Hideki Asanaka - Esaka? (Acid Mix)

Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
Now that I've started working, I won't be able to be as active as before. This is really very sad and depressing for me.

Oh yes. This is some lovely big-band stuff. I'll surely be sharing this one with my dad; I got my taste for big-band jazz from him, as he used to play tenor sax in one when I was young. We can vibe real well to stuff like this. This even sounds like something I could easily hear him playing hahaha

Brendan Byrnes - Operator
Didn't expect anyone else to nominate microtonal music #fim{8)} just intonation scales have always been a little bit hit-or-miss for me, though especially so in composing with them myself, but I didn't expect anything other than Brendan nailing it. This album's been sitting in my to-check-out queue for a few years now, glad this gave me the opportunity to listen to it. I'll say, I easily prefer Sevish's remix (which isn't surprising, given that I'm such a Sevish fanboy), and the vocals took a little getting used to, but the track as a whole is absolutely my jam.

I totally knew I'd be seeing at least one comment on this track saying "out of tune" hahahaha, that's unfortunately just what you get when equal temperament is so universally prevalent in Western music. Also because of this, I'm not surprised that it can be off-putting for some; microtonal music is an acquired taste for sure. At least I'm excited to see that it hasn't put off too many people! I have hope for my microtonal nomination later down the line.

Obnoxious vocal samples, dumb and unrelenting composition, pummeling and muffled kicks with sizzly snares and hoover synths overlaid on them, never-ending dusty rave stabs, Sex pervert of a silence [TRUE FINAL BOSS] truly has all the oldschool hardcore tropes. I almost put in a vote for this one, but my top 2 for this set is unshakeable.

Anesthetize sounds like a track that I would've loved if I grew up with it like I did with Opeth's music. Despite having known about the Tree for a decade or so, I never actually took the time to check them out. I love the composition, but the vocals, hit-or-miss as ever for me, don't do it for me. Maybe this'll get me to check them out some more though... Shoutout to the part at 6:17 getting me going real well.

I would've liked Double if its mixing wasn't so abhorrent. I do think it's partially to blame on the sound quality of the video, but only in very small part. I think the vocals are pretty cool, even though they're not really my preferred style.

Brave caught me off-guard, purely because it's released on Spinnin' Records. So they release D&B now? I would've been into that if they weren't Spinnin', cause they've once again proven to me that they're all about the generic stuff. Good mixing and all, clap clap you did a good job, but there's no soul to the track. If you're into that, all good, but it's a hard pass for me.

Andrew Neu - Slipstream
Brendan Byrnes - Operator

It was a very tight battle between Operator and Anesthetize, but Operator's tuning and the chords that came from that won me over in the end. And naturally I'm picking Slipstream, that bari sax line will never get old, not to mention the stellar solos and solis throughout all tied together with a tight chord progression.

R.E.M. - Find The River
Andrew Neu - Slipstream
Andrew Neu - Slipstream
R.E.M. - Find the River

Pretty good set overall, basically just based on taste. Operator was a close third but I found it a little too abrasive.
1. Brendan Byrnes - Operator (sound design is pretty cool, and unlike most of what I seen of microtonal music it actually sounds like a song that just has cool microtonal sounding bits on them instead of just being a microtonal song for the sake of it... yeah, I'm feeling this one for sure lmao)

2. Andrew Neu - Slipstream (pretty cool as well, like some of the chord changes a lot, and although it isn't too particularly impressive, it does it's job well enough, and in general the big band sound is one I'm into, so yeah, pretty nice shit I guess :P)

3. Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (ngl, I almost wanted to nominate this, but it's just far too long for it's own good, and in general just meanders a lot as a result; if it was maybe compressed to like, 5 minutes, I probably would have submitted this, but as it stands... yeah, kind of a shame :V)

4. Kou Hayashi - Sex pervert of a silence [TRUE FINAL BOSS] (also wanted to nominate this, but honestly it's just far too abrasive and repetitive for me to truly enjoy, even if it's a fairly cool sound, which is funny because this also reminded me of the Hard BGM tracks from Super Drift Out and I have pretty much the same exact opinion over them as well LOL)

