KLDC 2021

We made it, fam.

Before we get too deep into the numbers, I want to take a moment and give a huge word of thanks to our judges: ThirdWall, Margot, GlitchCat7 and katun24. They have gone way above and beyond to not only ensure you get the fair judging and feedback you deserve, but also to come up with new ways to recognize, celebrate and showcase achievement in levels across the entire board.

Additionally, I want to give a special thanks to Cartesius, who started out as a judge before having to step back due to personal commitments. Not only did Cart help contribute to a strong and collaborative judging experience, they helped shape the contest from the beginning with strong feedback and contributions to format and rubric.

And now, here we go:

HM -- mikairanutshack -- RAIZING HELL
HM -- Magikey -- How to be STUNNING

Two levels were determined to be uniquely unscorable as “Kaizo: Light” levels by the judges. While we recognize that this normally would result in a disqualification, the judges wanted to recognize the effort and creativity in these works, as the reasons they are unscorable do not relate to the breaking of any contest or site rules.

These two levels have been awarded Honorable Mentions and will receive a trophy and recognition in the official results:

RAIZING HELL - mikairanutshack - Determined to be too far outside the scope of a Super Mario World level to be fairly scorable

How to be STUNNING - Magikey - Determined to require too much intricate knowledge of SMW mechanics to be fairly scorable

Six levels received disqualifications:

TheKazooBloccGosh - Vines - Level is broken when played as creator intended

zanian - Boomuda Triangle - Broken patch

Dispace - Trial of the Chaos - Determined to exceed reasonable demand of the player by the judges

HLXY - Shell in a nutshell - Determined to exceed reasonable demand of the player by the judges

EternityLarva - Spring Season - Determined to exceed reasonable demand of the player by the judges

foamywubba - Gambit - Determined to exceed reasonable demand of the player by the judges

Here is a link to a spreadsheet with all of the judging, as well as individual judge score breakdowns and comments for all of the creators.

Please go through these!

Our judges wrote, no joke, hundreds of pages of feedback for the community, and each level received attention and explanation. Even if you didn't enter, you will be able to learn something from the writeups each judge contributed.

Point of Privilege

This has been a wild ride for all of us on the planning end of things, and I won't pretend like we don't already have a lot we want to explore and consider for next year's contest. Between the quantity and quality of entries this year, the kaizo community has shown life, growth and achievement that I'm not sure anyone could have dreamed 12 years ago.

We appreciate everyone's passion and commitment to their work, and I hope you can feel the same passion from the judges and from me in these results. Between re-approaching the scoring setup, creating Judges' Choice Awards, video highlights, and the Kaizo Wiki's evolution into a historical archive of KLDCs past, we have worked hard to make this the best contest possible for the community. We aren't there yet, and we have a long way to go to perfection, but thank you for trusting us to provide you this opportunity.

All of us love this genre of game, and we want it to grow.

Congratulations, one last time, to all of the creators!

See you in 2022, everyone.
I'm not a doctor.

I had no stake in this but first!

edit: congratulations to the winners, making (and playing) Kaizo hacks is a feat I could never understand how to achieve. Lots of hard work went into this contest for sure.

Congrats to all.
Disappointing but expected, I have no idea how to make a kaizo level as it's outside of my field of interest. At least I can say I entered this contest once :)

Fourth!

Congrats to the winners and participants, and thanks for taking on this contest as always, Doctor No!
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
Good Job to all the winners and everyone who entered! This year was a real treat to play, and the quality barrier was so high...

I look forward to seeing what everyone makes next, cheers to 2022!
GG everybody, stiff competition this year! I loved seeing the myriad of level styles and concepts, everybody did fantastic work. Thanks so much to GlitchCat7, Thirdwall, Katun24, SuperMargot, and Cartesius for their judging, and to Doctor No for organizing!
I placed exactly where I expected! Nowhere!

Congrats guys~!
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Congrats to everyone who participated on a great effort, and special thanks to the judges of course for their immense effort in working on this contest. Thanks to Doc as well for organizing and running everything!!! This was an absolute behemoth of a contest

As for my results, disappointed though I am that I didn't do better, I can't say I'm absolutely shocked that I placed where I did. My level definitely lacked that 'spark' (heh) as described by just about all the judges, and I kinda knew that.

My main goal with my level was more to create something that was just some fun, simple platforming that would break up the pace of brain-blaster level after brain-blaster level, since my focus was on my hack at the time. I was also curious what an 'average kaizo hack level' would end up looking like in this contest's judging. Overall, I think I mostly succeeded in what I set out to do (aside from for Margot it seems, I'm sorry friend pls forgive me) - that said, next time one of these (or something like it) comes around, I think I want to really lean in and put in a solid try, make a level that surprises people.

Anyways, enough about me. GG everyone for their wonderful efforts- there's some really incredible work in here and some of this stuff really blew me away. And again, again again again, thank you so much to the judges for dedicating so much time and energy to this contest.
Congratulations to the winners! :D What a showing from all entrants and everyone who participated,
the bar for quality was quite high and competition was stiff across the board.

This contest was a monumental one on many levels, so thanks to the judges for going above and beyond
with their scoring and feedback! Thanks also to Doctor No for continuing to organize this event!

Looking forward to the next contest.

same feeling here, I could not have had better words.
congratulations everyone. I love watching those gameplay videos.
What a fun contest this was. Insane amount of great levels, great organization by Dr No and their team, the judges did an incredible and enormous work, and we should never stop thanking them.

I am absolutely blown away from scoring so high with such a silly level, when last year I placed 29th with just a 6 overall, so to anyone disappointed in the scores, keep at it, you will get better results (they don't actually matter).

I'll treasure all the kindness, effort and fun times we all have shared during this competition.

Till next time!
I'm genuinely shocked that I got 30th, gg to everyone who submitted!

I want to thank doge for carrying our level to 2nd place, I wouldn't have made even half of it on my own.
oh and congrats to everyone else etc. :P
Congrats to everyone that submitted, judged, and helped with this contest! This was a massive undertaking to organize, and I'm blown away by all of the feedback from every judge. Hundreds of pages of feedback is the exact reason why I love the SMW community so much <3

Great job to all of the creators as well! There were some really amazing setups and ideas in this year's competition, and I look forward to exploring some of these levels myself now that the grading is out!

And yay, top 20!! :D
that .75 difference from getting top ten hits quite hard.
Still, 11th place is amazing considering the level's overall length and inconsistencies in some parts, things rightfully pointed out by the judges. I will definitely try to not overstay my welcome in future projects, see you in 2022!
I suck at ASM and AMK
Congrats to all who participated. Hope everyone had a stellar time with this!! :D

For me, Kaizo is too difficult, I prefer the standard because I have the last place and I congratulate all those who won

Congratulations to all of the participants, and thank you to the judges for the meticulous effort of playing and scoring the massive pool of entrants!
Gg everyone!
Despite saying it about this year's, I'll definitely join next year's one #wario{:peace:}
