[SMBX2] 2k1x Subzero Heroes

Non-Hack GameVideo/Trailer

Preface:
I'm pulling a real Nintendo here and highlighting something that I released in September of last year, and completely whiffed Winter C3 on, and then released a patch of the scope of a "Deluxe-ification" for a few months ago. There's a big chance some of you might have heard of this game already, seen it, played it. But having spent quite a long time on it, and never having managed to showcase it here, I hope the "better late than never" reasoning works well when it comes to hoping that the content here may inspire creative levels in this completely different environment to the one I'm used to.

This SMBX2 game is the current milestone of how far the engine can go. A collaboration between Waddle, snoruntpyro and myself, with help from Sancles, rixithechao, Marina, The0x539 and Ryaa. It's 55 levels big, and hardly counts as Mario anymore.

To play it, download SMBX2b4, and insert the 2k1x Subzero Heroes folder into the "worlds" directory. Then, you will be able to select it from the launcher.

The difficulty of this gets quite intense. It was made with experienced players in mind, so you might struggle going into it.

If you prefer watching or flicking through videos of the game, there is a dev commentary playthrough we made, a walkthrough with a title I'll always find unsettling and let's play by raocow.

I hope this game manages to inspire similar out-of-left-field creations in SMW, and I hope you enjoy your time with it!
A really good SMBX2 hack you have, Enjl.
:o
I like this. I like the visuals and the story. Really cute!
Well played, Enjl. Well played indeed.

A really great episode that I have to recommend to everybody. I'll note that SMBX's physics are quite different from SMW's and that this isn't exactly an easy episode, but getting used to them shouldn't take too long (plus, this episode changes the physics slightly for the better).
Great trailer, the gameplay looks fun to me.
Your project has the quality to be even an indie game.

I think the only weak point is how far away the player is from the camera, maybe because I'm not used to SMBX.
I will try to play later if I have time.
Exclusive content and nostalgia!
Very beatiful, looks awesome!
Damn, it's absolutely impressive to see how far SMBX, and by extension SMBX2, has come. This game looks amazing and is definitely a feat to be proud of, it's crazy to me to see SMBX with such this level of flexibility, detail, and aesthetic to it, compared to the grassroots I was used to just some years ago.

I'll have to give this a try at some point, its been a good long while since I last booted up SMBX, let alone played an episode or anything like that, and this definitely looks like it would be worth the time to do so. Really amazing stuff, Enjl, keep up the good work, and send my regards to the rest of the SMBX2 team!
Bio.
Twitch.
It's a really amazing episode which is well designed and very fun to play! I'm also glad to see SMBX stuffs on C3!
I've been watching Raocow play this the past few weeks and I didn't even know it was SMBX related. I thought it was an entirely different fan-game engine or something so that shows how impressive it actually is.

I've seen a lot of creative and well designed levels so I feel that others should give this game ago and experience some really well thought out platforming with some fun gimmicks as well as the additions of the item system that helps add more to the core experience.

My only question is how did Waddle ( well Waddle Dee ) end up been the main character? Was it easier to work around and make a moveset from them over other characters?
Reading the comments so far has been absolutely lovely. Thanks, everyone <3

Really interesting question with a really boring answer. When snoruntpyro and I theorycrafted this game I tossed the idea into the ring, and instantly ideas like the cape swipe attack and the superjump came forth. so it just developed from me literally sending the dm "about that, i kinda want waddle as the hero" in response to a question about player character physics. It was definitely not as easy to work with as a standard character, though in a way the waddle playable we made is just a very heavily augmented Toad character.
I betatested this game and i can confidently say that its worth playing even if you know nothing about smbx, or if you know about how bad the physics are, cause the game has custom physics which feel significantly better
Oof, I still need to play this sometime. I didn't know raocow made videos of it, I'll probably watch those before playing this myself.
Check out my WIP romhack!
I'm usually not that big on SMBX mainly due to the physics of the game but this, this looks like it could of been it's own game made in a different engine.
I love how you're using SMBX to make something that's a platformer but not really entirely Super Mario.
Really recommend this Episode, it has an amazing design and a very good Soundtrack to it!

It's among the most popular Episodes for a long time, and has a very feel to it.

This is one of the few episodes that also pushes SMBX to its limits and expands what it literally can do now!
Check out my SMBX Project I posted for C3 if you got the spare time for it :)