5. Hideki Asanaka - Esaka? (Acid Mix) (it's cool, but kind of feels a bit monotonous with it's lackluster melody and there just not having enough things going on in general to warrant a vote sadly)

6. R.E.M. - Find The River (it's fine I guess. though it just sounds like something my dad or sister would listen to, and a lot of the stuff they listen to also tend to be in that "meh" sorta territory, so yeah, it's definitely not my thing lmao)

7. Sikdope x Dux n Bass - Brave (kinda boring and fairly formulaic modern DnB sounding stuff I suppose... certainly not good enough for a vote for me)

8. Black Bomb A - Double (really don't know what to feel about this one honestly... like, what kind of feeling or vibe does this even want to have??? like, it either sounds like a softer sounding pop punk song or a more brutal sounding metal song, and yet it just tries to be both and just... utterly fails at both because of it; just all around a very frustrating song to listen to for me, and that's certainly not a good thing at all)

Preliminary Round: Set Q
Hideki Okugawa - Twilight (Ibuki's Theme)
duuzu - Blow My Speakers Up
Orange Range - Monkey Magic
ZUN - Interdimensional Voyage of a Ghostly Passenger Ship
MarStarBro - VS Sonic.exe (Endless)
Hiroki Kikuta - Rabite Forest (Powell)
MGMT - Siberian Breaks
Chuck Salamone & Mason Lindroth - Xeno Arcadia

----------------

I feel like this is the sequel artist set. #wario{-_-?}
Did you know that 4 of the 5 letters in the word queue are silent? I just thought that was interesting

1. Chuck Salamone & Mason Lindroth - Xeno Arcadia: REALLY good. I actually added this to my playlist; definitely one of the strongest VGM nominations in this tourney so far.
2. MGMT - Siberian Breaks: I've heard a few MGMT songs across both this tourney and the previous one, and I honestly haven't been impressed by any of them. This song, though? I really enjoyed it. The whole thing is very engaging, and I never felt bored while listening to it despite how long it is.
---------------
3. Hiroki Kikuta - Rabite Forest (Powell): I KNOW I've heard this song in a hack at some point, and it's gonna bother me not remembering which one. Also good song
4. ZUN - Interdimensional Voyage of a Ghostly Passenger Ship: I'm generally not a huge fan of Touhou music, but this song's pretty good.
5. MarStarBro - VS Sonic.exe (Endless): I generally find Friday Night Funkin's songs annoying and unpleasant to listen to, but this song is honestly pretty solid for a...FNF and Sonic.EXE mashup???
6. Hideki Okugawa - Twilight (Ibuki's Theme): Not a bad song at all. Nice and chill.
7. duuzu - Blow My Speakers Up: Alright song, but I've heard far better mashups that are similar to this (Pop Culture by Madeon, for example).
8. Orange Range - Monkey Magic: This got old VERY quickly.

This was a really strong set. Almost every song here fell under "pretty good", which doesn't happen often. I had a genuinely hard time picking just 2 songs.
Check out my WIP romhack!

6. Hideki Okugawa - Twilight (Ibuki's Theme)
7. ZUN - Interdimensional Voyage of a Ghostly Passenger Ship
8. Orange Range - Monkey Magic

Most competitive set I've ever seen. Enjoyed every song to some capacity; picking the top ranks was very difficult.
twilight - very good and powerful energy
monkey magic - this sounds like one of those oompa loompa interlude songs and i kind of love it ngl. especially in the second half

-

powell - really nice arrange
xeno arcaida - good, but a bit too slow and drawn out

blow my speakers up - it's something
siberian breaks - they should have just deleted the first 10 minutes, since the last 2 minutes are actually good
vs sonic.exe - this just sounds like every other fnf song. blah
interdimensional blah - what the fuck are these drum samples and why are they so loud
soundcloud / bandcamp / twitter / buy/stream my EP / buy my touhou music / buy my NEW album!!!

MGMT - Siberian Breaks
Hiroki Kikuta - Rabite Forest (Powell)

This was a really tough set; a lot of good ones, but none of them really stood out over the other. I will say that Xeno Arcadia was also close to being my pick, and I slightly considered the Touhou song, but for whatever reason I went with these two over those. It was certainly unexpected to have both SiIvagunner content and FNF-mod music in one set, that's for sure.
