SMWCentral Official Annual Music Tourney #1 2021 - end

MusicOther Contest/Event

Winners:
Lucius - Wildewoman (good pop song, reminded me of that Boards of Canada mixtape)
Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings (magnificient)

Honorable mentions:
Sacha Collisson - Symphony Number Vibe
Luis Miguel - Ahora te puedes marchar
Jun Chikuma and Hirohiko Fukuda - Stage 5, Electro

I'm a sucker for Bomberman music but the competition was just so fierce.
Luis Miguel was a nice callback to the 80s or 90s.
Symphony Number Vibe was a good idea and made me think of Igorrr, but the execution was a bit disappointing imo.
****
Also I'm curious why most comments about my choice, Yini Bo, mentioned how they didn't think they would like it but it finally was ok. Maybe they had got bad vibes from the title of the song? ahah.
YES

Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings
appealing

msx - time tripping
sonic cd vibes (mostly because of that one part with lyrics)

Sacha Collisson - Symphony Number Vibe

Inkie - Oblivion
this is extremely in the background

Lucius - Wildewoman
i wanted this to end from the moment it began

György Ligeti and The King's Singers - The Alphabet
this makes me incredibly incredibly uncomfortable, and then incredibly incredibly bored
time tripper - now this is good shit
soaring wings - not my favorite hamauzu or even unlimited saga song by a long shot but still good

-

ahora te puedes marchar - everyone in this music video looks like theyre about to collapse from a drug overdose. that said, as an obvious george michael clone, it aint bad
stage5-electro - pretty good by snes standards

the alphabet - this is probably interesting musically but its not something i would really listen to ever
oblivion - decent sound design but doesnt really go anywhere
symphony number vibe - lolk
wildewoman - nothing i like about this one whatsoever. its like a mashup of the worst of pop music

List Soundtrack - List Hacks

Mega Man X3 OSTs
1. Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings
2. Luis Miguel - Ahora te puedes marchar

3. msx - time tripping
4. Jun Chikuma and Hirohiko Fukuda - Stage 5, Electro
5. Sacha Collisson - Symphony Number Vibe
6. Lucius - Wildewoman
7. Inkie - Oblivion
8. György Ligeti and The King's Singers - The Alphabet

Not really vibing with this set but it's fine.
This set was...interesting, to say the least. I feel like a lot of people will disagree with my picks this time around.

1. msx - time tripping: This one's really good. Not much to say about it other than the fact that it's funky.
2. György Ligeti and The King's Singers - The Alphabet: Honestly? I actually really liked this. The ambiance reminds me of Vichnaya Pamyat from last year's tourney, which I also really liked. The only issue with this song in particular is that it takes a bit too long to get going.
---------------
3. Jun Chikuma and Hirohiko Fukuda - Stage 5, Electro: Pretty good song, just not as interesting as the Top 2.
4. Sacha Collisson - Symphony Number Vibe: Complete guilty pleasure music. I'd make a Geometry Dash level with this.
5. Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings: Not a bad song, but it's not super amazing or anything. Still, it was nice to listen to.
6. Luis Miguel - Ahora te puedes marchar: I didn't like this one at all at first. It gets a lot better when the background chorus comes in.
7. Lucius - Wildewoman: This is definitely a song that gets better as it goes on, but as a whole it's just okay at best. The clucking sounds in the background are obnoxious.
8. Inkie - Oblivion: I wanted to like this song a lot more than I ultimately did, but the slightly off-rhythm "DOOM DOOM DOOM DOOM DOOM DOOM" sound that persists throughout most of the song got REALLY annoying (and then off-rhythm strings or something got introduced towards the end, which was even more annoying).
Check out my WIP romhack!
msx - time tripping
Luis Miguel - Ahora te puedes marchar
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
msx - time tripping (only song i really cared for)
Luis Miguel - Ahora te puedes marchar (it's generic 80s pop but i'd still rather take that than bog-standard vgm/bgm or gimmick songs)
György Ligeti and The King's Singers - The Alphabet (obv)
Lucius - Wildewoman
My picks are as following...
  • Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings
  • Luis Miguel - Ahora te puedes marchar

And some commentary...
  • Jun Chikuma and Hirohiko Fukuda - Stage 5, Electro is our first SNES contender, from Super Bomberman 5! I'll be eagerly awaiting the older consoles coming on down in the competition.
  • Sacha Collisson - Symphony Number Vibe seemed to be a merger of the other two groups of songs that I've been sorting out on my end. Unfortunately, it's ultimately defeated by both of them (one of which I ultimately decided didn't make the cut).
  • György Ligeti and The King's Singers - The Alphabet is a very minimalistic approach to music, just consisting of the voices. Also, I didn't actually realize they were singing the letters of the English alphabet!
  • One of the groups made the cut... specifically, Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings defeated Lucius - Wildewoman. The last three songs that I did not mention previously were part of the other group that ended up getting entirely cut from my selection in the long run.
msx - time tripping
Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings
my rankings are

1. soaring wings

2. puedes marchar

and as for rhe rest
time tripper, vibe, oblivion, wildewoman, alphabet, electro

not as fun a round, gotta be honest, some of these songs were just boring
Yet another fantastic set where I loved every song and felt guilty about the ones that I ranked lower than the others.

Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings
György Ligeti and The King's Singers - The Alphabet

Sacha Collisson - Symphony Number Vibe
msx - time tripping
Lucius - Wildewoman
Inkie - Oblivion
Jun Chikuma and Hirohiko Fukuda - Stage 5, Electro
Luis Miguel - Ahora te puedes marchar

Now that I've started working, I won't be able to be as active as before. This is really very sad and depressing for me.

WORK IN PROGRESS
▬ good old days 4 (10/? level(s) completed)
▬ dumb 2 - strange levels in my notepad (22/62 level(s) completed)
----------
By the way my Youtube channel
1. Lucius - Wildewoman: I like this one a lot. It has a jaunty ballad feel to it, but at the same time the echoe-y nature of a lot of the instrumentation gives the impression that it's maybe not as jaunty in tone as it seems on first listen. Has a really nice tune to it.
2. Inkie - Oblivion: Extremely cool rhythm to this one with the triplets laid over a standard 4/4 beat throughout. The instruments also produce this really neat, funky tune. Really like it overall.

3. msx - time tripping: pretty good, real wild sound to it. The ticking clock in the background fits the title of the track for sure.
4. Luis Miguel - Ahora te puedes marchar: A fun 80s song in Spanish. It fits in really well with other 80s pop and rock songs. Pleasant, upbeat song.
5. Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings: Very pretty JRPG music, but I don't have a strong opinion about it one way or another.
6. Sacha Collisson - Symphony Number Vibe: Eh, it's a dubstep remix of a classic song. Nothing amazing to me.
7. Jun Chikuma and Hirohiko Fukuda - Stage 5, Electro: Not as good as other Bomberman music I know. It's just kind of a weird tune?
8. György Ligeti and The King's Singers - The Alphabet: Nah, it's just dissonant singing. Like, it's purposeful, but I don't like listening to it.
