SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #1 2021 - end

MusicOther Contest/Event

flashygoodness - Rivals Theme (PC-98 Remix) I am a sucker for PC-98... This song is also nice and bouncy and works really well in FM synth.
MGMT - Me and Michael - There's just something about the synthiness of this song that I love, and I actually like the lyrics themselves as well. The chorus also slaps.

(Honorable Mention) Yosuke Yasui - STELLAR LIGHT ESCHATOS good. Love the instrumentation here. I love how the song picks up.
Oblique Occasions - protoculture Very cute and chill.
Reasoner - The Last Flight I feel like I like the piano section more than the rest, though it's all very cute. Very emotional. Definitely picks up as it goes along.
Amy Winehouse - Me & Mr Jones Eh. Fine, but I vibe so much more with the others.
Phineas Newborn Jr. Trio - A Walkin' Thing Jazzy, and I like the sense of mystery this has.
Charles Ives - They Are There! I don't vibe with any of this, sorry.

Very tough choices to make, I'd say I really love the top 4 or 5 of my picks a lot, and I especially had trouble choosing between the top 3.

1. Reasoner - The Last Flight - This is very grand and epic, especially once the song picks up. The chords are fantastic, the piano is super enjoyable to my ears. Very nice!
2. Oblique Occasions - protoculture - This sounds like something C418 would compose, except for maybe the percussion, but it's whatever. I dig the calm atmosphere being created by the instrumentation. Sounds like nature. Now if only weather channels would use this song in the backgrounds some more XD

3. Phineas Newborn Jr. Trio - A Walkin' Thing - Man, I can vibe to mellow jazz songs like this one honestly, but ugh... I reeeeeeally wish there was some horns or brass in this song. something extra would've been so cool.
4. Yosuke Yasui - STELLAR LIGHT - Pretty cool. The bass in this reminds me of the Sega Genesis, which had songs that used similar instrumentation.
5. flashygoodness - Rivals Theme (PC-98 Remix) - This is a good tracker piece (from the sounds of it at least), but it's not particularly ambitious to me.
6. MGMT - Me and Michael - I'm not sure how to describe this. It's... got an emotional vibe somewhere... I think. I'm not too fond of the echoey instrumentation and vocals allover overpowering the whole piece. But at least the bass sounds nice to me.
7. Amy Winehouse - Me & Mr Jones - Hoh boy, this is not my kind of song. The pacing is slow and the vocals parts aren't appealing to me.
8. Charles Ives - They Are There! - You know, I feel bad for putting this song at the bottom. This song might have once been good back in the day, and the singer sounded like they were having fun with all this, buuuuuut... I just can't rank this song above any of the others. Legit, it sounds like something a child could preform, and it's just a mess.

I'm quite glad that some of the older stuff... much older stuff at that, is also joining in the competition.

Here are my picks, as per the usual...

  • Reasoner - The Last Flight
  • Amy Winehouse - Me & Mr Jones

And then, the sometimes but not always present commentary:
  • Amy Winehouse - Me & Mr Jones reminded me of The Platters - Only You in terms of execution... except for the lyrics. Yes, considering I just picked this one, I do have a bit of a soft side for the classics at times.
1. Yosuke Yasui - STELLAR LIGHT (ngl, for some reason I thought Silver Lining was what got nominated instead, and was even going to say that I would've preferred the Special Arrange version by Ryo Yonemitsu over the original... but it ended up being a different Eschatos song instead LOL; I actually like Stellar Light a lot more than Silver Lining tho, without counting the arranged version, so this ended up being a much easier pick than I expected. nice >:])

2. Oblique Occasions - protoculture (oh yeah, I can vibe to this for sure lol; nice and calming, and all around just very easy to get lost in, pretty cool stuff)

3. flashygoodness - Rivals Theme (PC-98 Remix) (nice chiptune PC-98 inspired FM thing. unfortunately, it isn't the only good FM synthesis based song in this round, and sadly that one is way better, so, yeah.)

4. Phineas Newborn Jr. Trio - A Walkin' Thing (not too bad I suppose. jazz normally tends to be pretty cool anyway, but otherwise it doesn't have much goin' with it to vote for sadly)

5. MGMT - Me and Michael (not too bad as well, and 80s sounding synths are cool and good, but yeah, like the above, it just isn't interesting enough to vote for)

6. Amy Winehouse - Me & Mr Jones (thank god this isn't one of the Amy Winehouse songs that pop up on the radio for millions of times around here lmao; I actually enjoyed this one a lot more than I was expecting to, especially the swearing in the lyrics, which kinda caught me off guard, but since this is also a fairly basic pop song I can only give it so much sadly :V)

7. Reasoner - The Last Flight (it's fine. not much else to say here)

8. Charles Ives - They Are There! (????????????????????)

----------------

nice to see voting pick up again! we've already gone through half the alphabet, even though we're not even halfway done with the preliminary round #fim{o_O}
1. Tsuneo Imahori - Stand Proud
2. Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons (Live Scenes From New York version)

3. Opeth - Benighted
4. Motoi Sakuraba - Iconoclasm
5. Kevin MacLeod - Sneaky Snitch
6. Joe Jackson - I'm The Man
7. Frank Klepacki - Hell March 2
8. DJ Sound - One Wit A Trigga Two Wit A Bad Freak Bitch

Chaotic but fun set. Also a long song actually made my top 2.
1. Opeth - Benighted: The finger acoustic guitar is marvelous. The vocals are somber and only semi-present. Creating a tune that is spacious and withdrawn. I did like the change of pace at the end too with the added electric guitar and drums.

2. Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons (Live Scenes From New York version): I need to find a moment to set aside to listen to this entire tune. Something tells me it'll be worth it. Just from the few minutes of it I did listen to I can tell it's a great composition and pretty much needs to be a winner out of sheer musicality.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kevin MacLeod - Sneaky Snitch: Simple, yet elegant. Sparse instrumentation and calming melody make this an enjoyable little tune in my book.

Motoi Sakuraba - Iconoclasm: The combined guitar and keyboard synth in this song sound really cool. The song maintains its energy throughout, which kept me hooked the entire time.

DJ Sound - One Wit A Trigga Two Wit A Bad Freak Bitch: Not my kind of music. Was never a huge rap fan.

Joe Jackson - I'm The Man: The guitar and drum sound in this song just feel like the 70s. I like.

Frank Klepacki - Hell March 2: I like the heavy guitars in this. That and the voice sounds add a nice effect. This song definitely sounds like it came out of a game called Command & Conquer.

Tsuneo Imahori - Stand Proud: Putting horns in your song will automatically make me like it. And this song is a perfect example of a song with plenty of horn, which I like a whole lot. It feels tense and anxious, but also somehow triumphant. It puts me into the shoes of the protagonist of this manga.

This truly is The Chaos Set

1. DJ Sound - One Wit A Trigga Two Wit A Bad Freak Bitch: I was fully, and I mean FULLY expecting to absolutely hate this song, but it's honestly pretty good. I especially like the parts of Tell Me Something Good that are dispersed throughout. The part at the end is also 👌
2. Opeth - Benighted: This song's good but it's also one of those that doesn't really go anywhere until like 75% through the song
---------------
3. Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons (Live Scenes From New York version): This is honestly pretty great for a song this long; it just takes FOREVER to get going. Either way, I really enjoyed listening to it (although most of the really interesting parts are around the middle). Would've been my #2 pick, but I decided against that on account of how long it is; it's not something I would go out of my way to listen to again.
4. Frank Klepacki - Hell March 2: Surprisingly background-y considering the type of song this is. Still, it's not bad.
5. Tsuneo Imahori - Stand Proud: Also surprisingly background-y considering the type of song this is, but slightly more bad.
6. Joe Jackson - I'm The Man: Not the worst thing ever, but way too repetitive.
7. Motoi Sakuraba - Iconoclasm: Not interesting in the slightest.
8. Kevin MacLeod - Sneaky Snitch: On one hand, I now know the name of this song. On the other hand bro come on are you serious
Check out my WIP romhack!
1. Opeth - Benighted: i konw i know, cop out voting for my own track. but let me say this, for my 2020 spotify listens, outside of the 60-70 listens for Lantlos' Melting Sun album, this track was #2 between it. 60+ listens last year. slaps.

2. DJ Sound - One Wit a Trigga Two Wit a Bad Freak Bitch: entering the codeine zone

------------------------------------------------------

3. A Change of Seasons (Live at Roseland Ballroom, New York City, NY, 8/30/2000): more like simp-sons.

4. Hell March 2: great first minute, kind of just ended up going nowhere.

5. Joe Jackson "I'm The Man": wouldnt fly during man time. fine otherwise.

6. Hajime no Ippo Soundtrack - Stand Proud: just nominate the Rocky theme. id pop for that.

7. Baten Kaitos Origins OST - Iconoclasm: anime

8. Sneaky Snitch (Kevin MacLeod) - Gaming Background Music (HD): funny youtube g-mod song are you (DJ) Screwing me

Pre-review jam

T Rock - Mr. Big Man: we on man time :O#smrpg{roar}#smrpg{:D}

Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons (Live Scenes From New York version)
Tsuneo Imahori - Stand Proud

Benighted was also pretty good, and it was very entertaining to stumble across Sneaky Snitch, though I can't hand it the win over these two. I didn't think I'd like the Dream Theater tune as much as I did due to it being so long for a rock song but it really grew on me over the course of the listen. And I can't help but really feel the sense of accomplishment and overcoming a peak in Stand Proud, and the orchestration with the brass-band feel really just sells the vibe of the fighting spirit. (Am I biased because I nominated it? Yeah, probably.)

My picks are as following...
  • Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons (Live Scenes From New York version)

Opeth - Benighted
Something truly spectacular would've had to come on to topple this one for me. Benighted is a regular track in my playlists, from the first band that I've ever gotten properly addicted to, at age 6 or 7. Mikael's gotten better at clean vocals since then, but oh my gosh this is the purest loner-times vibe for me and I thank whoever nominated this. You may win.

What came and distorted your sight...

Frank Klepacki - Hell March 2
I so love Klepacki's music. Even though it's my least favourite rendition of the Hell March in the trilogy, it still slams and easily made the cut for me.

Easy but wonderful selection this set, for me. I'll say though, I'm The Man surprised me with how much I liked it. I usually don't care for anything in the genre.

A Change Of Seasons sounded great, and I definitely loved the rhythmically-challenging bits, but the long-windedness, the synthiness, the particular blend of vocals and the super annoying recording quality made it wear me down quite a bit. I swear I do love prog. metal, but Dream Theater's always been hit or miss for me, and this was one of many missers.

Iconoclasm has a nice sound, but felt a bit dime-a-dozen to me, so I got bored halfway through, in spite of its already short length.
