If it's not Kaizo, why is Kaizo in the title? Well, it has to do with a meta-ish plot I came up with in the shower when considering what kind of hack to use my OWDC entry for. After all, almost all my level contest entries have ended up in hacks, so why not an Overworld? Gotta love shower thoughts, right?

What IS the plot? It involves Bowser and the Koopalings stealing the wands of the 7 Guardians, each of whom will be based on a veteran of SMWC. He plans to use said wands to turn the Mushroom Kingdom into a Kaizo World. It's up to Mario (and Luigi) to stop them before everyone gets eaten by Floating Munchers!

SCREENSHOTS

Since this hack's Overworld is my OWDC entry, I won't be showing screens of that.

Here's the title screen. The gradient in those clouds is not actual HDMA. There's already UberASM active to hide Mario after all. Yes, I know how to make multiple UberASMs run in a level and how to stop gradients from disappearing when the menu is brought up. I might even use that ASM that fades the screen to black when the menu is pulled up. That Title Screen is pretty busy after all.

1-1 - Here We Go Again

Well, I'm out to have a real good time...

I've been on a GFXing spree lately, so a lot of my newest graphical creations are going to be in this hack.

1-2 - Green Grass of Home

I've wanted to do this particular Message Box reskin for a while now. It just seemed so appropriate given Teletraan X's color scheme. Getting all the details into a 16x16 space was a bit harder than anticipated though.

Yoshi Coins can come out of blocks. This isn't anything new for me, as I've been doing it since 2014. EternityLarva's block just makes it look more refined.

Gemma T's Pitstop

These are the hack's version of Toad Houses. Gemma T is one of the Guardians, and she's also an Author Avatar. To be fair, I did say the Guardians would be based on SMWC veterans, and I've been here for over a decade.

1-3 - Earthy Caverns

Here's the semi-obligatory underground level in the grass world. It's named after the song that plays in it, which the composer is actually in the process of remastering.

What's that robot-looking thing in the corner? It's a collectible Transformer. This was not an easy thing to implement, especially for someone with very little ASM experience. I wanted to do it so bad though, both because there's a precedent in Essence Star's collectible Character Cards, and because I love me some Transformers. So does Gemma T, naturally.

The Collection Room

Perhaps you wanted to know what was behind that door in Gemma T's first Pitstop...or you wanted to know what happens to the Transformers after you collect them. Well, this is where they end up. As you collect the figures scattered throughout the hack, they'll appear on these shelves.

Pressing UP in front of a figure brings up a bio screen like this. So far, I have about half of these done (7/16).

1-S - Yellow Switch

Once again, Switches are in otherwise normal levels.

Seems like I always get a screenshot near a Venus. This is the level that introduces them.

Here's the Switch room itself. I might release this FG/BG.

1-4 - Goom-Bounce Garden

This level revolves around Pea Bouncers. Some are the original sprites. Others are blocks. The lightest colored blocks will only bounce sprites, like the Goombas. The medium-colored ones bounce both Mario and sprites, and the darkest ones are the original Pea Bouncer sprites.

1-F - Giga-Goomba's Fort

How cute! Some Goombas wanted to play Combiner...or maybe they found the Enigma of Combination. If so, it doesn't work quite as well on Goombas as it does Cybertronians. One stomp, and their "Combiner Mode" is disengaged. Then they're just puny little Goombas again.

That's a big Goomba! Is he from Gigantion? Doesn't matter. He goes squish just as easily as the normal-sized ones.

Goomba-Generating Pipes....but VERTICAL!

1-5 - Donut Walk Away

Yep, this level introduces Donut Lifts.

This second area also introduces the dreaded AUTO-SCROLL!

I probably should've gotten better screens of this level. These make it look kinda flat and boring, but it isn't.

Good work on this. Seeing this has made me realize that even though i have a finished hack of my own, I still have a long way to go to even make a mark of my very own in the SMWC world
I enjoy a lot seeing your new works.
The Transformers collection is a pretty unique feature! I can see the work that went into that, presenting all the pieces of lore.

The graphics are adorable, I really love the looks of the Switch Palace room.

Also regarding your OWDC entry:
I think the Gemma T Pitstop is a level name in your OW right? Judges may have been noticing it.
The plot you came up with this interests me quite a bit haha. Screenshots look clean and it looks like quite a bit of fun. I'll be looking out for this one for sure.

From what I've seen, your hack screenshots are very good, keep working on the hack to bring news#smw{:TUP:}

I have successfully TRANSFORMED the Bonus Star counter into a Transformer counter. Some other ASM in this hack seems to have half-broken the Bonus Star system. The huge number still appears when you cut the goal tape, but the counter wasn't being affected. I may possibly use a different goal system anyway, like that flagpole I used in Vanilla Islands. With Bonus Stars no longer in play, that counter was just wasting space, so I figured I could possibly repurpose it. My guess was that it wouldn't be too difficult. I'd just need to change the RAM address the counter reads from to a byte of FreeRAM, which would be incremented each time a figure is collected. Fortunately, the collectibles themselves only use 2 of the 3 bytes available at $7E1F2B. The third free byte was wide open for the counter, so I repointed the Bonus Star counter to $7E1F2D and added the code to increment that same address into the collectible block. The only flaw in this system is that the blocks reappear whenever the level is revisited, whether or not they've been collected. This means that the counter's number can be increased artificially. I don't know what would happen if it exceeds either $63 or $FF. There will only be 16 collectible Transformers in the hack, so the number should max out at 16 ($10).

