Before you download the bps, know there's a hard mode difficulty which I recommend as that's what v2 mainly focuses on! More information under "Hard Mode" further down, thanks!

Super Mario World: 30th Anniversary Edition v2

It's been a long time coming for this! I've been hauling ass on this for the last 6 months after the last C3. For those of you who don't know or are to lazy to click the link, a started a hack to celebrate SMW's 30th anniversary and here's everything it had to offer then:

Changes:
-Uses sa1
-Luigi and Peach have different graphics.
-Lives, powerups, Yoshi color, dragon coins, coins, etc are all saved now (similar to sma2).
-You can save at any time now on the map by pressing select.
-Various levels have cosmetic changes to match their placement on the map (including beta bg's).
-Various enemies have cosmetic changes to them.
-Some changes have been made to enemies in the credits.
-There are now 5 special colored Yoshis outside the normal Green Yoshi and each have a special gimmick/power but they can't be used outside their levels until all 96 exits have been found. Trying to use them in any level beforehand will prompt the No Yoshi sign entrance (every level has a unique one and the Yoshi color on the sign changes based on the one you have). Some levels won't allow Yoshi at all regardless simply bc the level is impossible to pass while keeping the Yoshi.
-All level songs now have Yoshi bongos with some exceptions (like bosses).
-Yoshi can enter most castles now (and boss rooms).
-Yoshi can now eat much more enemies, can you find out which?
-Some level layouts have changed to introduce new "unused" areas or match their sma2 counterpart.
-All levels except switch palaces now contain Dragon Coins. Collect 5 or more in each level will change them into Peach coins like sma2.
-Beating special world no longer triggers the fall palette, instead you must now find all 96 exits. This will not only change the map palette and the 1st page enemies like in the vanilla smw, but also every level will now have a new palette and even more enemies will have different appearances (as well as make you be able to take Special Yoshis in most levels).
-A "hard mode" exists which can be activated by going to either Yoshi's House or the Top Secret Area, pausing the game, inputting the konomi code, and then unpausing the game. If done right, a message prompt will appear.
-Hard mode changes the behavior of various enemies (and bosses) as well as adding new ones not previously seen throughout certain levels. Normally the losing powerup system now functions like SMA2 (you first turn into Big Mario and then if you get hit again the box item will drop), in hard mode you automatically turn small like in vanilla smw but the item box is disabled. Midway points also won't give you a powerup.

The hack itself went through quite the bug fixes during its initial release and I sort of expect the same. I was working on this hack until last second and even then, I didn't get everything I wanted done T_T (status screen patch and was expecting some credit cutscenes edited). Maybe those can be integrated in future updates, which will be available in this thread after c3. Back to what i was tryna get at, you guys will essentially be my guinea pigs lol.

Version 2

Super Mario Advance 2 Cutscenes
In collaboration with Yoshifanatic (which I'm sure a lot of you guys have already checked his thread, and if you haven't please do so and leave a comment, the dude was a fucking madman and he's one of the most helpful people I've ever met), the Super Mario Advance 2 cutscenes have now been recreated and my hack now features these! All have been recreated and to make them play (outside the default intro) it's nearly the same as the GBA version, simply collect 5 or more Yoshi Coins in every level that has a coin counter on the overworld to unlock the All Dragon Coins cutscene and find all 96 exits for the All Exits cutscene. There is an alternative intro cutscene which I won't spoil how to get hehehe, let's see who the first person is that can unlock it! There are some slight differences, the most noticeable one being the title screen logo and brown drawn map. The map in my hack is much more faithful to the gba scale wise.

Hard Mode
Go into either Yoshi's House or the Top Secret Area, pause the game, enter the Konami code, unpause the game, hard mode has been unlocked.
Hard mode has now been revamped and what I spent most of these last 6 months overtaxing myself on. In version 1, hard mode only added new enemies in some levels and changed how the bosses behaved, in v2 I went through the entire game and made various hijacks on nearly every single sprite and gave them different behaviors for hard mode. Hard mode now offers a new and more challenging experience for anyone who wants to test their skills at the og game. It's not kaizo difficulty, but in my opinion is comparable to say playing hard mode on Contra III. Some enemies simply move faster, some have slight different behaviors such as always facing the player, others are more drastic which I won't spoil, some even have different interactions so you may wanna be cautious on what you thought you could jump or even spin jump on heh. I highly encourage everyone to play hard mode as that's what v2 mostly focuses on! The difficulty fluctuates between levels but SMW already did that so i felt it fit as is.

