MaGL4 - Rules & Questions

Since MaGL4 is a SMW contest it only makes sense to post it on SMWCentral too, right?

The post previously

And so, the contest begins.
as promised

THE JUDGES:
Windslash (Saturn), Lord Ruby (Mars) and xfix (Jupiter).

To round out the roster, I will be judging as well.

The judging rubric, once again.
Fun - 40 Points representing the how enjoyable you found the level
Concept - 30 Points representing how interesting the ideas represented in the level are
Presentation - 20 Points representing the flavor, visual and sound design of a level.
Functionality - 10 Points representing whether the level has any major bugs, softlocks or crashes,

THE RULES:
-You may participate alone or with a single partner.
-Each participant may submit only one level.
-Levels must be compatible with the latest version of Snes9x or BSNES.
-Levels may have dragon coins and moons, but secret exits are not allowed.
-The judges intend to play the levels blind, therefore sharing screenshots or videos of your levels in places where they are present is not advised.
MSU-1 may only be used for custom music and must not be mandatory to play the level.

-A level may be disqualified if two or more judges are unable to play it. If one judge is unable to play it, that judge will merely grant a score of 0.
-A level may be disqualified if the judges agree that it was designed in bad faith, or if it was released previously, or if it was stolen.
-A level may be disqualified if it is submitted as a rom or .ips instead of as a .bps.

-If a judge is unable to complete the level, or determines a level is unjustly wasting their time, they may use tools to complete it.

THE DEADLINE:
Your level must be submitted by 21st of October, 9:00 PM CEST
The submissions thread is here

if you have any questions PM me on here or on talkhaus or DM me over on discord (Valentine#0402) OR post in this thread
24 hours left to get your applications in!

the voting is live

Hey Valentine, idk if you mind this but Venus's judging format isn't easy to navigate because of the way Excel handles its cell space and bar scrolling which makes it hard for people like me to read so I provided another format that is more easily readable and I think for future reference, Excel shouldn't be allowed as a valid format for judge applicants to use for their judging. Hope you don't mind.

And to those voting, please vote on what you think on how well the judge applicants critiqued the sample levels that were experienced.
Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Projects I support:

I never actually gave my thoughts on all of the applications, so I'll do so here (mind you, I haven't actually seen the levels myself):

Mercury: Nice and simple comments that are relatively short and to the point. Criticism seems fair, and also not too harsh. Overall, seems like a competent judge, but definitely around the middle of the pack.
Venus: Not gonna lie, I took one look at this guy's judging document and noped right out. These reviews are WAAAY too long (I used a word counter and they're all around 800 words), and the fact that they're in a spreadsheet really doesn't help. Very few people are going to be willing to read these.
Mars: I like the system of pros and cons here, and the haikus are an interesting way to add some personality to the reviews. I like this judge.
Saturn: Similar vibe to Mars, except with "fun facts" instead of haikus and slightly longer reviews. I think this guy tries a bit too hard to be funny sometimes, but the reviews seem okay (although they take a while to get to the point, I find).
Jupiter: Seems a bit harsh on the lower scoring levels, but overall solid reviews. Very thorough

I forget exactly how I voted on these since it's been a few days, but I think it was something like this:
Mars > Jupiter > Saturn > Mercury > Venus

(Also 0/10 because Saturn is before Jupiter on the info sheet :C)
Check out my WIP romhack!
this thread has now been converted into a thread for rules and questions about the contest, as the contest has started.
Do I need to have an account on Talkhaus in order to participate in this contest?

No.
Do we have to sign it somewhere to get in? Or we simply have to submit a level under the set deadline?
just submit the level and you're in
do we get trophies for it, or no since it's a talkhaus thing. still will make something either way, since raocow will probably play these lol.

My guess is no. This isn't an official SMW Central contest, and I don't there was ever an unofficial contest that actually gave SMWC trophies.
hey, I am tempted to participate in this and to make a great level,
but I don't understand the Sailor Moon references, does that mean I must theme my level around this manga? Or can I choose any level theme that makes it Great (tm)?
the names in the brackets next to the judges were the codenames they used in the anonymous judge vote, the contest has no overt theme, just make whatever you feel like making!

I can clearly see there is no anonymity rule for written out for this, so this means basically don't showoff your level in a very public place then. Meaning if I am reading into this right you can still go nuts with identifying it as something a given person would make, up to and including putting your own hallmarks in the level or blatantly putting your name on it. Am I on the money here?

It won't be punished, but I'd rather you not put your name on your entry.
I've granted a small extension to the deadline in order to hopefully make the crunch of finishing a contest entry less bad, and because the 18th has become inconvenient for me personally
It was a very fun contest, thank you for making this a reality. Good luck to all the entrants!