What a truly fiendish plot. Transforming the Mushroom Kingdom into a kaizo world? Certainly we'll have to muster all our forces to stop this menace, and godspeed!#smrpg{:D}

Really funny idea for a plot, and these screenshots look great. I've seen a few of your hacks and they always look very polished.
Check out my WIP romhack!
I like the overall aesthetic of this hack. It's kinda cozy to me.

I like how the hack is creatively critical. The screenshots show less empty levels, with a less linear, apparent level design. The screen that caught my attention the most is the forest: it brings a feeling that I have never seen before in your projects.

Is great. Waiting for a demo to be released.
Exclusive content and nostalgia!
That's some great aesthetics you got there, gamma! Kinda reminds me of my first hack.

Also, I laughed a lot at the plot. Even tho it's not really that original, because it's the same plot from SMB3 but kaizo'd.

Wow, I've never seen a SMW hack based on a true story before. It's interesting that you'd use Super Mario World as a medium to provide commentary on the problems with today's society.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
Although, a world filled with floating munchers wouldn't be bad. #smrpg{:D}

Just kidding. The plot idea is very funny and I like that you reward the player for finding the Transformer collectibles with valuable trivia.

I also like you're very motivated when making these graphics. So far, this hack seems promising. Keep up the good work. #smrpg{:3}

Thanks, guys. I'm getting very close to done with the first World of this hack now. I still haven't implemented the alternate goal/midway system, but I have gotten half of the first castle done.

1-C - Iggy Koopa's Castle

A variant of this background is likely to be submitted to the GFX section.

I love your hacks. They're rather simplistic at heart, and I think that's part of what draws me to them; they always give off a very nostalgic and familiar vibe, despite being completely new in terms of levels. From the very start, I've always thought that this was the sort of vibe that rom hacking was "meant" to go for in some way, so I feel that you nail it perfectly.

These screenshots are no different! Lovely work, Gamma.

This hack has more than meets the eye. The storyline that involves around Kaizō and SMW Central itself rocks into a whole new kind of level in SMW hacking. Like what K.T.B. said, this hack, and their screenshots, are no different! Keep up the good work, m'lady! Now if you really include me in this hack...

KlugIt will be if I can get the Transformer collection system completely debugged. imamelia converted the figures themselves into objects so they don't reappear in the levels after being collected, but that seems to have messed up the shelf display object. Figures appear that haven't been collected yet, and the figures I do collect don't appear on the shelf. I wondered if one of the nearly 30 patches I have in this ROM is messing with it and ported, only for the ported ROM to crash upon opening the load game menu. Thankfully, I was able to use Lunar Magic's restore feature to get the ROM back to a point where it at least didn't crash. My collection system is still broken, and I kinda need imamelia to help debug it since he coded it. It's tempting to just scrap the thing, but I've already put too much work into it. Nobody told me it was a bad idea when I first decided to implement it, and I've been a bit more ambitious and impulsive this year.

Curious hack name. The hack looks pretty beautiful like its predecessors, and I liked the name "Gemma T" lol.
Thanks, Eduard.

Well, I finally got the system working, and all that was wrong was the RAM address being called by the object. imamelia and I have been working together to implement the collectible Transformers, and he forgot that we switched FreeRAM addresses.

Now that I got that system working, I can move on. :D

NEW MIDWAY/GOAL FLAGS

The midway flag is a custom block based on the one Wiiqwertyuiop made years ago. I "coded" the rest of it myself, provided one can count calling a couple pre-made subroutines as coding. The only real downside to these is that they reappear when you re-enter the level. It's not game-breaking though. These don't make you big like the vanilla ones do. Hopefully, these can easily be made into secondary midway flags for when I implement multiple midways. Thankfully, it's a lot less tedious to do that now than it was when I made Starlight Island Adventure.

The goal flag is just JamesD's custom sprite goal flag. I decided to go this route because of the neutered Bonus Stars and repurposing of their counter on the HUD. These flags are the reason I opted for a custom midway. The original just clashes too much.

Iggy is now done. He's just another n00b Boss. He can be a little challenging though. He'll shoot fireballs aimed at you after the first hit. When he's down to his last hit, he'll start shooting 2 at a time in a sort-of spreadshot pattern. He'll also be moving at his max speed and jumping more frequently.

All of this means that World 1 is done, but it doesn't mean there'll be a demo. I still need to make the intro cutscene and choose music for both it and the title screen. I also need to fix the issue of message boxes killing the background HDMA.

Well, I got most of the debugging done. I also changed the midway flags and flagpoles a bit in the process of implementing multiple midway points. I also finished this.

I had to hide Mario behind a priority-enabled object, rather than use the Invisible Mario UberASM. Said code messes up the sprite message box, making it display garbage.

With that said, I do have an unofficial C3 demo for you guys. I say "unofficial" because I won't be submitting this demo to the Hacks section. I'll probably submit a demo at a later point, like after finishing World 2. That should give the judges more time to look at my OW contest entry before this hack spoils it.
