM: Kate Bush - Cloudbusting | I came in like halfway through and thought it was alright, but nothing special; it kind of felt like there was a lot of empty space with nothing happening.
Michael Oakley - Control

Dominic Ninmark - Crystal Caverns (Crystal Rafflar's Stage)
Now that I've started working, I won't be able to be as active as before. This is really very sad and depressing for me.

Yoshimi Kudo & Yuzo Koshiro - Labyrinth III & Labyrinth IV [Super Arrange]

This set surprised me for sure. I wasn't really expecting to vote for either of these, but something about the Samba's soft groove from a bygone era captivated me, and while I wasn't sold on Labyrinth at first the jazzier part in the second half won me over. Control was a really good contender, though, and Crystal Caverns was pretty solid too. And of course, I gotta respect the Sweet Victory pick for it's iconic value.

Yoshimi Kudo & Yuzo Koshiro - Labyrinth III & Labyrinth IV [Super Arrange]

Honestly wasn't super into any songs this round, so going with the two i thought were the most interesting. Also thank you KFF and sincx for finding the alternate link from spotify.
You're welcome. I went hunting mostly because I wasn't interested in the snippet on YouTube (though I did a quick check to make sure it was correct) and I wasn't interested in making the account for Spotify. I was only interested in the music (and a full piece of music at that), so the quality of the music video was not my concern. Ended up with a Vimeo link, but it was fine by me.

This was the weakest set we've had in quite a while, at least in my opinion.

1. Fearofdark - Exit Plan: I'm generally not super into Fearofdark's music, but this song is really cool.
2. Passport - Dreamware: This one's pretty good.
---------------
3. Paul Hardcastle - Killing Machines: At least this song is interesting...more than I can say about most of these other ones :V
4. Toshihiko Horiyama - Jet Stingray Stage: Mega Man X4, X5, and X6 all have some of my favorite game soundtracks, but I feel like you can do MUCH better than this song. Even just in X4, you have Sky Lagoon (X), Slash Beast, Split Mushroom, Storm Owl, Cyber Peacock, even the boss theme...all far better songs than this, at least in my opinion. This song's okay, but I think the X series has much more to offer.
5. Kenji Ito - Grassland (The Wind and One Who Presses Forward): This one's alright, I guess
6. Yukihiro Jindo - The Boy Who Had Wings: Kinda bland. I feel like I've heard tons of songs that sound exactly like this.
7. Ryota Nakano - It's so beautiful: The vocals
8. Dennibro - 9+10=21 [Trap Remix]: sigh
Check out my WIP romhack!
ranked from best to worst

-Exit Plan
easily my favorite this set, such a good beat

-Passport
this one is funky and so nice on the ears

-Boy Who Had Wings
fucking awesome, and not even my favorite theme in felghana or my favorite rendition of it

-Killing Machine
not bad, not my favorite song ever but a nice tune

-Jet Stingray Stage
It's the worst song in x4 but still great, goes to show how solid that game's ost really is but definitely not what I would have gone with.

-The Wind and One Who Presses Forward
I have no strong feelings one way or the other

-ryota - It's so beautiful
It's boring

-9+10=21
waste of my time
Fearofdark - Exit Plan
Toshihiko Horiyama - Jet Stingray Stage

List Soundtrack - List Hacks

Mega Man X3 OSTs
1. Fearofdark - Exit Plan
2. Passport - Dreamware

3. Kenji Ito - Grassland (The Wind and One Who Presses Forward)
4. Yukihiro Jindo - The Boy Who Had Wings
5. Toshihiko Horiyama - Jet Stingray Stage
6. Paul Hardcastle - Killing Machines
7. Ryota Nakano - It's so beautiful
8. Dennibro - 9+10=21 [Trap Remix]

Not really into this set, but the top few are pretty nice.
Here are my picks for this round...
  • Toshihiko Horiyama - Jet Stingray Stage
  • Fearofdark - Exit Plan

And some commentary...
  • I ended up picking two out of a single group. Kenji Ito - Grassland (The Wind and One Who Presses Forward) was defeated by at least one song out of that group, and I decided not to qualify the other three that weren't in the group due to lack of interest. Of the four remaining, Toshihiko Horiyama - Jet Stingray Stage defeats Yukihiro Jindo - The Boy Who Had Wings and Ryota Nakano - It's so beautiful (mainly because of similar execution between these two and a faster tempo on the one I picked). Fearofdark - Exit Plan gets a pass for somewhat more unique instrumentation in its execution.
Kenji Ito - Grassland (The Wind and One Who Presses Forward) | this is actually mega cute, im very picky when it comes to this kinda music but this is pretty evocative of a very pretty scene.
Passport - Dreamware | oh this is so good what the hell. i have not heard of these people before and i am looking forward to checking out more.

Toshihiko Horiyama - Jet Stingray Stage | really don't care about this tbh
Dennibro - 9+10=21 [Trap Remix] | terrible. not even good trap.
Ryota Nakano - It's so beautiful | it's anime as fuck and yet i bopped the whole time
Paul Hardcastle - Killing Machines | holy shit bionicles music. this is actually a funky as fuck jam.
Yukihiro Jindo - The Boy Who Had Wings | idk it's okay, i don't have much to say particularly about this track
Fearofdark - Exit Plan | it's chiptune! it's cute, but nothing too striking.
Kenji Ito - Grassland (The Wind and One Who Presses Forward)
Toshihiko Horiyama - Jet Stingray Stage
