- OVERVIEW -
So...romhacking, am I right?! I've been planning out and making a Super Mario World hack for a few months now, and progress on it has been pretty decent. It's not going to be anything crazy; if you include all of the Switch Palaces and the Top Secret Area, it'll have 48 levels (6 main worlds + a special world). It also won't have much in the way of a story because I don't have any plot ideas and don't want to have to bother people to make things like bosses and new characters (or make a bunch of reskins of Ultimate Noob Boss). I'm basically learning as I go, but I can already tell that I've been getting a lot better at SMW level design since the first level I finished (bottom right screenshot). I'll probably go back and update some of the older levels as the hack gets further along. I've posted a few levels from the hack on my YouTube channel, but there are others I've finished that I haven't fully shown. I'll probably keep this thread updated with clusters of screenshots and eventually some demos as more progress is made.

I'm not great at taking interesting screenshots (I highly prefer videos), but...

Check out my WIP romhack!

In Stuffing Fields it might be worth considering replacing the corner posts that appear for example here, and here with another form of block? You may find it more aethetically pleasing. Otherwise it looks like a good level just a little bare.

Thwomp Dungeon Descent has a very nice palette! Good music choice too. I actually don't have much to say about this one because overall it seems like a pretty cool level that would be fun to play.

Para-Beetles. That's the review.

Thanks for the feedback. The corner pieces you mention were originally cement blocks, but I thought they looked kinda bad so I made them into what you see in the video. Idk how I should address those.
Not really sure if your review of Para Docks is good or bad :V

It's good! I don't know of many levels that center around para beetles that don't pretty much emphasize precise platforming on para beetles.

As of today, my hack is 1/6 complete! Not much else to say aside from the fact that the two levels in the bottom right of my first progress update will probably be either reworked or removed entirely. Either way, things are coming along nicely.

Not as much progress this time, but I'm starting to get a lot of inspiration so hopefully things will start to pick up a bit more soon. The way I build is basically "get inspired -> make like 4 levels at once -> get bored/run out of ideas -> repeat" : P

These look pretty fun, I really like the P-Switch runs in Aqua Tower and the overall pacing on the 2nd autoscroller section in Sunset Smash Castle in particular. Nice work!

Hey, thanks! Kinda thought the second autoscroller could potentially be too fast, but I didn't want to do 2 slow ones in a row : P

I'm now taking name suggestions! See this video for details. Submissions close January 31st.

Loving the screenshots, Jupi. I really appreciate your courage to use different graphic styles throughout the levels. I'm enjoying this balance of consistency and variety.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
The naming contest is over, and I finally have a name! The winner was Nameless Mountain by Y a h a v (it fits way too well. I mean, come on).
See the other name submissions here.

WOW, it's been a while...I got caught up with finishing up college, but I was able to make a few more levels in the past few months. That said, the hack is now over 25% done! When I reach 50%, I'll make an official trailer. Also, the videos of this update's levels aren't actually on YouTube, so consider them exclusive content!!! WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Congratulations on reaching 25% completion!

I have been watching this hack for a while now; your levels look quite fun and this hack, if finished, appears to be one that would stand out from some of the more "standard" hacks released.

As for the two levels you showed off, they both seem pretty good. Nightcrawler Fortress was particularly well-designed and creative; you tend to do a pretty great job when it comes to autoscrollers and keeping the player engaged. As for Steel Jelly, that level looks fun. I was surprised by the first Gusty in the video; they move pretty fast.

My best wishes for further work on this hack.
This is somewhat unrelated but I really like how you write up your design process and the resources used in the description of your level previews.

Thanks. And yep, even though everything on SMWC is technically free to use, I think it's important to credit people for stuff because otherwise, people who don't really know how SMW hacking works will think the creator of the hack made EVERYTHING in that hack, including all of the resources used (see: Mario's Mystery Meat). I actually have a spreadsheet of all the resources I've used that I'm planning on releasing along with the hack, just so everyone gets credited and people don't constantly ask where stuff's from : P

Not much to say this time around, other than the fact that the hack is now 1/3 done! As I said, I'll probably make a trailer for it once around half of the stages are done. It's coming together quite nicely.
I also removed a few screenshots from the thread's other posts, mostly of levels that are either being scrapped or completely reworked to the point where they don't resemble the screenshots at all. No point in keeping those old images around.

For real though, first time I've seen this thread and it looks pretty fun and cute! I gotta try this out when it's available. #smrpg{<3}

SURPRISE! I'M NOT DEAD!!!
Long story short, I got caught up in grad school and other projects and this hack got put on the backburner for a while. Thankfully, though, I got hit with some inspiration and am now making some more progress! That said, two things that I want to acknowledge:
1. The level "HIGH VOLTAGE" was actually my entry for Talkhaus's MaGL4 contest, but it'll still be used in the hack.
2. These two levels are the last ones that I'll be publicly showing in full, at least for the foreseeable future. Don't want to show off too much of the hack, after all :P

First update of 2022! I've got a few things to cover here. First of all, this hack now has its own logo courtesy of Snessy The Duck!

Additionally, anyone that saw my hack's C3 thread or is subscribed to my YouTube channel knows that this hack's official trailer has now been released (featuring never before seen levels)! You can watch it here:

On top of that, I showed an unreleased video of a level that is going to be scrapped in the full hack (the aesthetics will be similar, but the level design will be completely different):

That's it for now. No new screenshots because I really don't feel like grabbing more of them, but I can assure you that the hack's progress is coming along quite nicely.
