Overworld Design Contest 2021 - RESULTS

OWDCResults

Good morning; good afternoon; good evening. Hello. I come bearing the results of the contest I have hereby named: "some overworld thing we did a while back". It's been a looooooong wait, huh?

Firstly, I would like to thank Major Flare and bebn legg for judging. I'd also like to thank Katrina. Unfortunately, she had to pull out from judging, but as by this point the other three judges had finished, we decided to press on with the results from three judges instead of four to avoid any further delays!

So, let's get on with it, shall we?

Claiming the runner up of the runner up position, we have:
Stivi and Burning Loaf scoring 98.67/100
Then in the "oh wow I got 2nd place amazing" position, it's:
Ringo scoring 99/100
And finally, in the coveted "oh my God I won" position, scoring a completely perfect score, is:
Devazure scoring 100/100

Congratulations to all of our winners! For a full break down on all the scores, feedback, rankings etc, you should check out this spreadsheet:

The Spreadsheet

Both mine and Major Flare's comments can be found within the spreadsheet, and bebn's can be found here.

To everyone else who entered, you'll receive this green little cutie:

And our judges get this blue babe:

Oh, and that's not all. If your username is xyz600sp, Koopster, Stivi, Burning Loaf, Dispace, Donut, or codfish1002: Katrina had judged your entries. While the scores don't count to the overall rankings, it would be a shame if the feedback written went unseen as it's incredibly detailed! Take a look here.

And with that, we have reached the end of this Overworld Design Contest! Hope you had fun! Your trophies will already be in your profiles, so go take a look!
21st place...

That a alright place for me and i was lucky to get my entry finish on time because i was in a rush.

Woah, I didn't expect such a high place considering my ow skills are subpar compered to the rest of the competition. =P
Congrats to the winners and thanks to the judges and organizers for making the contest awesome! #smrpg{y}
Can't wait for another Overworld contest. #smrpg{<3}
Well, i'll never join another contest in my life after these results.

oh wow I got 2nd place amazing
I'm really happy about this, but I can't feel happier because I felt that  Koopster's entry deserved at the very least that second place. I felt that it was one of the best entries alongside  Devazure's, so that's a bit disappointing to me...

That aside, I'm very thankful for the judges comments! Also congratulations to the other winners, especially  Devazure for reaching a perfect score! Absoulte king.
ayo dev you madman teach me your tricks please
jokes aside, im glad i got top 12

gg to the winners!
16th place is very nice and it reminds me of SNES 16-bit.
Wasnt expecting a Top 8 for me and M.S! #smrpg{gasp}

Otherwise, congratulations to the winners! Especially  Ringo and  Devazure.
Kirbo was here
I don't think I've ever seen an average score as high as 99 or even 98 in a contest like this, let alone a perfect 100. Seriously, HUGE congratulations to this contest's winners.
Check out my WIP romhack!
Congrats to everyone who participated and got a score!
Please pardon the eye.
Congrats to the winners! I could've been a bit sad that I didn't make it to top 3 as I was hoping, but I simply can't because every single one of the winners deserved their position. Dev and Mirann (and don't you say ever again your entry wasn't good!) were especially so passionate about their work, and Stivi and Bench worked really hard to achieve everything they idealised. Besides, fourth place is a really honorable position! (And it seems my track record with Major Flare giving me a perfect score is still intact :P )

I can get behind the comments and scoring for my entry. Though, aside from a few insecurities I had (namely, the special palette and the clarity of the final event), I'm still extremely happy with it and intend to stick to the same general formula in the future. Despite the lack of flashiness of vanilla graphics, it's the only way I truly enjoy making an overworld, and I think it's very interesting to see how far a mostly vanilla and SMW-based entry can get in a site-wide contest with so many talented people.