Misc Changes
-Some levels were slightly edited, some more than others. Most edits were done to make Star Road much different to access than the original game to give add a bit to that explore feel SMW originally had. There's a some new rooms and exits and particularly one added secret that's reserved for a potential secret boss in the future so props to anyone who finds this "new area". For this reason, the hack has been locked.
-You can change between Mario and Luigi on the overworld using the R button. This of course makes re-entering castle a pain so I'll have to change that sometime in the future.
-Yoshi has had nearly every interaction fixed! He can now be brought into Reznor rooms and instances that would directly hurt you while riding Yoshi have been fixed (this includes touching hurt blocks from the sides and bottom).
-Golden Yoshi had to given a slightly different ability in castles since it caused a lot of glitches with enemies, even crashing the game.
-The game no longer softlocks at the end, you can press any button and you'll be taken to Yoshi's Island. It's important to save the game after the credits play if you want to save progress in case you activate some flags (no spoilers). Resetting the game mid credits or even during the end will not save any progress you may have made.

Upcoming Plans?
Possibly for a version 3, I'd like to get the 2 missing patches I named above integrated when finished (status screen and credit cutscene edits). Additionally I have a patch by Lui to enable Luigi tto have his jump justt like the GBA version but it's not tested to the point of being sure there's no bugs. There's also the idea of having a choose a game menu and making the classic Mario bros arcade minigame. I talked to a certain someone, who may speak out if they'd like, who gave a possible collab in the future to introduce more features into the hack such as co op so we'll see!

That's all I have at the top of my head so there ya go, enjoy the hack and have fun! Please let me know of any bugs and I'll do my best to try fix them (like I said, this was worked on until last second so you guys are my guinea pigs, but the hack was tested daily as additions came so hopefully no new bugs were introduced). If there's any changes you'd like to see, let me know and I'll take it into consideration (especially of a lot of people agree with it). The hack was test using the latest BSNES, so if bugs are present in other emulators but not BSNES, I probably won't try fixing them so use BSNES cores!

Special Thanks and Shoutouts
-Yoshifanatic1 and imamelia get the biggest shoutouts here and were the ones who extensively helped me out with A LOT of things. Whether it be asm help, debugging, questions about decisions, etc, you name it, these 2 have been helping me all the way through despite how much I probably pestered and annoyed them but they always stood by my side and answered when they could and I can't thank them enough for the massive help they had for v2 of this hack.
-I had an anonymous friend help me out with some GFX and the asm for an enemy’s hard mode behavior. It'd be a disservice not to mention them at all despite them not wanting to be named so I asked their permission for this shoutout, thank you.
-Alcaro game in clutch last second and made a base system for me to use for hard mode. I can't say much about it bc I don't want to give hints.
-Everyone else from v1 who is named which you can check the link for last C3.
-The community who made the various resources used for this hack. Your work, no matter how big or small, contributed to this hack and I thank you guys!

Challenges for you guys to try out!
-Find all 96 exits
-Find 5+ Dragon Coins in every level (without using Yoshi wings).
-Pass every level in hard mode without switching back.
-Find the new areas.
-Unlock all 4 cutscenes.
-Beat every level on hard with no Yoshi.
-Beat every level on hard with no powerups.
-Beat every level without losing Yoshi once (for all 5 colors).
-Find the golden mushroom.

Post C3: Make sure to follow the thread here if you'd like to see future updates on this.

Well now, this is absolutely amazing!! I missed out on last C3, so this is even more surprising to me.

SMA2 was my first experience with Mario World, so this brings back a lot of memories. It's interesting to see all the little layout changes.
Plus I love all the original changes, too, like the Chucks being blue to match their modern iterations, or the waterfalls in the background of Yoshi's Island 3.

I haven't gotten further than Donut Plains 1 since trying this out, but this breathes enough new life into the game that I'm definitely going to beat it (and hopefully 100% it - I'm really curious about these new Yoshis and level palettes).
Wow, this Super Mario World: 30th Anniversary Edition hack looks very interesting, I'll play it, it looks fun#smw{:TUP:}
This looks really cool, I'm digging all the quality of life improvements and minor changes to make the game feel fresh while still keeping its own charm.

I'm genuinely curious on how Hard Mode looks like, I wanna try it out later.
Like I said in another thread I really am all for adding in all the extra SMA content into SMW for the SNES so we really get a "definitive" edition of the classic game.

