Starry Sky Background

I just have gotten a Completely Original™ idea after finishing up the Firefly where I figured out to make a cool new background!

Now guess the background layers!

The answer:
It's three layers. One is used for the foreground and two are used for the background. So on what layer are these stars? The answer: It isn't. Instead, I use HDMA for the background, both to brighten up only one pixel on each scanline and to give each star a different colour. Pretty cool, don't you think?

Enjoy!

Note: If you want to change the background (i.e. use a different pattern), remember to first install Python 3, install the colour library with
Code
pip install colour

It will generate a file named HdmaTable.asm. Copy its content into the level file but make sure you replace the old table i.e. remove everything below MaskingTable: (including that line) and then paste the new table.
I will include an easier insertion method once I submit.
Fanatical like a Demon
This is trippy. Will def have to play around with this @_@
Major thanks to Suika Ibuki for layout!

Yooo, that's some really sick parallax. Great job with this background, MFG. I dare to say, I don't mind vanilla too much, but it feels so much better when it has parallax and the illusion of distance, it gives another feel. #smrpg{:3}

Oh lord this parallax looks awesome! Perfectly gives the illusion of distance. Great job #smrpg{:O}
Very clever and nice. If this post were a YouTube video, I would've hit the bell.
I love how this looks, feels very serene.

I think I've seen this tech in another hack and completely forgot to take note of it. I like that you've made it available! It's very clever.
A very clever trick at work here. Very nicely done!
It's so simple but incredibly effective.
The way that the effect is achieved is really smart too.

I'd love to see more SMW styled backgrounds like this. #smrpg{haha}
I'm honestly amazed I haven't seen this done sooner; this is such a good use of HDMA.
Looks aesthetically comfy and calm, I like it.

crazy how something like this can make a 30 year old game look so alive...
Progress Update!!
You can brighten just one pixel per scanline with HDMA? Learning something new everyday.
Incredibly cute execution :)
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
I've seen something similar done in the CLDC entry "Lightest", so it's neat to have a public version. This is crazy!

This is super cool. It's really neat to see stuff like this since it makes you realize just how versatile HDMA actually was. Is it possible to have them shift colors slightly to give a twinkling effect?
Of all the ways I've seen people manipulate HDMA, this is one that's news to me. The parallax does give the illusion of distance, which is undeniably really trippy.
Cool discovery and execution!
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
Anything that gives more life to the game is a plus for me.

I loved the starry night idea so much I went as far to change my layout lol

That's ultimately my inspiration. It really made me wonder "How did Katrina managed to do this?" until it made click and realised it's actually this easy.

Right now, no. It could be possible if I'd use indirect HDMA and thus store the colours to RAM but such a feature hasn't been implemented yet.
For one of the oldest techniques in SMW hacking I know of, predating all of the parallax, layer three editing stuff, HDMA continues to surprise me with how versatile and powerful it can be. Really cool!
This is so gorgeous. Your HDMA skillz are reaching to the highest point of existence and you finally managed to make starry skies work right! Great work, MFG!