I can safely call this my favorite contest to enter in my whole time on this site, and not only because I love doing overworlds and was very passionate about my entry - the showoff channel nourished a very fun and healthy environment for the entrants in a rather unprecedented way. It was very fun to hang out in there, watching everyone try their best and help each other despite the competition.

With all that said, good job to all the entrants! I'd like to finish this off with a big shoutout to Lazy. I know for a fact he entered this contest just for fun with a mostly simple entry, but he's one of the most talented people I know with overworlds, and I consider him to be sort of a "guru". A lot of what I did, like the overhangs, the clouds, and just the general self-confidence to do out-of-the-box stuff with vanilla assets is heavily inspired by him.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Congrats to everyone who entered. Yes, I even mean that towards the ones who didn't score terribly high; putting together a full overworld at all is an impressive feat on its own, and I think the difficulty in making a completed OW is often underestimated.

Of course, the winning entries still deserve an even bigger congratulations. Truth be told, I had a strong feeling about what the top three would be, and it looks like I was pretty close. I knew Devazure would score high, but I still find it amazingly poetic that he won, considering the fact that his entry was loosely inspired by his winning entry for the 2009 contest. Bravo all-around there.

No one likes a pity party. And you actually scored pretty well; I'd be proud of myself if I were you, considering how tough the competition was. You don't need to be in the top five to have done a decent job, and it's all in good fun anyway.

I'm in the 22nd place but I don't like the fact that I'm still ahead of the end

Mirann wins! I'm satisfied with the result!
I am genuinely shocked that I received a perfect score. Honestly, there are things I felt that could have done better, but I am so thankful that my hard work still paid off. I really poured my heart into my entry, because after disappearing from the site for six long years, I really felt the need to come back and prove that my passion for overworld design is thriving. This genuinely feels very validating and rewarding.

I have to congratulate Mirann, Stivi, Bench, and Koopster for such a tight race to the top. I knew our placements would be similar to the final results, I just didn't know who was going to specifically place where. I would also like to thank KevinM, Donut, iCrawfish, Dark Prince, and Segment1Zone2 for the help, support, and laughs along the way. I've never seen a contest so full of collaboration and friendly competition.

I really can't wait to do it again.
Originally known as A Yoshi (2006-2009), Aquifer (2010-2011), and Azurik (2012-2014).
Ah, I should have prepared a little speech about the entries, as honestly it's been long I've played them and I can't comment too much now.

Honestly, it was a pleasure for me to discover all the crazy things an overworld can do and I hope I will get to that point one day in my romhacking carreer ahah!

I remember well being amazed at Stivi's way of drawing his submaps.
I also loved Dev's entry.
And the entry of OEO6 was lots of fun because of its uncommon themes.

I enjoyed myself a lot in entries that have Dispace's musics, which are very cute and characteristic, almost making them a staple of sky and star submaps.

I also noticed that my own music ports were used quite a lot, this made me happy.

Finally, I appreciated to see the WIPs and to give my feedbacks on Discord.

In one sentence: good job everyone and thanks for taking this adventure. Special congratulations to Devazure: what a comeback!
I have yet to see someone score as perfectly as Devazure, because wow. I am genuinely flabberghasted.

Congrats, entrants! I've only seen some snippets (and a video of Lazy's entry recently), but I can't deny that y'all have a lot of talent with maps.

(Can’t say I’m surprised that none of the judges fully recognized my FE4 homage, it is what it is)

Very pleased with these results! Even though I didn’t break into the top half like I was hoping, I’m glad to take a perfect 80% for my first time, and I’m very pleased to see how well the top contenders did.

I came into this contest knowing pretty much nothing about OW design, so I’d like to give thanks to all the other contenders who helped me out in the showoff channel and encouraged me along the way, without which my entry would’ve been in a much less complete state as it is. While I didn’t particularly execute all my ideas to the max, I’m still proud of what I was able to accomplish, and eager to participate next time! (Though, maybe I shouldn’t port all the music for my submission during the context next one to save time, haha).