I'm quite looking forward to giving this a try and seeing the Beta Content been implemented into the levels as well as the Hard Mode.
I think we all can agree SMW is super easy so having an option to enable some extra challenge is always a win in my book.

Great Work LadiesMan217, I can't wait to give this a go! #smrpg{y}
I tried playing this on my SNES Classic, but it seems like it sometimes saves when I save it and sometimes doesn't. I'm liking the hard mode, but the save issue is making it difficult for me to enjoy the game.

Oh wow, i'm glad to see you're still working on this! I had a lot of fun playing it last time, and it seems to just keep getting better!

I remember the Hard Mode was the one thing that was still lacking on the last version (like how many levels were left unchanged from vanilla SMW), so it's nice to see that was your focus, as it really feels like the turning point to make SMW more exciting (since, as 1UPDudes said, the vanilla game is very easy for the most part).

I'll be sure to give this another go as soon as i can!

A lot of enemies got cosmetic changes, most being from the credits such as hammer bro's platform, or the bony enemy’s palettes. As a kid I always wanted those designs to be in game bc I found them fascinating!

It's definitely worth investing time in! It's a breath of fresh air giving more challenge while maintaining the og game's overall design as you said, charm. I tried not to mess to much with that feeling and I'm hoping I balanced that out with the new difficulty added!

That's been my goal, to make what we can all arguably consider the "definitive" SMW game and experience. On the surface it may not look a lot (especially on normal mode), but the stuff in this hack coding wise is... ugh. I'm so happy to finally have gotten through it lol. Let me know how it goes!

That is very odd, I didn't have this issue at all in BSNES. Is it bc I'm using the latest sa1 version (not yet hosted here)? Are the castle and ghost house saves at the very least working? I hope this inconvenience doesn't draw you out of the game T_T.

It definitely lacked considering all it did was change the boss behaviors and add beta sprites in some levels. I'm glad this revamp completely brought back interest in the game! Let me know how that experience plays out for you! There's even more beta enemies!

It was quite a bit of work getting those cutscenes in and helping you debug a lot of the issues that came up with them and other stuff. But, the end result was worth it!

I think I've said this before, but a lot of these types of SMW hacks (ie. Hacks that enhance SMW or expand it) tend to not be very interesting and/or lazily made. SMW, except I changed the palettes! SMW, except I put two of every enemy next to each other! However, the work you put into your hack goes well beyond that and is something that is definitely worth playing. And that was what I felt about the previous version. I'll have to give the newest version a look at some point! :)
My Hacks:
Mario's Strange Quest V1.6
Yoshi's Strange Quest V1.3 / V1.3.1 Beta 4.6

Other stuff:

Yoshifanatic's Discord Server: A place for fans of my stuff and/or Yoshi to chat with others.
I keep meaning to check this out but I'm kind of glad I didn't have time to play V1 since V2 is now out with more additions.
SMA2 cutscenes in original SMW? Heck yeah! Do you happen to have video footage of it? (Might give the hack a try myself later on, but the cutscenes are definitely what I'm most interested in).

I've always played with the idea of porting all the SMA2-exclusive content to the SNES version, especially the cutscenes, but ultimately, I was just way too lazy. Nice to know someone beat me to the punch! 🙂👍
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
Incredible seeing the SMA2 cutscenes in here. Definitely planning on playing through this (on hard mode, of course)!

maybe I can ask some people around and see if there's a solution for this. In the mean time I'd just suggest any emulator that can handle BSNES cores.

So I feel a little bit cheated since I started playing v1, and then you brought about this update and I'm like "shit" lmao. It's all incredible, I saw a stream of the first world today and I had to stop watching because now I wanna restart my run on this update since Hard Mode actually looks like it's not just "hey new enemies, sometimes" since like the update says now the normal enemies are tweaked to be waaaay tougher.

If I had a suggestion, perhaps a harder bonus game (Level 0/100) would've been cool since barely anyone changes it at all.

Ladiesman, you have just given me a huge feeling of nostalgia from just playing this definitive version of Super Mario World! SMA2 was the very first Mario game I ever had, so I've very fond memories over it!

I've seen your stuff for a brief moment on #showoff and YouTube, but it's fantastic to see it all in-game! #smrpg{<3}
Just so you know, I'm very active on the site anymore like I was before; I'm mainly on Discord now.
It's really good to see such modification to the original SMW which really makes the original game a better playing experience. I especially like the Hard Mode idea and the SMA2 cutscene!
